This paper examines and presents descriptions of 12 prospective primary teachers' views on the nature of mathematics in USA. All the participants were elementary teacher candidates enrolled in the same mathematics method courses. Interview data show that the prospective primary teachers possess two kinds of views on the nature of mathematics: primarily traditional and even mix of traditional and nontraditional beliefs in terms of Raymond's (1997) belief criteria. Implications for teacher education were discussed at the end of the paper.

In this study, it was analyzed first the views of nature of elementary and middle school students using the analysis framework of the views of nature that reflects the results of the literature analysis on the traditional views of nature that Koreans traditionally have. Next, it was analyzed characteristics of the views of nature which elementary and secondary school teachers. Finally, it was discussed the implications of the results of analysis of students' and teachers' views on science education in elementary and secondary schools. For this purpose, the framework for analysis the views of nature was reconstructed by combining the characteristics of Korean's traditional views of nature (Lee & Son, 2017) with the framework developed by Cobern and his colleagues (Cobern, Gibson, & Underwood, 1995). And in order to analyze in depth how students and teachers perceive nature, each question was asked to write a reason why they thought about their responses. According to the study, students and teachers respected nature and viewed it as a living creature, and had the view that nature was cyclical and that humans and nature interacted with each other. And they also had a traditional Korean view of nature that they consider naturalness important and nature is beautiful. It can be said that this is different from the view of Western modern science which perceives the world as a material and see nature with the view of linear time. Therefore, Korea's traditional views of natures, which students and teachers have, can be a conflict with the view of modern science in science class. Therefore, the science teaching strategy for students and teachers with different natural views will require consideration of the individual's understanding of nature and lesson strategies related to it. And it is also necessary that science textbook and science class cultures need to actively interact with teachers and students, and between students to share and understand each other's view of nature, and create a science class culture that considers the values students have and views on nature.
The importance of teaching the nature of science (NOS) has been always emphasized in science education. However, the NOS is hardly taught in elementary science class. We are lacking in the strategies and materials for teaching NOS. So we designed the science drama teaching, and investigated the effects on pupils' perceptions about NOS. The subjects of this study were 185 third graders from a elementary school. The treatment group was provided with science drama lessons and the control group was provided with traditional lecture-type lessons. Their perceptions about NOS were investigated before/after the science lessons and after 3 months following them, and both of two groups were compared. The pretest results revealed that the pupils of both groups were found to have similar views on NOS. Dey had traditional views of the most items except for social construction of theories, mathematical knowledge and decision-making. After science lessons, they tended to change their views toward modem views, but the pupils of the treatment group showed more modem views than those of the control group on the observation, model, social construction of theories, predictions. After 3 months, the pupils of the control group tended to come back to their traditional views, but those of the treatment group showed tendencies that their changed views were kept up on the observation, scientific model, scientific knowledge, scientific methods, decision-making, social construction of theories, mathematical knowledge. Therefore this study suggests that science drama teaching could be one of the effective ways for teaching NOS.
In order to preserve the traditional garden landscape and maintain the harmony between traditional and modern gardens of Inner Mongolia, this study theoretically examined the creation and background elements of Inner Mongolia, and reviewed the nature of the people and the traditional design elements. The results of this study show that: 1) the background factor of traditional garden landscapes was nomadic life in plains, which was a lifestyle of adapting to Mother Nature and promoting mutual existence and survival; 2) Shamanism impacted the views of nature among the ancient Inner Mongolian people; 3) traditional garden landscapes could be categorized into landscapes centered around Mother Nature during the Huns era and those centered around the symbolic landscape during the Genghis Khan era; 4) aesthetic elements of traditional garden landscapes included traditional colors of red, yellow, sky-blue, milky-white, and traditional patterns of external knot, cloud, bull horn, and plain grass. These findings may provide basic data for the creation background and characteristics of traditional garden landscape of Inner Mongolia in the application of the green space design of Inner Mongolia.
This paper reviewed the concept of the environ ment in Korean traditional thought according to Shamamism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. The differences in the views of the environment between Korean traditional thought and Western thought were compared according to the ontological point of view. This study attempted to investigate the concept of environment, one of the four metaparadigm(human, environment, health, nursing)as it is experssed in Korean traditional thought. However, it was difficult to find the concept of environment separated out in the traditional thought pattern. Instead, environment concepts are represented in the natural views and universal views. Even though the four traditional thought patterns (Shamaism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism) represent some difference in their view of nature, the combination of natural and human harmony, anti-dichotomy and so forth are emphasized in common in four thought patterns. Korean traditional thought includes a more comprehensive meaning than the unitary-transformative perspective discussed in modern Westen thought patterns. Environment has been dealt with in narrow view until now. Now we avoid this narrow view and must regard environment as an integrated concept with person. Through this research, it is hoped that a contribution will be made to the development of nursing knowledge suitable to Korean culture.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the kind of traditional perspectives we can use from the past to create a sustainable society for the future and to contribute to the growing interest in, and concern for, environmentally-sound designs. Such perspectives include ways to sustain naturalistic aesthetic views, elements of architectural design, and ideas for traditional lifestyles. Architecture that used these methods would contribute to a more ecologically sensitive view of man's place within the natural environment. This research was conducted by way of literature reviews; the objects of study were physically extant traditional housing, the composition of the traditional village, and traditional lifestyles. The results of this study indicate that the ecological characteristics of traditional Korean homes originated from a holistic conception of society and nature; this holistic conception has been found lacking in our more modern, western influenced homes. In the past, in order to leave an unpolluted or even healthier natural environment to descendents, it was essential to apply ecological principles. Villages harmonized with nature and houses were designed to utilize sunlight and wind. Their natural construction promoted consciousness of human beings and their symbiotic relationship with nature.
