Innovation, esp. technological innovation, in service sectors has drawn much attention as innovation-driven economy and service-led growth has been emphasized in the 21st century. This paper attempts to analyze the technological innovation from the perspective of geography and to understand the role of cooperative networks in the technological innovation. In sum, this study reveals that more firms in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) tended to succeed in the technological innovation in service sectors than those in the provinces. However, the difference originated from the difference in firms' internal capabilities, not from the difference in the external innovative capabilities represented by cooperative networks relevant to innovative milieu. In terms of cooperative partners, the fm in the provinces placed special importance on universities as cooperative partners, while the firms in the SMA put much emphasis on various types of cooperative partners. The cooperation with private partners was a statistically meaningful variable for the occurrence of technological innovation, regardless of firms' location. The cooperation with public partners proved to influence firms' application for the intellectual property right such as patents in both the SMA and the provinces.

Purpose: For improving outgoing quality, this study presents a novel sampling framework based on predictive analytics. Methods: The proposed framework is composed of three steps. The first step is the variable selection. The knowledge-based and data-driven approaches are employed to select important variables. The second step is the model learning. In this step, we consider the supervised classification methods, the anomaly detection methods, and the rule-based methods. The applying model is the third step. This step includes the all processes to be enabled on real-time prediction. Each prediction model classifies a product as a target sample or random sample. Thereafter intensive quality inspections are executed on the specified target samples. Results: The inspection data of three Samsung products (mobile, TV, refrigerator) are used to check functional defects in the product by utilizing the proposed method. The results demonstrate that using target sampling is more effective and efficient than random sampling. Conclusion: The results of this paper show that the proposed method can efficiently detect products that have the possibilities of user's defect in the lot. Additionally our study can guide practitioners on how to easily detect defective products using stratified sampling
Purpose - On the basis of knowledge transfer theory, we empirically explored how three types of human resource (HR) innovation knowledge exchange within a Chaebol drive the global subsidiary performance of the headquarters (HQ) of a Chaebol's globally affiliated companies. Design/methodology - Using a sample of 176 Korean HQ firms of the top 53 Chaebols and 1,061 of their foreign manufacturing subsidiaries (n = 1,061), we tested the relationship between the exchange of explorative and exploitative sustainable HR innovation knowledge among HQ firms of Chaebols, their subsequent transfer of technical HR knowledge via technical schemas, and the subsequent impact on the global subsidiary performance. Findings - The Chaebols' decisions about the three strategic knowledge management options (i.e., the degree of exchange of explorative and exploitative technological HR innovation knowledge and the extent of HQ-subsidiary HR knowledge transfer) have highly significant relationships with the global subsidiary performance. The results help explains the conditions under which the explorative versus exchange of exploitative sustainable HR innovation knowledge pays off by showing the moderating role of the degree of HQ-to-subsidiary technical HR knowledge transfer, at least in the case of the Chaebol as one representative type of the emerging-market business groups. Originality/value - As the first of its kind in the field of sustainable HR innovation knowledge management at the business group level, the present study makes a clear contribution in demonstrating how the performance of Chaebols' manufacturing subsidiaries depends greatly on their strategy for management of knowledge, as reflected in the choices they make about sharing both explorative and exploitative sustainable HR innovation knowledge among HQ firms and the subsequent transfer of HQ's sustainable HR innovation knowledge to the foreign subsidiaries.
This study aims to analyze determinants and complementarities of the technological innovation protection mechanisms of Korean manufacturing firms. The results of the inter-industry comparison show that there are differentiations of the determinants among industries. Independence between legal and strategic protection mechanisms is found in the high technology industry, whereas complementarities exist between them in the low technology industry. It implies that the firms should take into account their endogenous and exogenous factors to choose appropriate combinations of the mechanisms when they build up their innovation protection strategies. This study expects to contribute to establishing technological innovation protection strategies in manufacturing industry.
Korean technological innovation is characterized by large firm-leading and characterized sector such as electricity and electronics. We examine the relationship between two elements. Using patent data registered at USPTO by Korean firms, We examine the relationship between patterns of innovative activities and sectoral specialization. As a result, Korean technological innovation is characterized by relatively high asymmetry, big share of large firms, high stability of ranking of innovators and diminishing role of newcomer, therefore as close as Schumpeter Mark II. But technological specialization is associated positively with the big share of large firms, negatively with low stability of ranking of innovators. It means that Korean technological innovation is led by large firms, but quantitative growth and technological specialization is achieved through competition between them.

