A Study on the Wedding Dress Design of Korea Images - Focused on Pear Blossoms Pattern and Dang-$\breve{u}$i(唐衣) Images - (한국적 이미지의 웨딩드레스 디자인 연구 - 이화문(梨花紋)과 당의(唐衣)이미지를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this research is to design and to produce actual high value added wedding dress comprised of the pear blossoms pattern(梨花紋), which is one of the traditional patterns which was not researched to this day, and of the Dang-$\breve{u}$i(唐衣) image which reflects our concept of beauty as if as a means of conducting empirical study for the application of traditional Korean patterns to the contemporary application. pear blossoms effectively signifie the image of beautiful bride thanks to the pure, graceful and clean image of white flower, both in the external and internal aspects. The Dang-$\breve{u}$i of the Chosun Dynasty, which is another motif is one of the representative clothing that expresses the beauty of the curve when it comes to the Korean culture as traditional wedding dress. Attempt was made to develop design for wedding dress that expresses the Korean style beauty that combined the tradition and the modern. Towards this end, the project was composed of the Korean-like Ewha, image of the Dang-$\breve{u}$i I, II and III to design three dresses. The Dress I presents the image of pure, elegant and beautiful bride, while Dress II represents the pure and city like trendiness of the Korean women today as bride. Dress III was made centered on the image of elegant, and chaste bride. As for the materials used, hand-woven silk and silk organza used for the traditional clothes. As for the ornaments, embroidery, quilted work, beads, corsage, burn-out and other techniques were used for expression.

  • Biological activities and anticarcinogenicity of Korean Pear peel were investigated, Electron donating activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of fraction II, III were up to 80% and 50-60% at 50 ppm, respectively, Inhibitory effects on xanthine oxidase were about 80% at 50 ppm, breast adenocarcinoma was about 60% at 2,000 ppm, higher III than II Inhibitory effect on prostate adenocarcinoma was about 23% at 500 ppm. In conclusion, Korean pear peel was expected to use as a functional material.

  • This study was initiated to find out the suitable perennial ground covers naturally grown in thirteen organic orchards in Chonnam Province as a organic nutrient source for maintaining annual fruit tree growth. The ground covers were observed in April, June, and August in the orchards. Agropyron tsukusinense and Panicum virgatum observed in April and June, respectively, produced the highest dry weight, which increased amounts of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$, mineralizing from the residue in the ground covers. The occurrence of perennial ground covers in August decreased compared to April and June. Amount of residue in mowed Agropyron tsukusinense and Panicum virgatum satisfied nutrient demand (N; 20 kg/10a, $P_2O_5$; 11 kg/10a, and $K_2O$; 19 kg/10a) to achieve the annual growth of twenty-year old fruit tree.

Genetic relationships of pear germplasms using simple sequence repeat marker (SSR 마커를 이용한 배 유전자원의 유연관계)

  • This study analyzed the genetic diversity of 115 pear germplasms using 15 SSR markers. Three to forty-one SSR alleles were detected for each locus with an average of 16 alleles per locus. The average availability of markers was 0.966. The average observed heterozygosity ($H_{obs}$) was 0.603 (range: 0.140 to 0.929). The average expected heterozygosity ($H_{exp}$) was 0.718 (range: 0.463 to 0.904). The average polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.692 (range: 0.403 to 0.897). The genetic relationships of pear germplasms were classified into two major groups by geographic origins and genetic characteristics according to genetic distance. The first group was composed of European pear belonging to Pyrus communis. The second group consisted of P. pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis, P. bretschneideri, P. betulaefolia, P. calleryana, interspecific hybrids, and unclear germplasms. The results of this study suggest that genotype analysis of pear germplasms using SSR markers can identify the genetic diversity of germplasms, and can be used to provide basic information for pear breeding.

