  • To examine the moisture adsorption and permeability characteristics, weathered granite soils of different degrees of weathering, cultivated upland soils and sands of Han-river were sampled. The results are as follows: 1. In case that the mother rock was same, the pF values under same moisture content decreased according as the grain size of soil became finer by the weathering process. 2. In case that the mother rock was different, the pF value varied by the behavior of clay minerals, and the cultivated upland soils showed more sensitive reaction than sands and fresh granite soils. 3. The pF value changed by the difference of primary moisture content and also influenced by soil structure, testing method and etc. 4. The pF value and compaction curve had close relation, however under same moisture content, the pF value decreased by the increment of density. 5. The permeability depend on the available void ratio between the soil particles according to the degree of weathering, and the pF value of available void water between the soil particles which related directly to permeability was about 3.3 except the void water holded in the soil particles. 6. As the above, the pF value and permeability were differentiated by degree of weathering, primary moisture content, density and etc. Therefore it is considered unreasonable to define uniformly by soil texture.

  • This paper studies the leaching behaviors of pyrochlore-rich synroc incorporated 46.8wt% simulated actinides waste under the five simulated geological disposal media, which included the bentonite, granite, granite + ferroferric oxide, granite + cement, bentonite + ferroferric oxide, respectively. The mass loss rates reached to equilibrium after 182 day and was 10-7 g/$\textrm{mm}^2{\cdot}d$. That suggests the mass loss rate of pyrochlore-rich synroc, loaded 46.8wt% actinides waste, was very low. The surfaces of the leached specimens were analyzed by XRD, SEM/EDS. The experimental results show that the pyrochlore-rich synroc samples in the systems, which contained bentonite and cement, have two new phases formed on the leached specimens surface at $90^{\circ}C$ for 728d; The bentonite and cement can retard the elements leaching; $Fe_3O_4$ can speed the elements leaching; Expect for Ti ion depleted on the sample surface, other ion, such as U, Zr, AI, Ca, were in equable states and Ba ion was enriched during test time, which indicated the simulated disposal media have good ability to retard the leaching behavior of the pyrochlore-rich synroc.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effectiveness of soil cement stabilization about the Song-I in Cheju province. The results are summarized as follows; 1.The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength according to the increment of cement content was markedly low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the effect of stabilization was low. 2.The moisture content of the sample of Song-I indicates the maximum unconfined compressive strength showed at the 5% or so of dry side than the optimum moisture content and the change of the unconfined compressive strength according to the change of moisture content was not sensitive compared with the weathered granite soil. 3.Generally the primary strength of curing age within 7 days of the sulfate resisting cement was low compared with the normal portland cement and the strength of 28 curing days showed a similar tendency, especially in case of Song-I, and it seemed that the sulfate resisting cement was a little more effective than the normal portland cement. 4.As the unconfined compressive strength of grain size controlled Song-I was low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the rate of weight loss by the durability test was great, therefore it was thought that the durability was weak.

  • In this research program special triaxial compression tests and dehydration-swelling tests under the condition of freeze-thaw process were conducted to show the effects of freezethaw process on the physical properties of weathered granite soil, and their results as follows; 1.Consolidation settlement of weathered granite soil mass was increased due to freeze-thaw process, and the initial tangent coefficient of dense state was higher than that of loose state. 2.Compression behaviour of soil was increased according to the decrease of freezing temperature, and when the freezing temperature was reached under - 10$^{\circ}$C, the compression rate was not influenced by change of freezing temperature. 3.The experiments showed that the void ratio and permeability of soil were converged into their values of shrinkage limit, and the permeability was higher due to the freeze-thaw process and as the lower the freezing temperature. 4.The decrease of liquid limit was indicated as the lower the freezing temperature, and as more the freeze4haw cycles, the moisture content was shown the lower side. 5.It was shown that the shrinkage was decreased by freeze-thaw process and not influenced by way of freezing temperature, but dehydration rate was higher.

