  • Rn-222 was used as a natural radioactive isotope tracer to evaluate non-aqueous phase liquid(NAPL) contaminated soil and aquifer. In the case of soil sample, Rn-222 concentration was inversely decreased with diesel concentration in the granite soil sample and it was decreased about 30% at the 13% diesel contaminated soil. For evaluating trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated aquifer, the natural radioisotope Rn-222 was used as naturally occurring partitioning tracer for the approximate localization and semiquantitative assessment of the TCE source zone. Rn-222 was analyzed for the estimation of TCE contamination ranges of the acquifer in the contaminated site at Wonju in Korea.

  • Baehuryeong tunnel connects Chuncheon with Hwacheon in Kangwon, Korea, This tunnel is a single tunnel with 5,057 m long and two bidirectional lanes which will be extended into low lanes in the future. The estimated construction period of Baehuryeong tunnel is approximately 55 months. This tunnel will become the longest bidirectional roadway tunnel in Korea. Compared to a twin tunnel, a bidirectional single tunnel has two major disadvantages with regard to the ventilation system and ease of escape during fire. For these reasons, a service tunnel and the transverse ventilation system are planned first time in Korea. In case of fire, the tunnel ventilation design aims to maintain a smoke free layer for passenger evacuation. The geology of Baehuryeong tunnel site is mainly composed of gneiss and granite. Baehuryeong fault is a mainly large scale fault which stands vertical and parallels with tunnel direction. The influenced zone of this fault is within 70 m. Baehuryeong tunnel was designed that it was separated with the distance of more than 100 m from Baehuryeong fault for its safety.

  • The objective of this present study is to understand long term(500 years) thermohydromechanical interaction behavior in the vicinity of a repository cavern on the joint location and repository depth variations. The model includes a saturated discontinuous granitic rock mass, PWR spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister surrounded with compacted bentonite inside a deposition hole, and mixed bentonite backfilled in the rest of the space within a repository cavern. It is assumed that two joint sets exist within the model. Joint set 1 includes joints of 56$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m, and joint set 2 is in the perpendicular direction to joint set 1 and includes joints of 34$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m. In order to understand the behavior change on the joint location variations, 5 different models of 500m in depth are analyzed, and additional 3 different models of 1000 m in depth are analyzed to understand the effect of depth variation.

  • Predicting and measuring tunnel convergence is very crucial for estimating tunnel stability and economical construction of NATM tunnels. The method to estimate the tunnel convergence that occurs before and after construction is proposed based on literature reviews. The total displacement occurring related to tunnel construction is determined to be about 2.5 times that of measured displacements. The results of displacement measurements at two tunnels constructed with similar rock types are examined for the investigation of factors affecting the tunnel convergence. The average convergence of Gyungju A Tunnel is about 6.7 times bigger than that of Daejeon B Tunnel. The possible causes of the large convergence in Gyungju A Tunnel are suggested. In order to predict the convergence of tunnels, careful investigation of the geological structures in the ground surface and the influence of external conditions as well as careful face mapping of the tunnel face should be conducted.

  • In order to obtain the dynamic response behavior of the rock subjected to blasting loading, a shock-proof high sensitivity impact sensor which can measure high frequency dynamic force and strain events should be adopted. Because the impact sensors which uses quartz and piezoelectric element are costly, generally the strain measurement-based impact (SMI) sensors are applied to high speed loading devices. In this study, dynamic Brazilian tension tests of granitic rocks was conducted using the Nonex Rock Cracker (NRC) reaction driven-high speed loading device which adopts SMI sensors. The dynamic response of the granite specimens were monitored and the intermediate strain rate dependency of Brazilian tensile strengths was discussed.

  • Three study areas of Kwanak campus(Seoul National University), Gapyung and Boeun were selected and classified according to bedrock types in order to investigate soil-gas radon concentrations. Several soil-gas samples showed relatively high radon concentrations in the residual soils which derived from granite bedrock. It also showed that water content of soil and the degree of radioactivity disequilibrium was a secondary factor governing radon emanation and distribution of radon radioactivity. The results of radon concentrations and working levels for forty rooms in Kwanak campus, Seoul National University, showed that indoor basement rooms under poor ventilation condition can be classified as high radon risk zone having more than EPA guideline(4 pCi/L). Some results of section analysis which was surveyed in the fault zone of Kyungju and Gapyung area confirmed the existence of fault-associated radon anomalies with a meaning of radon risk zone.

