A study on the relationship of hub ports' transshipment and trade in East Asia: Focusing on Korean ports

  • This paper is a study of the relationships between trade and transshipment in Korea. Through the analysis of the data collected, a comprehensive model has been developed to analyze and predict relationships between trade and transshipment. By using analyses of port and trade evolution in Asia, the model identifies some important results. An application of the model to forecast developments in selected regions in China is also included in this paper. The paper provides a basis for shipping companies to decide on appropriate transshipment port strategies, and provides important theoretical references for Korean ports' development Supported by Shanghai leading Academic Discipline Project, project Number: T0602.

우리나라 중소 무역항의 성장 패턴과 유형별 시사점 (The Spatial Growth Pattern of Korean Small-Medium Size Port and its Implications)

  • 국가 경제에서 대외무역이 차지하는 중요성이 큰 까닭에 우리나라는 협소한 국토 규모에 비해 무역항으로 지정된 항만의 수가 많다. 그러나 일부 중소 무역항들은 저조한 이용실적으로 인해 SOC 중복 투자에 따른 재정 낭비에 대한 비판이 제기되는데, 이는 지역별로 무역항의 대외교역 특성과 비교우위가 세밀하게 분석되지 못한 상황에서 건설 운영되었기 때문으로 판단된다. 이에 본 연구는 시계열 군집분석 기법을 활용하여 국내 중소 무역항 19개를 대상으로 과거 20년 동안의 교역 규모, 취급화물 품목 수, 교역 대상국 수 증감 등의 변화 패턴과 유형을 분석하였다. 분석결과 우리나라 중소 무역항은 분석 지표에 따라 모두 5가지의 성장 패턴 유형으로 구분되었고 유형별 특성과 시사점도 도출할 수 있었다. 대외 무역환경이 급격하게 변화하고 지역간 균형있는 발전의 중요성이 강조되는 오늘날 중소 무역항의 성장 유형과 특성을 탐색하는 연구는 매우 중요하며, 금번 연구 결과는 향후 지역차원의 항만 개발 및 운영에 유의미한 시사점을 제공할 것으로 기대된다.

북중국 주요항만과 서해안 항만간의 교역 컨테이너 유통경로 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Analysis of Container Distribution channel between Korean Western Ports & Chinese North Ports)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 한중간의 교역규모 증대에 따른 우리나라 서해안 항만과 북중국 항만들과의 컨테이너 유통경로를 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한중간의 지리적인 근접성에 따른 지리적인 이점과 그에 따른 물류비용의 절감효과에 기인하여 우리나라 중부이북지역의 컨테이너 화물들은 서해안 항만들을 경유하여 북중국으로 유통되고 있는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 이러한 교역물량 증가속도가 매우 빠른 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 현상은 과거 국내 컨테이너 유통경로의 중심지였던 부산항에 집중된 물류구조를 분산화 시키는 효과를 나타내고 있다. 반면, 서해안 항만들은 동일한 배후경제지역의 화물처리 및 대 중국 교역집중도에 따른 경쟁가능성이 높은 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 서해안 항만들의 개발정책에는 항만고유 특성에 부합한 발전 가능성을 중시해야 하며 또한 서해안 항만들의 한중항로의 편향성을 탈피한 대안의 모색이 필요하다. 아울러 한중항로개방에 대비한 해운정책의 추진방안도 강구되어야 할 것이다.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze traffic volume between the Korean container ports located at the west coast and northern Chinese ports and then the distribution trend of container between Korea and China. The findings of the study are as follows. First, Container traffic between western Korean ports and northern Chinese ports has been increasing due to an increasing trade volume between both countries and geographical accessibility. Second, Seoul and neighboring area tend to use the trade route between the western ports and northern Chinese because of lower logistics costs and time-saved advantage compared to another ports. Third, the growth of the western ports did depend mainly on the northern China oriented growth. Such a fact could leads to the overlapping investment in port development in Korea and another intense competition among national ports to attract cargoes and liners. Therefore, port development policy considering the characteristics and function of national ports have to be established. and also alternatives and strategies for improving the competitive edge of small and medium sized shipping lines against the opening of shipping market have to be worked out.

퍼지 클러스터링에 의한 항만의 분류 (Classification of Foreign Trade Ports using Fuzzy Clustering)

  • Grouping ports in certain region by their characteristics could be used as the principal informations to establish national policy for port development or investment and also to analyze the competitiveness between ports. Currently Korean ports are divided into two groups such as the local port and the designated port containing foreign trade port and coastal port under the Korean port law. These divisions seem to be used for port administration as the matter of convenience but some qualitative grouping is needed for research of port problems. In this paper, 28 major Korean ports were clustered by the similar characteristics using Fuzzy C-Means and found to be classified 8 qualitative groups.

Grouping ports in certain region by their characteristics could be used as the principal informations to establish national policy for port development or investment and also to analyze the competitiveness between ports. Currently Korean ports are divided into two groups such as the local port and the designated port containing foreign trade port and coastal port under the Korean port law. These divisions seem to be used for port administration as the matter of convenience but some qualitative grouping is needed for research of port problems. In this paper, 20 major Korean ports were clustered by the similar characteristics using Fuzzy C-Means and found to be classified 8 qualitative groups.

한·중·일 항만효율성 비교연구 (A Comparative Study of the Efficiency among Korea, Chinese, and Japanese Ports)

  • 본 연구를 통해 동북아시아 지역 주요항만의 효율성을 분석해보고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 선석 수, 선석 길이, 수심, 부두 총면적, 크레인수를 투입변수로, 컨테이너 처리량을 산출변수로 DEA(자료포괄분석) 모형을 이용하여 상대적 효율성 측정을 시도하였다. 대상항만은 한국, 중국, 일본의 주요항만 27개 항만으로 하였으며, 분석 결과 2009년 기준 DEA-CCR 모형에서는 효율적인 항만이 7개 항만으로 모두 중국의 항만으로 나타났으며, DEA-BCC 모형에서는 효율적인 항만이 9개 항만으로 중국 항만 8개, 한국 항만 1개로 나타났다. 전체적으로 모든 모형에서 중국의 항만들이 한국과 일본의 항만에 비해 상대적으로 효율성이 높게 평가되었다. 비효율적으로 분석된 대부분의 항만들은 규모의 효율성 값이 1에 가까운 값을 보여 비효율성의 원인이 기술적인 측면에서 발생하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 중국항만에 비해 한국과 일본의 항만들은 투입과다분이 다량 발생하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • The maritime logistics environment including seaborne trade, shipping and ports is changing rapidly and continuously. Large containerships, mega carriers and global terminal operators try to achieve economies of scale and economies of scope. As a result of the changing environment, the competition between ports to achieve competitiveness is intensive. Port competition among China, Japan and Korea is becoming fiercer, both directly and indirectly, resulting from the increased trade in northeast Asia. Port development projects within each country stimulate more intensive port competition. As a result, overcapacity, fierce price competition and overlapping hinterland problems will be caused in the future. Co-operation for survival is considered as a strategy in order to solve anticipated problems caused by port competition Busan port, for instance, could co-operate with China and Japan as well as with other ports in Korea Terminal operators' expansion through investments including joint-ventures will make connections between ports smoother. At the port authority level, continuous cooperative interchange between countries is indispensable.
