After the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, the national health commission of the people's republic of China distributed guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Based on that, each region of China made guidelines for traditional Chinese medical treatment of COVID-19 applicable to clinical field. Under the hypothesis that each region's guideline contains regional characteristics, a comparison was made on pattern identification among each region's guidelines and central guidelines. At the beginning of the analysis of the cases, opinions on pattern identification vary from region to region, and the diversity is mainly reflected in the early stage of the disease. When the guideline is organized to a certain level due to the accumulation of clinical cases, there is a strong tendency to enumerate various types of pattern identification. It means that as a specific infectious disease progresses, it can appear in various cases due to variables. In some guidelines, disease stages were analyzed by only a limited pathological mechanism, but no regional characteristics were found here. Rather, it may mean that unique characteristics for disease can be derived.

Objectives : By analyzing symptoms of tinnitus, we tried to find out the relationship between deficiency and excess(虛實) and visceral pattern identification(臟腑辨證). By testing Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI), we evaluated the quality of life of people suffering from various aspects of tinnitus, as well as comparing treatment efficiency. Methods : 52 patients were recruited in this study who was ill with tinnitus. They wrote out the questionnaire about tinnitus and the THI. Results : The vast majority of high-grade tiny noise patients are deficiency type(虛症). The vast majority of low-grade roar patients are excess type(實症). Tinnitus persistence and feeling of ear occlusion were prominent in low-grade roar patients. low-grade roar patients suggest that overall quality of life is lower than high-grade tiny noise patients. In terms of treatment efficiency, spleen-stomach weakness(脾胃虛弱)-type, stomach heat(胃熱)-type and phlegm-fire(痰火)-type was higher than kidney essence depletion(腎精虧損)-type and liver qi depression(肝氣鬱結)-type regardless of the aspect of tinnitus. Conclusions : The present study suggests that tinnitus pattern may be helpful in differentiating patients with tinnitus, and the effectiveness of treatment can be predicted through differentiation.

Common cold occurs frequently and occupies an important position in medical treatment however obvious treatment is not suggested. There has been no agreement of pattern identification for common cold in oriental medicine. The purpose of this study is to develop a standard instrument of pattern identification for common cold which will be applied to clinical research. The items and structure of the instrument were based on review of published literature. The advisor committee on this study was organized by 9 oriental respiratory internal medicine professors of 11 oriental medical colleges nationwide. The experts attended 3 consultation meetings and discussed developing the instrument, and we also took professional advices by e-mail. The results were as follows; First, we divided the pattern identification of common cold into nine pattern: Wind-cold type, Wind-heat type, Contain summerheat type, Contain dampness type, Qi deficiency type, Blood deficiency type, Yang deficiency type, Yin deficiency type, Influenza. Second, we got the mean weights to each symptom of nine pattern identification which had been scored on a 5-point scale - ranging from 0 to 4 by the 9 experts. Third, we made out the Korean instrument of the pattern identification for common cold. It was composed self reporting questionnaire and researcher reporting questionnaire. Though this study is not proved about validity, reliability, the instrument of pattern identification for common cold is meaningful and expected to be applied to the subsequent research. And also, we hope to improve the instrument and make up for this study through various research and discussion.

The aim of this survey is to investigate the current state of pattern identification, treatment and management on chronic fatigue in the Korean medicine. From May 25, 2017 to June 7, we distributed contents of questionnaires to 17,992 Korean medical doctors via e-mail, and then received answers from 329 people. The surveys were conducted by a specialized research organizations. Researchers were blinded to the participant's personally identifiable information or whether they participated in the investigation. In Korea, almost Korean medicine doctors (94.5%) used pattern identification in the treatment of chronic fatigue patients. The main diagnostic methods were visceral (38.5%), qi-blood-fluid-humor (32.3%), and sasang constitutional pattern identification (14.3%). The high-frequent therapy were herbal medicine (37.0%), acupuncture (27.9%), moxibustion (11.7%), and cupping (8.6%). The primary goals of treatment were Improvement and relaxation of stress condition (18.1%), improvement of quality of life (13.1%), increase of functional vitality (34.0%), and fatigue management (23.3%). The key factors affecting treatment outcomes were the patient's aggressiveness in treatment (23.5%) and his/her lifestyle and environment(22.7%). This study was a pioneering research for chronic fatigue on the aspect of medical service provider in the Korean medicine. We hope that this study can be used as a basis for developing a more appropriate and reasonable practice guidelines for chronic fatigue.
State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People's Republic of China lead Research on Chao medicine's Constitutional Treatment project by which could involve the following principles. First, constitution can be identified, second, constitution correlates to ones susceptibility to diseases, third, constitution can be harmonized, fourth, prescription made according to ones constitution and patterns. These ideas is originated by Lee Je-ma's theory of Four Constitution Type in "DongEuiSooSeBoWon"(Longetivity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine). This is much similar to currents trends of personalized medicine in western medical sciences. Therefore further developing Lee's theory would have significant value on various fields of medicine.
The purpose of this case report is to describe the effect of Korean medicine therapy on patient with migraine. We treated migraine for 2 months using a Korean medical treatment and six-meridian pattern identification, including herbal medicine (Soshiho-tang), acupuncture, cupping, chuna, and pharmacopuncture. The measurements included a numerical rating scale (NRS), migraine disability assessment (MIDAS), headache impact test-6 (HIT-6), and migraine specific quality of life questionnaire (MSQoL) to confirm the effectiveness of the herbal medicine treatment. After treatment, the patient's complaints decreased, as shown by the results of the NRS, MIDAS, HIT-6, and MSQoL. For migraines, Korean medical treatment and six-meridian pattern identification, such as herbal medicine (Soshiho-tang), has beneficial effects for the control of migraine and improvement in the quality of life.

In Traditional Oriental Medicine, there has been a growing needs for computerized diagnosis expert system, which can implement pre-diagnosis and correct the errors of practitioners. Therefore, we developed the expert system (KHU-PIPE : Kyung Hee University - Pattern Identification and Prescription Expert) for diagnosis and treatment. It has three characteristics as following. First. this system has the knowledge base which modified the standardized data designed by Chinese government during 1980s. Second, it provides the objective and standardized diagnosis as the results of pattern identification and their appropriate prescriptions for treatment. Third, it is applied to both LAN system and internet. Furthermore, it can be used as an educational methods for the practices of pattern identification and prescription, and provide the objective criteria for clinical studies and promote the Traditional Oriental Medicine as an evidence-based medicine.