Ecosystem and environment have been a serious challenge facing the modern society. It's been the new paradigm from ecological view of the world and the alternative based on Orientalism. From the Oriental standpoint, ecological aesthetics and sustainable architecture are no longer new, which then servers the background of this study. The nature and the space, the life where the human is harmonized and integrated and the wish to make the balance through that life are the basic philosophy which the Orientalism has pursued. Based on such a basic concept, the study is intended to review the connectivity, expression approach and the features in Korean traditional residential space based on previous studies on ecological aesthetics and sustainable architecture. Such attempt is meaningful in seeking the possibility of presenting the new frame as well as forming the various views to the traditional space and spatial recognition. The nature was categorized into tangible element and intangible element and also direct approach and indirect approach before evaluating the characteristics. Sustainable architecture is not the concept to simply maintain or sustain the environment, but plays more important role in economical aspect. Traditional space accommodates the nature and circulation principle and the circulation in the nature controls the energy and enhances the efficiency, playing significant role. The nature itself serves the alternative energy and has the aesthetic element in such a way of concealing itself. This study is intended to analyze the Byulseo Jeongwon which formed many relations with the nature and the residential space, thereby identifying the expression characteristics of eco-aesthetic sustainable architect. This study offers the answers with regard to the coexistence of the expression characteristics of sustainable architecture with the nature, space and the human from eco aesthetic viewpoint as well as the solution in dealing with the ecological and environmental challenges. Furthermore, it suggested the possibility that the traditional space would possibly be succeedable in new and creative way and sought the way for coexistence among the nature, space and human and eco aesthetics, and finally paved the pivotal foundation as the sustainable design alternative in future.
Natural Medicine is a medical system that tries to find the cause and cure of the disease in the nature emphasizing on natural healing power of human body. The most important value of traditional medicine in east Asia lies on the fact that this medicine is a medical culture and natural medicine that was selected by instinct and human nature reflecting the best possible remedy by the wisdom of evolution, and views the living phenomenon based on relation and circulation. This medicine is a natural medicine that tries to recover and promote the natural healing power by vitality and is a system that cumulates various empirical information about unique and complicated life phenomenon as a legacy of evolution in the body and the disease. The understanding of variation and adaptation of human species should be based on thorough knowledge of origin, instinct and nature of human as well as knowledge of survival and adaptation of human and environment based on evolution. And through this insight, the prevention and treatment of modern diseases should be developed. In this regards, traditional medicine in east Asia should be highlighted again as a study on adaptation and harmony of penetrating the cultural history of mind which has led the history of biological body and change of society and culture, and the repository of practical wisdom and knowledge.
We investigated people's patterns of reasoning regarding the Korean traditional interpretation of Planet Occultation by the Moon. A questionnaire survey was administered to the sample which consisted of 632 participants: middle school students(n=164), high school students(n=157), university students(n=172), and the public(n=139). It was revealed that 15.7% of the participants agreed, 38.1% disagreed, and 46.2% were neutral to the traditional interpretation. A comparatively large portion of the university students made a scientifically correct judgement by disagreeing with the traditional interpretation. On the other hand, a relatively small proportion of the middle school students disagreed. Participants' views of nature and views of science were the major reasons for making their judgements. Most participants were fixed with similar views to the Korean traditional view of nature. Most of the participants valued using more extensive evidence and experimental proofs in science. High school and university students considered their metaphysical beliefs, such as view of nature and view of science, more important than other groups did. In contrast to this, middle school students and the public depended more strongly on their personal experiences. Participants' social experiences and their scientific knowledge were also important reasons for making their judgement. However the differences in their scientific knowledge seemed to exert different influences on their reasoning. The results of this study show differences in how an individual thinks as well as differences between communities. Thus, science education and research considering multicultural settings are needed. In addition, science educators and researchers should pay attention to pupils' metaphysical beliefs such as their views of nature and views of science.

The purpose of this study was to examine Korean preservice science teachers' understanding of the nature of science (NOS). Thirty-one Korean preservice teachers were given an open-ended questionnaire about their understanding of NOS. The Korean preservice teachers' responses were categorized according to pattern and theme. These findings will provide information to aid in the development of curriculum and instruction to improve preservice teachers' understanding of NOS. Compared to in previous studies, Korean preservice teachers demonstrated various philosophical stances that have been suggested by philosophers of science. In addition, they were more likely to connect science to human endeavors and social needs. These results were interpreted in relation to the influence of the science methods course, secondary science curriculum, and the traditional cultural view.
