  • Seung Ma(升摩) is a famous Chinese crude drug used for treatment of fever, piles and suppurative inflamation. With regard to the botanical origin of Seung Ma, it has been considered to be Cimicifuga spicies of Ranunculaceae, but there has no phrarmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of Seung Ma from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Cimicfuga dahurica, Cimicifuga foetida, Cimicfuga heracleifolia and Cimicifuga simplex were studied. As a result, it was clarified that Seung Ma from Korea was the rhizomes of Cimicifuga dahurica, C, foetida and C, heracleifolia.

  • 'BaegDuOng(白頭翁)' is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly as a pruritus, arthritis, cough and abdominal pain. The botanical origin of the crude drug has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'BaegDuOng', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Pulsatilla species growing in Korea, i.e. Pulsatilla koreana Nakai and P. cernua (Thunb.) Spreng. were studied. As a result, BaegDuOng from Korea was proved to be the root of Pulsatilla koreana.

  • In our recent investigation of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among globular clusters (GCs), we have shown that the RR Lyrae variables in the Oosterhoff groups I, II, and III are produced mostly by first, second, and third generation stars (G1, G2, and G3), respectively. Unlike GCs, RR Lyrae stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxies show Oosterhoff-intermediate characteristics. The origin of this, however, is yet to be understood. In this poster, we will present our progress in understanding the origin of this phenomenon.

  • On 2018 March 27, a 1-m telescope was installed at the SNU Astronomical Observatory (SAO) which is a newly constructed building at the site where the previous Kwanak Observatory (Old observatory; 구천문대) stood. A series of test observations have been performed on this telescope, and we report the first results from the test observations in this poster. In particular, we present seeing values, limiting magnitudes and sample images taken with a $4k{\times}4k$ CCD camera ($21^{\prime}{\times}21^{\prime}$).

  • 'Gu Maig(瞿麥)' is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure a diuretic, gonorhoea and menostasis, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Gu Maig', it has been considered to be Dianthus spp. of Caryophyllaceae, but there has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of the "Gu Maig", the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and stems of Dianthus species growing in Korea, i.e. D. sinensis, D. superbus var. longicalycinus, D. repens, D. morii, D. superbus var. speciosus were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Gu Maig' was the whole plant body of Dianthus sinensis and D. superbus var. longicalycinus.
