  • Applying livestock manure compost to soil can enhance soil fertility and crop productivity. However, little information is available on the effect of continuous application of manure compost on crop growth in Korea. The object of this study was to investigate the residual and continuous application effect of chicken manure compost on chinese cabbage yield and soil chemical properties. The experiment was conducted in the pot ($0.5\;m^2$) without bottom buried in the soil and set up in a completely randomized design with three replication. The treatment consists of chemical fertilizer with nitrogen (NPK, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O$ 320-78-198 kg/ha) and without nitrogen (PK, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O$ 0-78-198 kg/ha), and chicken manure compost at a rate corresponding to 320 (COM1) and 640 (COM2) kg N/ha. This experiment was carried out for three cropping seasons with chinese cabbage. Chemical fertilizer, NPK and PK, was applied every cropping season. In the first cropping season, compost was applied in nine pots (COM-A). In the second cropping season, compost was applied in the six pots of COM-A (COM-AA) and in three pots of COM-A compost was not applied (COM-AN). In next cropping season, compost was applied in the three pots of COM-AA (COM-AAA) and in the other three pots of COM-AA compost was not applied (COM-AAN). COM-AN pots remained without compost application in the third cropping season (COM-ANN). Yields of chinese cabbage of COM1-AAA and COM2-AAA were reached 78 and 96% as compared with NPK, and nitrogen utilization rate was about 85% (COM1-AAA) and 97% (COM2-AAA) as compared with NPK Residual N uptake rates during the second and third cropping season after compost application at the first cropping season were 49.7 (COM1-AN) and 35.6% (COM1-ANN) in COM1, and 56.9 (COM2-AN) and 37.4% (COM2-ANN) in COM2 compared with NPK treatment After three cropping seasons, soil pH and contents of available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium and soil organic matter were increased with continuous application of chicken manure compost.

  • The present paper is a part of a study aimed at gaining information on the origin, mode of deposition, and characteristics of volcanic soils in Jeju. Volcanic activity of Jeju island has extremely influenced on the formation of various soils. Polysequum phenomenon of soils is one of outstanding soil genesis in Jeju. The typical polysequum soils was collected and analyzed by morphological, physico-chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological approaches The results are as follows: 1. The soils consists of polysequa, A and B horizons from volcanic ashes, unconsolidated volcanic sand layer and B(I) horizons from residual basalts. 2. The lithological discontinuity is also very distinct; silt loam from volcanic ashes, sand (II) from volcanic sand and clayey (III) from basalts. 3. Volcanic sand layer seems to be influenced by lava flow. The properties of it are similar to volcanic ashes rather than beneath residuum in micromorphological aspects. In micromorphological, this layer is gradually changed into soils. 4. Dominant clay minerals are allophane in A and B horizons from volcanic ashes and kaoline, vermiculite and illite from residual basalts. 5. The soils are not developed. There is no formation of argillic horizon in subsurface layers.

  • The study conducted an experiment in which residual aggregate and polypropylene fibers are mixed in concrete, and an experiment in which granite and polypropylene fibers are mixed. Two types of experiments, in particular, changed the amount of polypropylene fibers, and examined the mechanical properties of slump, compressive strength, tensile strength and the like. To establish a light and easy-to-use material for landscape construction and packaging material development by comparing two kinds of experimental results, comparing and analyzing residual aggregate as experimental materials and materials using granite soil to prevent partial destruction due to cracks in drying shrinkage. The more the amount of the PP fibers increases in concrete, the more the volume of the PP fibers increases, the less the slump is determined. As a result of the compressive strength, the cast-down earth concrete is measured to be about 59% to 71% of the concrete strength. As the amount of PP fibers mixed in increased, the compression strength showed a relative decrease. As a result of tensile strength, it is found that the granite concrete is about 68-67% of concrete tensile strength. It was found that the compression strength decreased as the amount of PP fibers mixed in concrete or fire-gant concrete was increased. Then, when polypropylene fibers are mixed in the concrete and the concrete, it is found that tensile strength is increased. By analyzing these results, a fixed amount of PP fiber is mixed in the concrete mixed with the granite soil and utilized for various structures in the field of landscape construction or materials related to packaging, the prevention and improvement effect of the structure is determined.

  • In this study, the shear behavior between pile-sandy soil interface was quantified based on series of rigorous ring shear test results. Ring shearing test was carried out to observe the shear behavior prior to failure and behavior at residual state between most commonly used pile materials - steel and concrete - and Jumunjin sand. The test was set to clarify the shear behavior under various confinement conditions and soil densities. The test results were converted in to representative friction angles for various test materials. Additional numerical analysis was executed to validate the accuracy of the test results. Based on the test results and the numerical validation, it was found that due to the dilative and contractive nature of sand, its interface behavior can be categorized in to two different types : soils with higher densities tend to show peak shear stress and moves on to residual state, while on the other hand, soils with lower densities tend to show bilinear load-transfer curves along the interface. However, the relative density and the confining stress was found to affect the friction angle only in the small train range, and converges as it progresses to large deformation. This study established a large deformation analysis method which can successfully simulate and predict the large deformation behavior such as ring shear tests. Moreover, the friction angle derived from the ring shear test result and verified by numerical analysis can be applied to numerical analysis and actual design of various pile foundations.