The service industry, as a new growth engine, has become more important in response to changes in the global economy and the industrial environment. Developed countries have promoted the competitiveness of the service industry and have enhanced economic added value. Developing new services requires extensive resources. Therefore, cooperation and network building capabilities with customers, suppliers, and various knowledge creation agencies are critical sources of competitiveness. This study classified the Korean service industry by industrial type in order to enhance innovation competence. The Korean service industry lags behind that of developed countries, and this study analyzed the differences of innovation results according to collaboration partners by the classified industry. By adopting a method that applies industrial classification by Dialogic's innovation pattern, this study showed external cooperation results were different by industrial type. Analysis results revealed that companies cooperate with customers and competitors in many cases; however, product innovation was higher for companies that collaborated with private service companies. In the 'Innovation in services' industry, industry cooperation with universities showed organizational innovation achievements. In the 'Innovation through services' industry, cooperation with customers positively affected marketing innovation achievements. Consequently, the need to foster consulting firms and universities that can professionally collaborate with companies is implied in order to enhance the Korean service industry.
This paper analyzes how the concept of 'technological innovation' has changed in South Korea. We conducted keyword co-occurrence network analysis on articles in Science and Technology, a magazine published by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies since 1968. With writers and readership from professional science and technology communities, government officers, as well as citizens, Science and Technology is a suitable archival source to represent discourses relating to South Korean use of the term 'technological innovation'. We used all the articles from 1968 to 2017 that include the term 'technological innovation' in their title. Also, we analyzed the keywords that co-occur with 'technological innovation' by the frame divided into three periods. The following conclusions were elicited: The term 'technological innovation' has been understood as a leading factor for government-driven industrial development since the 1960s. Nevertheless, the meaning of the term evolved over time. In the 1960s and 70s, 'technological innovation' referred to the introduction, assimilation, and transfer of technology. However, since the 1980s it has acquired a more multilateral meaning, connecting various industrial sectors and interest groups. This conclusion reveals that the meaning of 'technological innovation' is not static, but rather it is constructed over time. This study is expected to contribute to research on the direction of the technological innovation policy of Korea.

This study proposes an integrated use of region and industry as a way to classify firms' innovation activities by type. Existing studies have used the method of determining innovative activities according to the components of the technological regimes and aggregating them by industry classification, but this method cannot fully reflect the heterogeneity within industries in an increasingly sophisticated innovation environment. Therefore, this study divides firms by region and industry and conducts a cluster analysis on the proportion of innovative activities by the components of the technological regimes to derive a total of four innovation types. Using the 2016 Korean Innovation Survey to classify innovation types in the manufacturing industry, we found that innovation activities are concentrated in Seoul, Busan, Incheon, and Chungnam/ Sejong/ Daejeon area, with different deviations by region and industry. The results of the aggregation of industrial innovation activities, weighted by corporate activity by region, show that the level of innovation activity in some manufacturing industries, such as petrochemicals, manufacturing of medical, precision and optical instruments, watches and clocks, is high, but the level of innovation in other sectors within the manufacturing industry is generally low.

It is generally thought that the quality management and the six sigma management innovation are not applicable to service industry, which might be derived from some differences between service and manufacturing industries. However, both are substantially alike in some intrinsic attributes. KT is leading the Quality management and the six sigma innovation activities in service industry, especially among telecommunication companies in Korea. Six sigma management innovation has been fostered in KT within short period of time and played an important role in helping KT privatized successfully. The successful cases of six sigma innovation activities in KT could be introduced to other Korean companies in service industry.
131I is a fission product produced in a nuclear reactor by irradiating tellurium dioxide, with a half-life of 8.02 day. The most important and widely used method for making 131I is irradiation using a nuclear reactor and post-irradiation followed by dry distillation. The advantage of the dry distillation process is that the process and the equipment are relatively simple, namely TeO2 (m.p. 750 ℃), which can withstand heating during reactor irradiation. Based on TeO2 irradiation by neutron following the technique of dry distillation was explained for production of 131I on a large scale. A dry distillation followed the radioisotope production operation using the 30 MW GA Siwabessy nuclear reactor to meet national demand. TeO2 targets are 25 and 50 g irradiated for 87-100 h. The resulting 131I activity is 20.29339-368.50335GBq. According to the requirements imposed on the radionuclide purity of the preparation, the contribution of 131I training in the resulting preparation was not less than 99.9 %