Comparison of Fruit Development and Quality Indices According to Blossom Thinning on Early-season 'Hanareum' and Mid-season 'Niitaka' Pears (조생종 '한아름' 및 중생종 '신고' 배의 적화처리에 따른 과실 비대 및 품질 비교)

  • In this study, we evaluated the differences in fruit development and quality indices of fruits subjected to blossom thinning before full bloom in 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka' pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). We carried out a thinning treatments at 5 days before full bloom, targeting the blossoms at the 1st and 2nd position (T1) or the blossoms at the 6th and 7th position (T2) from the basal part of the flower cluster in both cultivars. Blossom thinning treatments increased the average fruit weight of early-season Asian pear 'Hanareum' up to 10.5% (T1) and 11.0% (T2) at harvest time (110 days after full bloom). The mid-season 'Niitaka' pear showed increased fruit weight of up to 12.6% (T1) and 16.8% (T2) at harvest time (170 days after full bloom). Moreover, these treatments increased the production rate of bigger sized fruits in both cultivars. Removal of blooms also affected fruit quality indices; the bloom-thinned fruits showed higher soluble solids contents (about $1^{\circ}Brix$) and higher skin color redness ($a^*$) especially in 'Niitaka' pears when compared to the non-thinned controls. Overall, the treatments increased the fruit size and weight as well as fruit quality including soluble solids and skin color. Bloom thinning treatment targeting the 6th to 7th blossom from the basal part of the flower cluster may be recommended as the practical thinning method in Asian pear 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka'.

Quality Changes of Green Tea on Anaerobic Treatment by Various Storage Temperature and Period (저장온도 및 기간별 혐기처리 녹차의 품질 변화)

  • Anaerobic treated green teas were sealed with aluminum pack and stored for 12 months at three different temperatures such as 25, 4, or $-10^{\circ}C$. Anaerobic green teas were evaluated with respect to physiochemical properties and physiological functions. The longer anaerobic green teas were stored, their total nitrogen, tannins, or chlorophyll contents were reduced. Especially, the lower storage temperature of green tea resulted in less loss of physiochemical contents in green tea. Since green teas stored at $-10^{\circ}C$ exhibited less loss of physiochemical contents, compared to green teas stored at 25 or $4^{\circ}C$. The qualities of green teas stored at $-10^{\circ}C$ for 12 months were similar with those of teas stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 8 months or stored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 months. Since 'a' value (green color) of green tea was considered as an important criteria to evaluate the tea quality. Anaerobic teas stored for 12 months were monitored their 'a' color values with -12.40 (fresh one), -10.54 ($-10^{\circ}C$), -9.77 ($4^{\circ}C$), and -9.06 ($25^{\circ}C$). Sensory evaluation results showed that anaerobic teas at $-10^{\circ}C$ were more favored than those at or 4 or $25^{\circ}C$. In conclusion, optimum storage temperature for anaerobic green teas should be $-10^{\circ}C$.

  • Genetic manipulation of pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) breeding is still difficult due to lack of reliable regeneration system. The aim of this research is to establish shoot regeneration system from leaf explants for pear (P. pyrifolia cv. Niitaka) using various concentrations of plant growth regulators and carbon source supplemented to medium. The highest regeneration rate of about 20% was found on a medium containing 4.4 g/L of Murashige and Skoog (MS) without vitamins, Linsmaier and Skoog (LS) vitamins were added separately. Leaf explants of pear were cultured on MS medium containing 7 g/L of Daishin agar supplemented with various concentrations of NAA (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 mg/L) in combination with BA(3, 5, 10 mg/L) for shoot regeneration. In medium with 5 mg/L of BA and 0.01 mg/L of NAA, adventitious shoot regeneration rate was higher than others treated. The optimal results were observed using MS medium supplemented with 30 g/L sorbitol as carbon source on regeneration system. Sorbitol is considered better carbon source than sucrose for shoot regeneration of pear (P. pyrifolia cv. Niitaka). In order to increase of shoot regeneration in pear (P. pyrifolia cv. Niitaka), plant agar and Daishin agar used as gelling agents, Daishin agar is more efficient in shoot regeneration.