  • The Gagok mine is a contact metasomatic deposit, located at Gagok-myeon, Samcheok city and Cheoram-dong, Taebaek city, Gangwon province. The deposit lies within the limestone of Myobong and Pungchon formations, and exists the contact of intrusive granite porphyry. In order to determine the direction and extension of mineralization in the gallery and around the entrance of the ore deposit, we used the ground magnetic survey, the direct current (dc) resistivity survey using dipole-dipole array, and resistivity tomography survey. The ground magnetic survey did not detect the anomalous zone due to ore deposit, while the dc resistivity survey and resistivity tomography survey were successful in delineating the anomalous zone related to the extension of fault toward $N50^{\circ}W$.

  • This study was performed to analyze test results on drying shrinkage for concrete specimens mixed with various constituents in concrete mixes. Test variables are coarse aggregate types(Limestone, Sandstone, Granite, Andesite, Gneiss), fine aggregate types(natural sand, crushed sand) and cement amounts(normal strength, high strength). Epoxy coating of(U&V-H(A,B)) was applied onto the specimen surface to simulate diverse volume surface ratios(22.2, 40, 85.7, 150, 200, 300) with different specimen sizes. The experiments had been executed during 1,014 days at a condition of $20^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 60% in environmental chambers. Test results showed that shrinkage strain from the specimen equivalent to real pavement decreased to 39% compared to the standard specimen recommended by KS. Test results also showed that shrinkage strain of the specimen mixed with Limestone was 56~76% of that with Sandstone, thus Limestone mix seems to be suitable to the concrete pavement.

  • A total of 247 samples were collected from groundwater being used for drinking-water supply, and hydrogeochemistry and radionuclide analysis were performed. In-situ analysis of groundwaters resulted in ranges of $13.7{\sim}25.1^{\circ}C$ for temperature, 5.9~8.5 for pH, 33~591 mV for Eh, $66{\sim}820{\mu}S/cm$ for EC, and 0.2~9.4 mg/L for DO. Major cation and anion concentrations of groundwaters were in ranges of 0.5~227.6 for Na, 1.0~279.3 for Ca, 0.0~9.3 for K, 0.1~100.1 for Mg, 0.0~3.3 for F, 0.9~779.1 for Cl, 0.3~120.4 for $SO_4$, 0.0~27.4 for $NO_3$-N, and 6~372 mg/L for $HCO_3$. Uranium-238 and radon-222 concentrations were detected in ranges of N.D-$131.1{\mu}g/L$ and 18-15,953 pCi/L, respectively. In case of some groundwaters exceeding USEPA MCL level ($30{\mu}g/L$) for uranium concentration, their pH ranged from 6.8 to 8.0 and Eh showed a relatively low value(86~199 mV) compared to other areas. Most groundwaters belonged to Ca-(Na)-$HCO_3$ type, and groundwaters of metamorphic rock exhibited the highest concentration of Na, Mg, Ca, Cl, $NO_3$-N, U, and those of plutonic rock showed the highest concentration of $HCO_3$, and Rn. Uranium and fluoride from granite areas did not show any correlation. However, uranium and bicarbonate displayed a positive relation of some areas in plutonic rocks($R^2$=0.3896).

  • This study was focused on the transducer and suitable contact material for stone cultural heritage, and the correlation of direct-indirect method in rock types for scientific development and quantitative evaluation technique of the ultrasonic measurements. As a result, it was identified the transducer (UTREXTX(RX)54kHz) and contact material (rubber clay) of the type 3 were appropriate for the ultrasonic measurements of stone cultural heritage. The direct-indirect correction factors of type 3 were calculated 1.50 for granite, 1.38 for gabbro, 1.58 for quartz diorite, respectively. This result is the first study for improvement in reliability for the ultrasonic measurements, and it will contribute to establishment of the ultrasonic survey method for stone cultural heritage. Also, complementary studies considering the surface irregularity of rocks and various contact materials will carry out, and the database about correlation of direct-indirect in rock types will establish.
