  • The rock materials from the two stone heritages in the Seonbonsa temple, Gwanbong Seokjoyeoraejwasang (stone Buddha) and three-storied Stone Pagoda, show almost identical petrographic characteristics. They are greyish white porphyritic granites which mainly consist of plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz, biotite, hornblende, and chlorite. The rocks from the both heritages are petrographically similar to those from the outcrops of the Palgongsan granite near the temple. Modal compositions exhibit that the rocks from the stone Buddha belong to monzogranite, whereas those from the pagoda and the outcrop near the temple correspond to syeno- to monzo granite. Whole rock magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the rocks from the stone Buddha, the pagoda, and the outcrop have nearly the same susceptibility values ranging 9-16(${\times}10^{-3}\;SI$). Gamma spectrometer data obtained from these rocks also demonstrate the same value range. In conclusion the two stone heritages in the Seonbonsa temple were made of the Palgongsan granite surrounding the temple.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the classifying ability of the igneous rocks with the naked eye for 36 preservice science teachers. For this, we selected six specimens of igneous rocks that consisted of rhyolite, andesite, basalt, granite, diorite, and gabbro, and performed the questionnaire with them. Preservice science teachers needed the average of 3 tools to classify the rocks. Most of the selected tools were loupe, streak plate, hammer and Mohs’ hardness scale. Many preservice science teachers selected basalt and granite samples to classify igneous rocks among 6 kinds of the rocks which were exhibited. However, the results of the identification with the naked eye showed that the right answer rate was significantly different based on what rock sample had been selected. Nobody gave the right answer among 10 students who chose the rhyolite sample, but all of 36 students who picked the basalt sample answered correctly. And $62\%$ of 8 students who chose the andesite sample, 62% of 32 student choosing granite, $7\%$ of 13 students choosing diorite and $44\%$ of 9 students choosing gabbro were correctly answered. In identifying igneous rock samples with the naked eye, most subjects relied on vesicular texture to basalt, and they used textural, color and empirical characters to granite. But, some felt more or less difficulty to distinguish between intermediate and light colors and to recognize porphyry.

  • The Samsung mine is located in Jeongsan-myeon, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and is produces sericite ores. The purpose of this study is to investigate the geology and mineralogy of sericite one and its host-rock together with the alteration processes and age of sericitization. Geological survey, polarizing microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, X-ray fluorescent analysis, differential thermal analysis, and K/Ar isotope study have been employed for this study. The mine area is composed of Precambrian granite-gneiss and mica schist, and also Jurassic biotite granite. Serictization has occured within the granite-gneiss, and is interpreted to be formed by hydrothermal alteration. The sericite was formed by the breakdown of orthoclase, plagioclase, and biotite, respectively. With sericitization intensity increase, $SiO_2\;and\;Na_2O$ contents are decreased, while $Al_2O_3\;and\;K_2O$ increased. The formation age of sericite has been determined to be Jurassic, which corresponds well to the intrusion age of the biotite granite nearby.

  • In order to understand the processes involved in the petrogenesis and the differentiation of the primary magma spectrum, a petrological and geochemical properties were investigated for the Chonju and the Sunchang foliated granites, which are located in the southwestern part of the Okchon zone and extends up to the northwestern boundary of the Ryongnam massif as two subparallel batholiths. Major element analyses show that the Chonju and Sunchang foliated granites are classified petrologically into a weakly to strongly peraluminous or calc-alkaline, but do not fit neatly into either of the I/S-type or magnetite/ilmenite-series classification schemes for granites, although the I-type and magnetite-series characteristics seem to be predominant based on the major element chemistry. In normative compositions, the Chonju granite is petrographically evolved from granodiorite to granite, whereas the Sunchang granite is from granodiorite to quartz monzodiorite. It seems to suggest a difference of the magmatic evolution processes such as crustal assimilation and/or fractional crystallization in magma. The REE patterns of both batholiths show high similarity and strongly fractionated REE distributions which show high $(Ce/Yb)_N$ ratios and little or no Eu anomalies. These REE patterns correspond broadly to those seen in the pre-Cretaceous granitoids of Korea. Apparently, the evidences obtained from the bulk compositions strongly suggest that the two foliated granitoids were formed by partial meltings of a relatively restricted and similar, may be common, source material which contains a continental crust component having an igneous composition, and have undergone a similar magmatic differentiation processes.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do using GIS and DTED data. The characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do are as follows; First, the height-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}580m$, and the average elevation of it is 124m. Volcanic and granite region is mainly appeared at high elevation-region. But, we can't find out outstanding difference of elevation, according to its geology. The second. the slope-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}52$ degree, and the average slope of it is 17.6 degree. The slope of volcanic and granite area is more steeper than any other region. But the results of analysis of the geology in Geojo-Do, don't show outstanding difference of the slope. The third, the area-rate of the aspect of Geoje-Do is almost same in all direction. And the area-rate of south-west direction is the highest. According to the geology of Geoje-Do, granite is distributed the most widely, and the area of volcanic and granite occupy 60% of entire island's area. According to analysis of influence of geology with elevation, geology has little relationship with elevation. According to analysis of geology and drainage network, streams are inclined to be developed well in Alluvium area. Drainage network is well developed throughout the entire island, except southeast area. The highest order of stream is 4 in 1:25,000 topographic map. The density of stream in Geoje-Do is very high, such as 1.6. The bifurcation-ratio of stream is also higher than 4 in all order. The length-ratio of stream is ranged from 1.24 to 3.25. According to the relationship between order and elevation. order is the greater, elevation is the lower. According to the relationship between order and slope, order is the greater, slope is the gentler. In this study, we use DTED Data, and compare it with topographic map data. According to the comparison, there is a little difference between DTED data and topographic map data. Therefore, to use DTED data in landform analysis, it is required coordinate matching process. This process is very important, and take very long time. Thus, if you use DTED in landform analysis, some processes are required. DTED data can be taken very easily, but its using is not simple. Because coordinate adjust is very hard work.