Effects of Paper Bag Coated Calcium on the Calcium Concentration, Lenticel Development, and Quality in 'Chuhwangbae' Pear Fruits (칼슘이 코팅된 봉지 괘대가 '추황배' 과실의 칼슘함량, 과점 발달 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In a pear fruit 'Chuhwangbae' was investigated the effect of the calcium-coated double paper bag on the physical properties of the paper bag, micro meteorological phenomena, and calcium contents in quality of fruit. The calcium-coated paper bag, compared with official paper bags, did not give any effect on light transmission ratio and tensile strength. The change of the inside relative humidity of the paper bag was a little compared with conventional paper bags, but there was no difference in temperature. The contents of the accumulated calcium of the pericarp was remarkably greater than conventional paper bags during the period of 65 days to 160 days after the full bloom, but the flesh remarkably increased at 160 days. The calcium content per concentration of calcium coating greatly increased in 12% of yellow double paper bags and 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp, and in 3% of yellow double paper bags and 6, 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp. As a result of treatment of a radioactive isotope, the amount of accumulated calcium in the pericarp continued until 60 hours after treatment, but there was no difference in the calcium amount between the flesh and no-treatment pericarp. As to the hardness of fruits at the time of harvest, there was no difference in the concentration in case of a yellow double bags. But newspaper double paper bags 6, 12% was significantly difference. Soluble solid remarkably increased in yellow double paper bags 6, 9% and yellow double paper bags 3, 6, 9%. Also, it did not effect on changes of the pericarp, fruit weight and the color of the pericarp.

Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks of Trees and Soils in a 'Niitaka' Pear Orchard ('신고'배 재배지 내 수체 및 토양의 탄소 및 질소 저장량)

  • To report country-specific carbon and nitrogen stocks data in a pear orchard by Tier 3 approach of 2006 IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories, an experimental pear orchard field of the Pear Research Station, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, Naju, Korea ($35^{\circ}01^{\prime}27.70N$, $126^{\circ}44^{\prime}53.50^{\prime\prime}E$, 6 m altitude), where 15-year-old 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai cv. Niitaka) trees were planted at a $5.0m{\times}3.0m$ spacing on a Tatura trellis system, was chosen to assess the total amount of carbon and nitrogen stocks stored in the trees and orchard soil profiles. At the sampling time (August 2012), three trees were uprooted, and separated into six fractions: trunk, main branches, lateral branches (including shoots), leaves, fruits, and roots. Soil samples were collected from 0 to 0.6 m depth at 0.1 m intervals at 0.5 m from the trunk. Dry mass per tree was 4.7 kg for trunk, 13.3 kg for main branches, 13.9 kg for lateral branches, 3.7 kg for leaves, 6.7 kg for fruits, and 14.1 kg for roots. Amounts of C and N per tree were respectively 2.3 and 0.02 kg for trunk, 6.4 and 0.07 kg for main branches, 6.4 and 0.09 kg for lateral branches, 6.5 and 0.07 kg for roots, 1.7 and 0.07 kg for leaves, and 3.2 and 0.03 kg for fruits. Carbon and nitrogen stocks stored between the soil surface and a depth of 60 cm were 138.29 and $13.31Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, respectively, while those contained in pear trees were 17.66 and $0.23Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ based on a tree density of 667 $trees{\cdot}ha^{-1}$. Overall, carbon and nitrogen stocks per hectare stored in a pear orchard were 155.95 and 13.54 Mg, respectively.

The Pear Black Necrotic Leaf Spot Disease Virus Transmitted by Talaromyces flavus Displays Pathogenicity Similar to Apple stem grooving virus Strains

  • The pathogenicity to pear trees and other experimental hosts of the Apple stem grooving virus Korean isolate (ASGV-K) carried by a fungal vector, Talaromyces flavus was examined. ASGV-harboring T. flavus induced mild symptoms on virus-free pears. Symptom severity was intermediate between pears showing typical PBNLS and virus-free pears. Ten cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris showed 35%-90% infectivity by direct infiltration into leaves and roots by ASGV-harboring T. flavus. Application of fungal cultures to soils showed 0%-70% infectivity depending on the P. vulgaris cultivar. Sap extracted from ASGV-infected Chenopodium quinoa induced similar symptoms on P. vulgaris at 25 days after inoculation. Similar symptoms were also detected on P. vulgaris which were inoculated with ASGV-harboring T.flavus. When healthy P. vulgaris leaves were challenged with sap extracted from P. vulgaris leaves infected with ASGV-harboring T. flavus, typical symptoms were observed. These data suggest that T. flavus mediates the transfer of ASGV to host plants.
