  • This study introduces a new type of symbolic data, a candle chart-valued time series. We aggregate four stock indices (i.e., open, close, highest and lowest) as a one data point to summarize a huge amount of data. In other words, we consider a candle chart, which is constructed by open, close, highest and lowest stock indices, as a type of symbolic data for a long period. The proposed candle chart-valued time series effectively summarize and visualize a huge data set of stock indices to easily understand a change in stock indices. We also propose novel approaches for the candle chart-valued time series modeling based on a combination of two midpoints and two half ranges between the highest and the lowest indices, and between the open and the close indices. Furthermore, we propose three types of sum of square for estimation of the candle chart valued-time series model. The proposed methods take into account of information from not only ordinary data, but also from interval of object, and thus can effectively perform for time series modeling (e.g., forecasting future stock index). To evaluate the proposed methods, we describe real data analysis consisting of the stock market indices of five major Asian countries'. We can see thorough the results that the proposed approaches outperform for forecasting future stock indices compared with classical data analysis.

  • This paper deals with the relationship between money supply and the stock market. However, unlike past works, it has employed a rational expectation hypothesis and an efficient market hypothesis drawn from new classical macroeconomics and new Keynesian macro-economics, respectively. Accordingly, hypothesis 1 states that if economic subjects have rational expectation, they will immediately respond to a change in money supply. On the other hand, hypothesis 2 supposes that the expectation of economic subjects has changed after the currency crisis. This paper has first identified unit root by using the augmented Dickey-Fuller test and the Phillips-Perron test, then testing both hypotheses by employing the Johansen Procedure and vector error correction model for the periods before and after a currency crisis.

  • Purpose - This paper explores whether overnight returns measured from the last closing price to today's opening price explain the cross-section of stock returns. Design/methodology/approach - This study is conducted using the Korean stock market data from 1998 to 2018, obtained from DataGuide database. The analysis begins with portfolio-level tests, followed by firm-level cross-sectional regressions. Findings - First, when decile portfolios sorted on the daily average of overnight returns in the previous months, the highest decile portfolio exhibits a significant negative risk-adjusted return. This suggests that stocks with higher average overnight returns are temporarily overvalued due to buying pressure from investors. Second, at least 6 months of persistence exists in average overnight returns, which is in line with the results reported by Barber, Odean and Zhu (2009) that investor sentiment persists over several weeks. Finally, Fama-MacBeth cross-sectional regression of expected returns after controlling for a variety of firm characteristic variables such as firm size, book-to-market ratio, market beta, momentum, liquidity, short-term reversal, the slope coefficient for overnight returns remains negative and statistically significant. Research implications or Originality - Overall, the evidence consistently suggests that overnight return is considered as a new priced factor in the cross-section of expected returns. The findings of this paper not only adds to finance literature, but also could be useful to practitioners in making stock investment decision.

  • Purpose - This paper examines whether overnight returns and idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) jointly affects the cross-section of expected stock returns in the Korean stock market. Design/methodology/approach - Constructing 5×5 bivariate monthly portfolios independently sorted on overnight returns and IVOL, this paper tests whether overpricing of stocks with high overnight returns is more pronounced for the stocks that also have high IVOL. In addition, we also investigate whether time-variation in the degree of overpricing for those stocks can be explained by market volatility. Findings - Our results show that stocks having both high overnight returns and high IVOL exhibit strong negative returns in the future. In contrast, we are unable to observe such negative returns for the stocks that have high overnight returns and low IVOL. This suggests that overpricing of stocks with high overnight returns is concentrated for the stocks having high IVOL. Moreover, we also find that the degree to which such stocks are overpriced is negatively related to market volatility. Research implications or Originality - his paper is the first attempt to explore whether degree of overpricing of stocks having high overnight returns is related to IVOL. We also discover time-varying property of overpricing is jointly driven by overnight returns and IVOL. Our results indicate that IVOL might help explain other previously documented stock return anomalies, suggesting interesting topics for future research.

  • This paper empirically investigates the impact of winning a quality award by investigating the rate of return of a firm's stock in the stock market, and by analyzing the contribution and effectiveness to a firm's competitiveness. It also compares the effect of firms winning MB(Malcolm Baldrige) award with that of firms winning Korean quality awards on the stock market. A comparative method is used to analyze the change of award-winning firms'rate of return and then they are classified by time-series, cross-sectional, firm's size, award agency, and the year of receiving the award. The number of firms employed in this study is 74, however, multiple award-winning firms are included in the analysis, which increased the sample size to 118. Results indicate that Korean quality awards improve an award-winning firms'market value but not as much as the MB award did.

  • This paper investigated performance of the Markowitz's portfolio selection model with applications to Korean stock market. We chose Samsung-Group-Funds and KOSPI index for performance comparison with the Markowitz's portfolio selection model. For the most recent one and a half year period between March 2007 and September 2008, KOSPI index almost remained the same with only 0.1% change, Samsung-Group-Funds showed 20.54% return, and Markowitz's model, which is composed of the same 17 Samsung group stocks, achieved 52% return. We performed sensitivity analysis on the duration of financial data and the frequency of portfolio change in order to maximize the return of portfolio. In conclusion, according to our empirical research results with Samsung-Group-Funds, investment by Markowitz's model, which periodically changes portfolio by using nonlinear programming with only financial data, outperformed investment by the fund managers who possess rich experiences on stock trading and actively change portfolio by the minute-by-minute market news and business information.

  • We study the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) of Asian four countries such as Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and China on housing market returns in Korea. Also, we document the relationship between the EPU index of those four countries and the housing market including macroeconomic indicators in Korea. The EPU index of those four countries has significantly a negative effect on the housing purchase price index, housing lease price index in Korea. The EPU index in Korea and Japan has significantly a negative effect on the CPI. The EPU index in only Japan has significantly a negative effect on the PPI. The EPU index in Hong Kong and Korea has significantly a negative effect but the EPU index in China significantly has a positive effect on the stock price index in construction industry. The EPU index in only Korea has significantly a negative effect the stock price index in banking industry. This study shows the EPU index of the Korea has the negative relationships on the housing market economy rather than other countries by VECM. And this study has an important evidence of the spillover of several macroeconomic indicators in Korea for the EPU index of the Asian four countries.

  • It is known that the domestic and the U.S. stock prices tend to move together as those markets are closely interrelated. In this study, cointegration and causal relationships among the four stock price indexes of KOSPI, KOSDAQ, DOWJONES and NASDAQ are carefully investigated for the period of declining stock prices in the long run. When all indexes move in a similar fashion, cointegration does not exist and the causal linkages between the domestic and the U.S. stock prices appear relatively complex. On the other hand, when the domestic and the V.S. stock prices move in a different manner, cointegration exists and the causal relationships appear relatively simple. NASDAQ is apparently found to lead the domestic stock market in both periods, which is consistent with the actual market situation when the If industry is under recession.

  • Parrondo paradox is a counter-intuitive phenomenon where two losing games can be combined to win or two winning games can be combined to lose. When we trade stocks with a history-dependent Parrondo game rule (where we buy and sell stocks based on recent investment outcomes) we found Parrondo paradox in stock trading. Using stock data of the KRX from 2008 to 2010, we analyzed the Parrondo paradoxical cases in the Korean stock market.
