This study aimed to investigate the perception and preferences related to Korean food according to the ethnicity of university students in Yanbian, China. Korean food was preferred by Korean-Chinese as compared with Chinese students, and Korean-Chinese students preferred Korean food more than Chinese food. Both Korean-Chinese and Chinese preferred Korean food more than traditional Chosun food. More Korean-Chinese than Chinese students had positive perceptions of Korean food, which included foods made with jang, kimchi smell, and healthiness due to diversity. For evaluation of Korean food taste, more Chinese than Korean-Chinese subjects thought Korean food is not greasy and hoped salty taste. Both awareness and preferences related to Korean food were significantly higher in Korean-Chinese than Chinese students. Meat foods (so-galbi, dak-galbi, jang-jorim) were relatively high in terms of preference in both Korean-Chinese and Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students preferred Korean traditional foods (sujeonggwa, yakgwa, gangjeong). In Korean-Chinese students, Korean representative traditional foods (kimchi, jangajji) and Korean traditional holiday foods (tteokguk, mandu-guk) were relatively low in terms of preference. This study found that the traditional food culture of Korean-Chinese has been maintained in Yanbian, whereas there is a change in the young generation.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of drinking motives on binge drinking and the difference between male and female students. Methods: A survey was conducted for 500 college students in three towns in Gang-won Province. Frequency analysis was used for demographic item and group regression analysis for effects of drinking motives on binge drinking. Results: Sub-factor-uplift motives, social motives, coping motives and tuning motives were analyzed. It was found that uplift motives, social motives and coping motives influenced binge drinking significantly(p<0.001). But tuning motives had no significant effect. Also for male students, uplift motives affected binge drinking significantly(p<0.001) whereas female students were not affected by it. In contrast, social motives had an influence on binge drinking significantly (0<0.001) for female students while it didn't affect male students. Coping motives affected both male and female students on binge drinking by p<0.001. Conclusions: College students' drinking motives had a significant influence on binge drinking, and since it is reported that there is difference between male and female student group, a guideline and education for drinking regarding gender difference is needed for the establishment of desirable drinking culture for college students.
The purpose of this study was to survey the perception and preference for Korean food among Chinese students residing in Korea (Chinese foreign students, N=69) and China (Chinese-locals, N=98). A total of 76.8% of Chinese foreign students and 70.4% of Chinese-locals had ever eaten Korean food in China before visiting Korea, and motivation to try Korean food at first was 'easy access to Korean food restaurants' (Chinese foreign students 38.6%, Chinese-locals 44.9%). The most important factors in selecting Korean food were 'taste' and 'price' (Chinese foreign students 72.7% and 18.2%, Chinese-locals 59.1% and 22.7%, respectively), and needed improvements for Korean food were 'spicy and salty taste' and 'nutritional aspect' (Chinese foreign students 54.5% and 25.8%, Chinese-locals 33.3% and 36.4%, p<0.05). The scores for perception of Korean food were significantly lower in Chinese-locals (2.99) than in Chinese foreign students (3.31)(p<0.001). Chinese foreign students preferred Bulgogi (20.5%), Neobiani (20.1%), and Galbijjim (17.9%), whereas Chinese-locals preferred Bulgogi (16.1%), Gimbap (16.1%), and Samgyetang (15.2%) (p<0.001). The most preferred condiment was 'Garlic' (18.0%) in Chinese foreign students, and 'Red pepper powder' (16.4%) in Chinese-locals. The results of the study can be used as a foundation to prepare a globalization strategy for Korean Food.
This study was performed in order to investigate to dietary behavior, perceived stress level and their correlations for University students. Dietry behavior of 72% subjects was poor and only 1.8% was good. The dietary behavior of subjects was correlated with their residence type. The overage stress point was $1.76{\pm}0.53$ and female students was more stressed than male. Stress elevate the food uptakes and digestion disorder in female students. 12 Factors of stress was analyzed in University students, identification, study, friends and off-school activity related factors were more influenced in female students and health related factor was dominant in male. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional status of school lunch supported students and to provide fundamental data for improving their health. In order to do that, we collected the data for 59 school lunch supported students and 71 not supported students in an elementary school in the Taegu Metropolitan city area. The survey was conducted from February 10 to April 30, 2000. The results are as follows; In relation to their body composition(BMI, Fatmass, Percent Body Fat, Mid-upper Arm Muscle Circumference, Mid-upper Arm Circumference), the school lunch supported students' value was lower than that of the not supported students. In relation to food intake according to the food groups, the school lunch supported students' intake of animal food(p<0.05) and total food(p<0.01)was significantly lower than that of the other students. The average intake of energy for both school lunch supported students and not supported students was below the RDA. Also, it was significantly lower than that of the school lunch supported students in relation to the other students(p<0.05). For protein, calcium, phosphorous, and riboflavin, the school lunch supported students' intake was significantly lower than that of the students who were not supported(p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05). There are the classification in relation to the nutrient intake in relation to the RDA standards for that of the school lunch supported students. The criteria used for this study was calorie intake, protein, and niacin. The classifications are for groups below 75%, between 75%~100%, and 100%. The nutrients for which the students were deficient( below 75%) of the RDA were iron, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin C, thiamin, calorie, niacin, vitamin A, protein, and phosphorous in the above order.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a targeted, practical education intervention on university students' knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding. Methods: A university curricular intervention was designed for students to increase their knowledge and positive attitude toward breastfeeding issues. The participants attended a breastfeeding education lectures two hours of weekly for fifteen weeks in university; 61 students (female, n=31 and male, n=30) participated. The pre- and post-measurements included future breastfeeding intention, knowledge, attitude and perceived control beliefs scores based on the results of a questionnaire. Results: The statistical analysis results revealed a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores (0.57 to 5.10 points, p<0.001) in regard to the students' breastfeeding knowledge. For female students, significant differences were observed in the future breastfeeding intention (p<0.05), knowledge (p<0.001), and attitudes towards breastfeeding (p<0.05) between the pretest and posttest scores. For male students, there were no significant differences in the future breastfeeding intention, attitudes towards breastfeeding, and perceived control beliefs scores after the breastfeeding education lecture. Conclusions: This study showed that the implementation of practical breastfeeding educational interventions helped improve university students' knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding. In summary, despite the limitations, it is necessary to pay more attention to improving students' knowledge and attitudes towards breastfeeding through university curricula.
