  • Since 1990s, increasing number of public arts have been installed in housing projects in Korea. Most of them were made of granite, bronze and stainless steel and were sculptures as well. Then it resulted in monotony. New technology and community need various Dials in material and genre of Public art. The author wonders if people really want granite sculpture, so started the study of public arts in housing projects. Unfortunately most of people related public art wanted granite sculpture. But there were some hope in survey. They wanted the other genre and material like ceramic wall, art fountain and landmark tower. This means that they care about real world like vandalism and Product Liability, but also want more fantastic and beautiful world in the second step. Recently, the facades of apartments are changing rapidly as more diverse materials in their forms, textures, and colors. And landscape designs are changing their clothes in every second as well. According to these flows public arts in apartments needs more diversified trial within genres and materials to avoid monotonous outdoor.

  • The soil samples used in this study were prepared with the residual granite soils passed through the #4 sieve and obtained from Pocheon in Gyeonggi-Ki do. Specifically, five types of samples were prepared. Sample A which is a natural state soil was classified as SM according to the uses. Samples of B, C, D, and E were prepared by mixing Sample A with bentonite and were classified as SC according to the uses. The plasticity indexes of samples B, C, D, and E were 15, 25, 30, and 40, respectively. The specimens, whose dimensions are 100mm by 127.5mm, were prepared by A method of ASTM D 698 with the Proctor mold. In experiments, the loading with the 1%/min was applied. Four different disk diameters, 13mm, 26mm, 38mm, and 52mm were used in the Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) tests. To compare the tensile strengths, the split tensile tests were also conducted on the same specimens used for the IUP tests. To find out the effects of moisture contents, plasticity Index of specimens on the tensile strength, six different water contents were used for making a specimen.

  • Site investigation including boring and various in-situ borehole test (Pressuremeter test, Borehole shear test, Downhole test, Suspension PS logging, Density logging) and X-ray fluorescence analysis for rock core sample were performed to estimate geotechnical properties and weathering degree of weathered granite rock in Goyang. Deformation modulus, shear strength parameter and shear wave velocity estimated through in-situ borehole test had a tendency to increase with depth. And several chemical weathering indices evaluated by X-ray fluorescence analysis had a general tendency of reducing weathering degree in accordance with depth. Also, relationship between VR determined as a representative weathering index and the geotechnical properties was analyzed.

  • We report an Early Cretaceous zircon U-Pb age ($113.9{\pm}1.2Ma$) for the Heuksan-do granite located about 90km from Mokpo offcoast of the southwestern Korean peninsula. At this Aptian/Albian boundary, widespread igneous activities occurred not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the eastern China and Japan. We raise the possibility that the flat-slab subduction and delamination triggered such an episodic igneous activity over the large areas of East Asia.

  • The three-dimensional strength behavior of compacted decomposed granite soil was studied using cubical triaxial tests with independent control of the three principal stresses. All specimens were loaded under conditions of principal stress direction fixed and aligned with the directions of compacted plane. For comparable test conditions, the major principal strain and volume strain to failure were smallest when the major principal stress acted perpendicular to the compacted plane. The opposite extremes were obtained when the major principal stress acted parallel to the compacted plane. In cubical triaxial tests with same b values and with ${\theta}$ values in one of three sectors of the octahedral plane, independent of the range of ${\theta}$, higher friction angles are obtained in tests with b greater than in triaxial compression tests in which b 0.0, Comparison between the results of the drained cubical triaxial tests on lksan compacted decomposed granite soil and the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface as well as the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface were made. Lade's isotropic failure criterion based on vertical specimens overestimates the strengths for tests performed with values of 0 between 90˚ and 1 50˚ the Mohr-Coulomb criterion generally underestimates the strengths of tests performed with values of ${\theta}$ between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ except around the $120^{\circ}$.

  • The feasibility of using waste lime, which is produced as a byproduct during the manufacture of sodium carbonate in Inchon, Korea. as a stabilization admixture with weathered granite soil was investigated. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the chemical composition, pH, compaction characteristics, unconfined compression strength. X-ray diffraction analysis of waste lime and weathered granite soil admixtures. Based on the present tests, it appears that the admixtures are environmentally safe and can be used as landfill material.

  • Since various weathered soils are encountered in many domestic construction sites, it is necessary to estimate characteristics of natural weathered soils. However, the remolded sample of weathered soils are commonly used to estimate their characteristics because it is very difficult to sample weathered soils in undisturbed states. However, it is well known that the behavior of remolded sample is different from that of the undisturbed sample particularly in the dynamic response, because the particle structure of undisturbed sample maintains its original structure from the mother rock. Thus, to evaluate the influence of sampling method and preparation method on stress-strain behavior, the resonant column tests were performed on the block, tube samples, remolded samples with static compression and remolded samples with tamping of the weathered granite soils. The shear modulus of the remolded sample with tamping is larger than the other samples presumably due to the high tamping pressure enough to induce particle breakage. The tube samples show larger damping ratios than other samples. Furthermore, one-dimensional ground response analysis was performed to compare the results qualitatively.

  • This experimental study was devoted to investigate skin friction of H group piles with uplift loading conditions in granite soil under laboratory test. Model piles made of steel embedded in weathered granite soil were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2{\times}2,\;3{\times}3$), pile space(2D, 4D, 6D), and soil density($D_r=40%,\;80%$) were tested. The main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows. The series of tests found that ultimate uplift load and displacement for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases to $D_r=40%$ of soil density. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, bearing capacity for group piles was greater than for single pile. In the relative density of $D_r=40%$, the theoretical value of skin friction for group piles was greater than practical value. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, both theoretical and practical value of skin friction for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of forced temperature change cycles on physical and mechanical properties of sand and weathered granite soil. The effect of forced temperature change cycles on the particle arrangement and the thermal conductivity was first investigated. A series of triaxial compression tests on the soils were also performed to look into the effect of temperature change cycles on the stress-strain-strength behavior.

  • In order to clarify the relation between the physical properties and the strength parameters of compaction materials and to develop a method for evaluating the strength parameters required for design from the physical indices including void ratio and dry density, compaction test, one-dimensional compression test, and exhausted-drained triaxial compression test were carried out with decomposed granite soils. The test results showed that the specimens became over-consolidated by compaction and the increase of the strength parameters of the specimens by the increase of the compaction energy could be verified quantitatively. A method for the evaluation of strength parameters from the void ratio of soil after compaction using preconsolidation theory which evaluates over-consolidation of materials was developed and its engineering applicability was tested for verification.