  • Recently, due to the expansion of urban infrastructure for the citizen convenience, the shield tunnel construction has increased considering the civil complaints minimization and construction stability. Most shield tunnels are designed based on the assumption of the undrained condition that underground water does not inflow, but they are operated in the field as drained tunnels with drainage facility to drain underground water. Therefore, the drained condition needs to be considered in the shield tunnel design. It is also necessary to consider the weathered granite soil that is widely distributed throughout the country and consequently is encountered in most of construction sites. In this paper, the model test which can control total stress and pore water pressure and simulate the underground tunnel located in the weathered granite soil below ground water level is conducted. Total stress, pore water pressure and an inflow water into an inner pipe were measured using the testing device. Test results showed that the total stress in a drained condition was lower than in an undrained condition because pore water pressure decreased in a drained condition and an inflow water into an inner pipe was proportional to the loading stress in a drained condition. As a result, if a drained condition is considered in the shield tunnel design, the more economical design can be expected because of the stress reduction of the lining.

  • The comprehensive tests on unsaturated weathered granite soils are carried out to obtain the soil-water characteristic curve that is the one of the essential requisites to study the unsaturated soil. The weathered granite soils were obtained at Palgong mountain in Daegu. The existing test results have been carried out without overburden pressures and volume changes. In this study, the volumetric pressure plate extractor is improved to consider two factors such as overburden pressure and volume change. The applied overburden pressures were 0, 25, 50, 75, 100kPa and volume changes were measured at each phase. he results of this study are summarized as follows: As the overburden pressure increases, the volumetric water content decreases at the same matric suction and the air entry value increases and gradient of curve at the transition zone and the size of the hysteresis loops decreases. As the overburden pressure increases, the degree of saturation increases at the same matric suction and degree of saturation of the wetting curve is higher than that of dry curve. The SWCC with volume changes are slightly larger than those without volume changes. The general equation proposed by Fredlund & Xing(1994) to fit the experimental result of the SWCC indicates good agreement. The empirical parameters a, n, m as overburden pressure show similar inclination as the existing results.

  • We have carried out a series of numerical experiments to study the effect of average particle size on the mechanical properties of granite-derived weathered soils. A distinct-element method was adopted to study the changes in macro-scale mechanical properties with particle size and maximum-to-minimum particle size ratio. The numerical soil specimen with cohesion values of 0.25 MPa and internal friction angle of 29 degrees was prepared for reference. While keeping the porosity values constant, we varied particle size and size distribution to study how cohesion and internal friction angle changes. The experimental results show that the values of cohesion apparently decrease with increasing particle size. Changes in the values of internal friction angles are small, but there is a trend of increase in internal friction angle as the average particle size increases. This study demonstrates a possibility that the results of numerical experiments of this type may be used for rapid estimation of mechanical properties of granite-derived weathered soils. For example, when mechanical properties obtained through in situ tests and particle size data obtained through lab analysis are available for a site, it is expected that the mechanical properties of weathered granite soils with varying degrees of weathering (thus, varying particle size) may be estimated rapidly only with particle size data for that site.

  • In this paper, we investigate the geochemical and isotope properties of the Jeongeup foliated granite (hereafter, the JFG) in the Jeongeup area, aiming at establishing the movement age of the Honam shear zone by U-Pb sphene geochronology. In the AMF diagram, the JFG corresponds to the calc alkalic rock series, and belongs to the magnesia region in the diagram of silica versus $FeO^{total}/(FeO^{total}+MgO)$. Additionally, in the Rb-Ba-Sr diagram, it is classified as granodiorite and anomalous granite with distinctive negative Eu-anomaly in the REE patterns. According to the silica and trace element contents, the JFG falls on the type VAG+syn-COLG, which implies that this was formed under the circumstance of compressional continental margin or volcanic arc. $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$ isotope ratios range from 0.511495 to 0.511783 and $T_{DM}$ are calculated to be about $1.68{\sim}2.36Ga$. U-Pb sphene ages of the JFG are $172.9{\pm}1.7Ma$ and $170.7{\pm}2.8Ma$, based on $^{238}U-^{206}Pb$ and $^{235}U-^{207}Pb$ ages, respectively. Presumably, the dextral ductile shearing in the Jeongeup area has occurred after 173 Ma.

  • The study looked into the type and characteristics of debris landforms in Mt. Mudeung. By focusing on the representative area, we aimed to categorize the debris landforms based on the morphologic and genetic characteristcis. The types of debris areas in Mt. Mudeung can be divided into the exposed debris type, mixed type of matrix, and the boulder-hidden type. Supply of block in the debris slope area displays different features depending on types of rocks. For the stony slopes of andesite, the block must be moved from the columnar joint or cliff in the upper part. The andesite debris slopes display dominant edge shape while displaying no round shape. The granite stony slopes display dominant round shape and the present exposed slope was assumed to be formed as the core stone which was deep weathered moved along slope during the periglacial era and the matrix was removed after post-glacial era. The movements of blocks are assumed to be caused by solifluction process. The joint area where granite and andesite areas meet, granite is located beneath andesite area, and this implies that blocks were actively freezing and creeping by solifluction and freezing and thawing at that time. It can be assumes that the granite matrix formed plain slope and then andesite boulder covered up the slope. Currently, the blocks in the stony slopes of Mt. Mudeung shows almost no mobility and the stony slopes created under periglacial climate can be considered to be fossil landform.