  • A lot of landslides were occurred in Gangnung, Macheon and Geochang areas by Typhoons such as RUSA(2002) and MEAMI(2003). Soil properties of these areas are investigated regarding geological conditions in this study. The shallow plane failure were occurred in Gangnung and Geochang areas, whereas the deep circle failure were occurred in Macheon area. The matrix in Gangnung and Geochang areas was composed of Granite, and the matrix in Macheon area was composed of Gabbro. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled in these areas. As the results of laboratory tests using sampled soils, the coefficient of permeability in Granite region is lower than that in Gabbro region. In the cases that the silt and clay contents are included less than 4% for the soils of Granite region and less than 7% for the soils of Gabbro region, the coefficients of permeability are rapidly increased for both soils. In addition, the simple equations for predicting the coefficients of permeability are proposed using the effective particle size and the silt and clay contents according to geological condition.

  • It is observed that calcareous nodules of the Hwajeol Formation are locally skarnized in the Sangdong district, in which the skarn mineralization extends 5 Km westward from the Sangdong mine area to the Hwajeolchi area. After a hidden granite beneath the Sangdong mine was discovered by exploration drillings, the exploration teams of the Sangdong mine and the Korean Mining Promotion Corporation have assumed that the skarn nodule of the Hwajeol Formation was derived from emplacement of a granite in deep place and the occurrence of hidden ore bodies below the skarn, and they have discovered high grades of tungsten orebody in the same horizon of the Sangdong ore body. Mutual genetic relatioships between epidote and garnet may be explained by following chemical reactions $Ca_2FeA_{12}$ $Si_3O_{12}(OH)+CaCO_3=Ca_3(Fe,\;Al)_2$ $SiO_{12}+1/2CO_2+1/2H^+Ca_3FeSi_3O_{12}+SiO_2+CO_2=2CaFeSi_{12}O_6+CaCO_3+1/2O_3$. It is concluded that epidote and garnet are useful as target minerals indicating a potential occurrence of deep seated hidden ore body. Since the epidote may inform the emplacement of the granite, while the garnet in the skarn nodule of the Hwajeol Formation may reflect a strong hydrothermal mineralization taking place from the depth.

  • For proper sampling of a rock and preparation of specimens, the representative elementary volume (REV) should be determined in rock mechanical test and numerical analysis. Mechanical properties of a rock, in general, would be strongly affected by mineral composition. In this reason REV of Youngju granite is determined by using stereoscopic microscope observation and homogenization numerical analysis. As the area of analysis model exceeds approximately 702 $ extrm{mm}^2$(900 elements), the change of the mineral composition is not observed. The calculated results indicate that Young's modulus is fluctuated with increase of the number of elements in homogenization numerical analysis mesh. However, as the number of elements exceeds 1156 (area of about 900 $ extrm{mm}^2$), Young's modulus does not change apparently.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of cyclic wetting-drying on the compressive strength characteristics of decomposed granite soils. A series of plane strain compression (PSC) tests were performed on test specimens with varying fine contents under different wetting-drying cycles to investigate the change in compressive strength under the process of wetting-drying cycles. The effect of wetting-drying cycles on the structural particle rearrangement at a micro-scale level was also examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests. It was shown that the soil containing larger fines showed more significant decrease in compressive strength compared with the soils with less fines. Also found was that the wetting-drying cycle did not have significant effect on the particle arrangement.

  • Four road tunnels, which consists of biotite gneiss and granite gneiss and shows a similar geological conditions, were selected in this study. Laboratory and field tests, the rock mass rating for the four tunnels were conducted. A regression analysis was performed to find out the correlations of test results. It was proposed an equation of reduction factor which can assess the deformation modulus for biotite gneiss and granite gneiss. It was also found that there was a close correlation between Q and RQD in four tunnels according to the analysis between RMR and Q, RMR and RQD, Q and RQD and laboratory and field tests.

  • The pick cutter, which directly contacts and crushes the rock, is the expendable part of a roadheader. The arrangement and angle of attachment of the pick cutter are important factors that determine excavator performance. It is necessary to numerically calculate the contact between the pick cutter and rock. The rock is defined as a set of particles using the discrete element method. The parallel bond model is used to define the bonds between particles. The properties of granite that are measured by the uniaxial compressive test are applied to the numerical rock model. The pick cutter is defined by the polygon elements. The linear cutting simulation is considered to simulate the contact between the pick cutter and rock. The results of the simulation show the rock breaking due to contact with the pick cutter.