  • Effects of grinding time and chemicals dosage in arsenic removal from contaminated paddy soil in China were investigated using lab scale attrition and froth flotation combining process. Arsenic concentration in the field soil was 76.51 mg/kg, exceeding Korean and Chinese standards, and predominant arsenic compounds fraction in sequential extraction was "residual" (over 80%). After wet sieving, soil with >2 mm and < 0.038 mm showed concentration lower than 'Warning Level' in Korea. Soil with 0.038-0.075 mm, showing the highest concentration, was discarded since it occupied minor weight fraction (10.1%). Thus soil between 0.075 and 2 mm was only used in the combining process. The highest Arsenic concentration in progeny fragments smaller than 0.038 mm reached up to 981.66 mg/kg after 5 min of attrition. Optimal dosage of collector ($C_5H_{11}OCS_2K$) and modifier ($Na_2S$ and $CuSO_4$) in froth flotation process for the selective separation of the chipped progeny particles from the parent fragments were determined both as 200 g/ton. Arsenic removal efficiency in froth flotation process was 38.47% and it was increased to 72.74% in additional flotation process, scavenging. Average arsenic concentration after overall process - wet sieving, attrition and froth flotation - was estimated to 16.45 mg/kg.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the desalinizing effect of some vegetable crops (beet, crown daisy, kale, lettuce, spinach, sweet com, and tomato) in salinized soil. The soil was treated with highly concentrated nutrient solutions and the growth of these crops was compared and soil salinity was monitored. The plant height of lettuce and crown daisy inhibited severely in with EC $5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ salinized soil. Soil EC level was the lowest in soil where tomato was cultivated followed by corn and kale. The residual level of $NO_3$ was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn, tomato, and kale, that of K was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn, tomato, and beet, and That of $P_2O_5$ was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn and tomato. Although the desalinizing effect was greatest by tomato and corn after 60 days of cultivation. Quality of the these crops was low and the cultivation periods of these crops overlapped with that of the main crops. Kale, on the other hand showed less growth inhibition in salinized soil, greatest desalinating effect based on fresh weight. In addition this crop only needs 30 days of cultivation period. Therefore, kale was most efficient crop in desalinizing considering crop quality, a short cultivation period, and nonoverlapping cultivation time with the main crops.

  • Fluidized-bed thermal desorber coupled with a heat pipe was investigated for the remediation of soil contaminated with diesel oils. Thermal gravimetric analysis by Cahn-balance indicated that the desorption of diesel oils from the soil particles was mainly governed by the internal diffusion at low concentration of less than 0.5 wt. % of oils in the soil particles. In fluidized-bed experiments. increase of fluidizing gas velocity reduced the residual oils of the contaminated soils, the increase of soil feed rate decreased efficiency of fluidized-bed desorber. A mathematical model was developed by incorporating Fickian diffusion kinetics into the Kunii-Levenspiel model Simulation results showed reasonable agreement for the performance of fluidized-bed thermal desorber.

  • Purpose: To ascertain the increase of the farm income that predominantly relies on human resources by mechanizing Welsh onion harvesting, a tractor-mounted Welsh onion harvester was developed in this study. Method: An experiment for evaluating harvesting performance was performed for the developed Welsh onion harvester in an actual Welsh onion farm. The harvest performance was evaluated at the tractor running speeds of 5.0 cm/s, 11.4 cm/s and 15.8 cm/s, by comparing the operating efficiency, harvest rate, and damage rate of the Welsh onion harvester. Results: The performance of the harvester was rated as very good, with a 100% harvest rate, regardless of tractor running speed. Furthermore, it is shown that work efficiency of the harvester is expected to increase as the running speed increases. Nonetheless, the damage rate of the harvested Welsh onions at running speeds 5.0 cm/s, 11.4 cm/s, and 15.8 cm/s, increased correspondingly and proportionally to speeds from 4.55% to 6.53% and to 11.29%. The residual amount of soil on the harvested Welsh onions was about 0.24% of their weight showing excellent soil-removal performance of the harvester. Conclusion: The developed Welsh onion harvester is believed to improve the labor productivity and cultivation environment of Welsh onion farmhouses by the mechanization of the harvesting process that is currently associated with the largest amount of labor hours.

  • The problems associated with constructing high-speed concrete track embankments over soft compressible soil has lead to the development and/or extensive use of many of the ground improvement techniques used today. Drains, surcharge loading, and geosynthetic reinforcement, have all been used to solve the settlement and embankment stability issues associated with construction on soft soils. However, when time constraints are critical to the success of the project, owners have resorted to another innovative approach. Especially, the design criteria of residual settlement is limited as 30mm for concrete track embankment, it is very difficult to satisfy this standard using the former construction method. Pile net method consist of vertical columns that are designed to transfer the load of the embankment through the soft compressible soil layer to a firm foundation and one or more layers of geosynthetic reinforcement placed between the top of the columns and the bottom of the embankment. This paper will present the guidelines for the design of pile net method to supported embankments. These guidelines were developed based on a review of current design methodologies and a parametric study of design variables using numerical modeling.
