  • We introduce a new acoustic parameter for the classification of seafloor sediments from chirp sonar acoustic profiling data. The acoustic parameter is defined as a derivative of the unwrapped phase of the Fourier transform of acoustic profiling data. Consequently, it represents the characteristics of attenuation by dissipative dispersion in sediments. And we estimated acoustic properties by geoacoustic modeling using Chirp data obtained from the different sedimentary facies. Our classification results, when compared with the results of analysis of sampled sediments, show that the acoustic parameter discriminates sedimentary facies and bottom hardness. Thus the method in this paper is expected to be an effective means of geoacoustic modeling of the seafloor.

  • A field experiment generating shear waves by trench method was conducted at two places in Taejun area. We were able to separate the P- and S-waves by summing and subtracting the vertical and horizontal component of the data recorded at a three component downhole geophone in the borehole. The analysis of the records revealed that the shear waves were polarized to NS and EW directions. The faster shear waves were polarized to NS direction. The NS direction generally agrees with the dominant joints direction observed from the cores collected from the borehole.

  • The free-surface boundary conditions are persistent problem in elastic wave equation modeling by finite-difference method, which can be summarized with the degradation of the accuracy of the solution and limited stability range in Poisson's ratio. In this paper, we propose the mid-point averaging scheme as an alternative way of implementing the free-surface boundary conditions, and present the solution to Lamb's problem to verify our approach.

  • Measurements in two adjacent (about 1.5 m separation) boreholes reveal that there is a significant degree of variations in the width and property (permeability) of shear zones in the granitic rock. A high frequency (>10 kHz) cross-well seismic tomography was conducted to characterize the features of permeability distribution at the shear zones in the inter-well region. At the shear zones, the correlation between the permeability at the well location and the velocity pattern shown in the cross-well velocity tomogram suggests that a high resolution velocity tomogram may provide useful information for the shear zone characteristics, such as permeability, fracture density, width, and length.

  • In this study, vertical electrical sounding (VES) data and ordinary kriging are used to identify the alluvial depth of each area that Korea Resources Corporation (KORES) conducted groundwater survey at Miryang area in Gyeongsangnam-do and Pocheon area in Gyeonggi-do from 2003 to 2004. To verify the applicability of VES data to ordianry kriging, regression analysis of VES data versus drillhole data is conducted. Comparing the alluvial depth distributions using ordinary kriging with existing drillhole data, the result shows that the depth distributions are reasonably depicted along with the topography and the basin. So, the ordinary kriging of VES data is useful to identify the alluvial depth distributions.

  • In this study, we derive closed-form expressions of magnetic gradient tensor due to a circular cylinder. Because the expression for magnetic field has been derived in a previously conducted study, expressions are developed for the magnetic gradient tensor based on the derivatives of the expressions of magnetic field with respect to the variables of the Cartesian coordinates. Furthermore, expressions are derived for the magnetic gradient tensor based on the relations between the Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates in the derivative because the expression for magnetic field contains variables of cylindrical coordinates owing to its axial symmetry.

  • Headwaters initiate material export to downstream environments. A nested headwater study examined the flux of dissolved constituents and water from a perennial stream and four ephemeral/intermittent streams in the Upper Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Water was collected during storm and baseflow conditions. Multiple linear regression was used to model constituent concentration and calculate flux. Event was the major source of water discharged from the ephemeral and intermittent streams however, baseflow was the major source for water discharged by the perennial stream during events. The perennial stream had an area weighted average yields of 10.1, 0.01, 1.03, 0.65 kg/ha/yr of DON (dissolved organic nitrogen), $NO_3^-$-N, $NH_4^+$-N and $PO_4^{-3}$, respectively while large variabilities existed between the ephemeral and intermittent streams. These findings highlight the importance of headwaters in protecting the low order drainage basins as a key to water quality within perennial streams.

  • A three dimensional model for the orebody of an operating mine in Korea was constructed by using a program called '3-D Modeler'. The program allows the user to interactively construct a 3-D model of an orebody from its horizontal cross-sections. The 3-D Modeler is easily able to combine and display various spatial data for model construction. The result of modeling is strongly influenced by control points that correlate to the adjacent horizontal cross-sections. The control points are determined by comparing the geometrical shape of the adjacent cross-sections in conjunction with the geological features of the orebody. The resulting model can be evaluated in viewing the constructed object in three dimensional space or more closely evaluated by inspecting the cross-section. The model can iteratively be improved by modifying the shape of the cross-section and by using this new cross-section for the model building.

  • The finite element method combined with the sensitivity method is adopted for 2-dimensionl Fourier transform inversion. To improve the efficiency of inversion calculation, multi-resolution wavelet method is proposed., Theoretical data which is obtained from above method is shown to examine the proposed method. Theoretical model assumes that underground cavity is located in limestone area. In theoretical model, 16 current and potential electrodes are located to get theoretical data. It is shown that the about inversion method is very exact and useful calculation method, in case the larger model is very small such as under ground cavity.

  • An analytical forward modeling algorithm was developed for the efficient application to the geotechnical engineering in SASW (Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves) method. for the theoretical dispersion curve, the finite difference method using motion stress vector, which was proposed by Aki and Richards, was employed and verified with two earth models. For the stable and fast calculation, it was found that the model size depending on the frequency range is suitable $1.5\~2$ times bigger than the wavelength.
