Five core sediments acquired from the Lake Shihwa are analyzed for variations of sedimentary environment and heavy metal pollution after the Shihwa seawall construction. The depositional environment of the study area is divided into anoxic, oxic and mixed suboxic conditions based on the C/N ratio and C/S ratios of organic matters. Controlling factors for redox condition are the water depth and the difference in industrial effluents supply. Correlations among geochemical elements (Mn, U, Mo) show a distinctive difference and thus can be used as an indicator of redox condition. The content of Al, Ti are dependent on the sediment characteristics, and the contents of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) indicate heavy metal pollution. The concentrations of heavy metals are higher near Shiswa-Banwol industrial complexies than the central part of Lake Shihwa. Especially, the accumulation of the heavy metal at the surface sediments near Shihwa-Banwol industrial complex are two to eight times higher than in the center of Lake Shihwa.

The southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, Korea developed mud deposits as a belt in the inner shelf area from Pusan to Pohang. The general surface sediments consist of very poorly to poorly sorted muddy sediment. The differences of physical, geological and geomorphic conditions in the study area may control and produce distinctive foraminiferal populations. To establish a baseline of environment for the muddy sediments in the southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, 17 stations were sampled and proved to contain 45 species of living benthic foraminifera. Analysis of the foraminiferal populations in cluster analysis recognized to five habitat zones. These habitat zones contain distinctive cooccurrences of the entire occurring species. Foraminiferal community composition appeared to be closely interrelated of water masses, depths, nutrients and sediment characters.
The geologic structure of the Yongil Bay was studied in detail based on high resolution seismic profiles. The seafloor trends NE to SW with a deeper part off the Kuryong Peninsula. The seafloor is rather smooth due to the Quaternary fluvial deposits in the lower part and muddy sediments in the upper part. The seafloor off Umockri is very irregular due to erosion where Tertiary sedimentary rocks crop out. The underlying basement rocks were strongly deformed with faults and folds. High-angled reverse faults mostly trend N-S and NNW-SSE and are indicative of westward thrusting. Normal faults in NW-SE and WNW-ESE directions occur locally. Large folding structures trend NE-SW nearshore area of Umockri. The geologic structure suggests that the bay was subject to compressional stress regimes trending E-W and/or NW-SE prior to the early Late Miocene.
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system has a profound impact on geoinformatics. The laser mapping system is now recognized as being a viable system to produce the digital surface model rapidly and efficiently. Indeed the number of its applications and users has grown at a surprising rate in recent years. Interest is now focused on the reconstruction of buildings in urban areas from LiDAR data. Although with present technology objects can be extracted and reconstructed automatically using LiDAR data, the quality issue of the results is still major concern in terms of geometric accuracy. It would be enormously beneficial to the geoinformatics industry if geometrically accurate modeling of topographic surface including man-made objects could be produced automatically. The objectives of this study are to reconstruct buildings using airborne LiDAR data and to evaluate accuracy of the result. In these regards, firstly systematic errors involved with ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) system are introduced. Secondly, the overall LiDAR data quality was estimated based on the ground check points, then classifying the laser points was performed. In this study, buildings were reconstructed from the classified as building laser point clouds. The most likely planar surfaces were estimated by the least-square method using the laser points classified as being planes. Intersecting lines of the planes were then computed and these were defined as the building boundaries. Finally, quality of the reconstructed building was evaluated.
Acquisition and processing of vector seismic waves were conducted through simultaneous generation of P, SH, and SV waves and receiving those waves using three-component geophones. Test data were received by 24 8-Hz geophones at an interval of 2 m along a 94-m profile. The data were recorded for 512 ms with sampling intervals of 0.2 ms. Raw data indicate that both reflected and refracted P waves are strongly recorded on the vertical component while SH waves are significant on the transverse horizontal component. On the inline horizontal component, both direct P and converted PS waves are recorded. First arrivals of P and SH waves were detected simultaneously on the vertical and transverse horizontal axes, respectively. The recorded vector data were separately inverted using traveltime tomography to yield P- and SH-wave sections. Using those two velocity sections, Poisson's ratios were able to be obtained effectively.
Recently satellite SAR techniques have become essential observation tools for various ocean phenomena such as wind, wave, and current. The CMOD4 and CMOD-IFR2 models are used to calculate the magnitude of wind at SAR resolution with no directional information. Combination of the wave-SAR spectrum analysis and the inter-look cross-spectra techniques provides amplitude and direction of the ocean wave over a square-km sized imagette, The Doppler shift measurement of SAR image yields surface speed of the ocean current along the radar looking direction, again at imagette resolution. In this paper we report the development of a SAR Ocean processor(SOP) incorporating all of these techniques. We have applied the SOP to several RADARSAT-1 images of the coast of Korean peninsula and compared the results with oceanographic data, which showed reliability of spaceborne SAR-based oceanographic research.
The resistivity method has been used to image the electrical properties of the subsurface. Especially, this method has become suitable for monitoring since data could be rapidly and automatically acquired. In this study, we developed a time-lapse inversion algorithm for the interpretation of resistivity monitoring data. The developed inversion algorithm imposes a big penalty on the model parameter with small change, while a minimal penalty on the model parameter with large change compared to the reference model. Through the numerical experiments, we can ensure that the time-lapse inversion result shows more accurate and focused image where model parameters have changed. Also, applying the timelapse inversion method to the leakage detection of an embankment dam, we can confirm that there are three major leakage zones, but they have not changed over time.
Small-loop EM techniques have been used in many geophysical investigations, including shallow engineering and environmental surveys. Even though geometric and frequency soundings have been widely used, there is a debate regarding the effectiveness of frequency sounding, especially when the coil spacing is small. In this study, we analyzed the effectiveness of geometric as well as frequency soundings via the one-dimensional modeling of small-loop EM surveys. The numerical results reveal that geometric sounding can effectively provide underground information. Conversely, the frequency soundings are only effective when the loop spacing is relatively large, that is, when the induction number is large. On the contrary, the frequency soundings fail to provide any information concerning the subsurface layers if the loop spacing is not large.
Bio-grouting based on microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is recently emerging as a novel and environmentally friendly technique for improvement of coarse-grained ground. To date, the mechanical behaviour of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different calcite contents and grain sizes still remains poorly understood. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the influence of calcite content on the mechanical properties of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different grain sizes. This is achieved through an integrated study of uniaxial loading experiments of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil, 3D digitization of the grains in conjunction with discrete element modelling (DEM). In the DEM model, aggregates were represented by clump logic based on the 3D morphology digitization of the typical coarse-grained aggregates while the CaCO3 was represented by small-sized bonded particle model. The computed stress-strain relations and failure patterns of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil were validated against the measured results. Both experimental and numerical investigation suggest that aggregate sizes and calcite content significantly influence the mechanical behaviour of bio-cemented aggregates. The strength of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil increases linearly with calcite content, but decreases non-linearly with the increasing particle size for all calcite contents. The experimental-based DEM approach developed in this study also offers an optional avenue for the exploring of micro-mechanisms contributing to the mechanical response of bio-grouted coarse-grained soils.

A series of model borehole experiments and analyses for density compensation were performed to achieve the effective density correction of gamma-gamma log obtained from PVC cased boreholes. A follow-up survey was made for clarifying the variation property of detector responses depending on casing types, the presence of borehole fluid, and the degree of separation between probe and borehole wall. A special emphasis was placed on the comparison of gamma responses obtained from above and below ground water tables. Finally, we could quantify the detector responses as a function of separation between the probe and borehole wall, construct standoff compensation charts, and the limitations of the compensation have been discussed for the environments of both above and below ground water tables.