Purpose: This study examined the status of sexual knowledge, contraception knowledge and sexual attitude of nursing students and analyzed the factors affecting the differences, relationships and variables among the three variables according to the general characteristics provided basic data for planning practice of sex education and counseling programs for nursing students. Methods: To measure the sexual knowledge, contraception knowledge and sexual attitude of nursing university students, questions were organized using the questionnaires of kim1), Heo2) and Ho2). The study subjects were university students, the collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 program. Results: The results obtained from this study are as follows. the sex knowledge of nursing college students was 77.5 and contraceptives 62.5. the higher sex knowledge they have and the more open sex attitude they have, the higher sex and contraception knowledge they have. the relationship between sex knowledge, contraception knowledge and sex attitude of nursing university students has been found to be correlated. Conclusion: The significance of this study is that it provided basic necessary data for planning practice of sex education and counseling programs for nursing university students by investigating the status of sexual knowledge, contraception and sexual attitude among nursing university students.
This study was intended to develop food and nutrition cyberclass contents for nonmajor students at university. We investigated universities which offered food and nutrition related courses in 1998 by a telephone survey in order to select the most appropriate lecture contents for the nonmajor university students. We investigated to select the most needed lecture contents for the students, 15 questions on evaluation of cyberclasses which they took. The number of subjects were 140 students of ‘C’university who registered for nonmajor food and nutrition course in 1998. Among 140 students, 80 were cyberclass students and 60 were non cyberclass students. The results of the survey were as following : Fifty-five universities out of 62 had curriculums on food and nutrition in 1998 and 36,802 students attended the non major food and nutrition lectures. 84.9% of the respondents had their own computes and the main application mostly used was word processing. Additionally, 33.3% of them used on-line communications and 81.4% of them used internet. The most interesting subject of the respondents was ‘disease and nutrition management’. The male respondents were concerned more about ‘alcohol and health’, whereas the females were concerned about ‘obesity and weight control’.
The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective opinions related to of smoking behavior of university students with a history of smoking. The research period was from Feb, 1. 1996 to Sep. 10. 1997. The research method used was Q-methodology. The process of the research was as follows : 1. Collection of concourse : The statement of self-reference was derived from face to face interviews with 50 university students. Statement were categorized by researcher according to semantics. 2. Extraction of Q-sample : 38 of the self-reference statements from the 32 categories of the Q-population were selected. 3. Selection of P-sample : 30 of university students were selected by consideration of diversity in sociodemographic background. 4. Based on a 1 to 9 point scale, the selected university students were made to participate in Q-sorting. 5. Analysis of Q-type was obtained by use of the QUANAL program. The results of this study revealed as follows : There are three types of smoking behavior of Korean university students. 1. The first type focused on the right of the individual to smoke and the lack of recognition of smoking behavior as a health hazard. 2. The second type cared about smoking behavior as a hazard to health. 3. The third type was habitual smoker. They are bored and smoke habitually. It is suggested that the results of this study may contribute to the development of strategies for the purpose of decreasing the incidence of smoking of university students.
This study examined the physical activity and dietary patterns of university students in Nairobi County and compared to their weight status. The study was a cross-sectional analytical design with a sample of 260 undergraduate students randomly selected from two private and two public universities. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to gather information from students. Students weight and height measurements were also obtained. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22. The study results showed that 53.5% of the students met the recommended levels of moderate physical activity and 18.8% of the students met the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity. Majority of the students consumed fast foods sweetened beverages and pastries most times in a week. The study also showed that 31.2% of the students were overweight and 6.2% were obese. The study reveals that most students did not achieve the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity and showed some poor dietary patterns. Findings show clear evidence of high prevalence of overweight among university students but focus should be on fitness rather than fatness. Efforts should be made to promote physical activity participation and good dietary practices within university environments.
