We surveyed 848 university students, $21.4{\pm}2.5$ years of age, attending university in Seoul, Kongju, Chongyang-Gun in the Chungnam province of Korea, for their use of health functional foods (HFF) and for significant variables in this use, namely demographic characteristics, health related variables, dietary variables and nutritional beliefs. The prevalence of the use of HFF was 33.6%. Among all types of HFF, nutritional supplements were taken most frequently, followed by (in order) red ginseng products, apricot extract products and ginseng products. HFF use was higher in females (p<.05), in subjects living in a dormitory (p<.05) and those from families with a relative high socioeconomic status (p<.001). Self-health concern (p<.05) and usage ratio of HFF by family (p<.001) was higher in users than in nonusers of HFF. The total score of dietary assessment was higher in users than in nonusers of HFF (p<.001), and users had a more positive point of view concerning the potential health benefits of HFF than did nonusers (p<.001). Most users took HFF when they were healthy (37.2%) or when they were sick (27.4%). They did not feel special effects through the HFF use (49.8%). Most users got the information about the specifics of HFF from family and/or relatives (55.8%). Most of users confirmed nutrition facts when they purchased the HFF (70.9%), but a considerable number of users could not understand these nutrition facts (48.1%). Users preferred vitamin C- and Ca-supplements most among vitamin mineral supplements belonged to HFF. These results show that the use of HFF is common among university students. As well, the use of HFF by students is affected by various variables. Supplementary nutritional education should be undertaken among university students, in order to give them a reasonable guideline for the use of HFF, based upon influencing factors and usage behaviors that we learned from this survey.
This paper aims to provide quite recent information on the organic industry in the U.S. Major focuses are on the development of cultivation and marketing of fresh and processed organic produce and foods, newly enforced certification program, consumers' purchasing behaviors toward organic foods, and social survey results administered to the organic farmers in the U.S. The U.S. recorded 8 billion dollars' sale of organic foods in 2000, which was the largest in the world and showed 23% growth compared to the previous year. Yet the organic industry is still a niche market, occupying merely 1.5% of total food sale amount. The natural foods markets have not been so concentrated in the U.S., but it is changing and a few wholesale mart such as Whole Foods is emerging. Recent introduction of new certification program provide unified and sole standard at the federal level to which every certifier needs to adjust itself in order to be acceredited by the government. According to a social survey, consumers purchase organic foods because they concern about health, they stick to their own modes of life favoring natural foods, and so on. Another social survey shows that most organic farmers sell their produces to wholesalers, distributers, or producer coop, and direct sale to visitors at their own farm comprises of about 8 percent of their organic land.

Formalin, 37% formaldehyde, has been employed as a chemical for controlling ectoparasites and aquatic fungi responsible for infectious fish of diseases in hatcheries and culture facilities (Roberts, 1978; Schnick, 1991; Rach et al., 1997). Regarding the commercial usage of formaldehyde in the aquaculture industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three commercial products as parasiticides in a species-specific manner: Paracide-F and Formalin-F for bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, salmon, and trout and Parasite-S for all finfish (FDA, 1998). Withdrawal time for these products was legally zero when used as permitted under the regulations. With the increased production of cultured fish in Korea, such as olive Hounder Paralichthys olivaceus and black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, application of formalin to diseased fish has become more frequent. Moreover, there is still some concern about environmental exposures caused by effluents from fish culture facilities. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate residues in fish resulting from therapeutic usage of formalin in the aquaculture industry and to document the rate of disappearance of formaldehyde in seawater treated with formalin. Typical lebvels of heavy metal exposure for humans may be attributed to four components in the environment ; food, inhaled air, various types of dust, and drinking water. To assess the health risk of lead, it is necessary to estimate the blood lead levels in the populations of concern under various air lead concentrations. The blood lead levels of the population in Seoul and Yeoju are estimated by Biokinetic model for the risk assessment in this study. The differences in blood lead levels between areas of different land use are not dominant but some differences show among different age groups and sex. Blood lead levels of the population show log normal distribution. The geometric standard deviation values of blood lead levels are in the range of 1.25 ~ 1.39, it is somewhat smaller than the values in the general U.S pollution which are determined to be from 1.31 to 1.41 by the U.S. EPA.

This study examined the differences on the amount of purchase of and willingness-to-pay more for organic products by socio-economic variables, knowledge and reliability of organic products, and concern for food. In addition the effects of the reliability and the price of organic products on the amount of purchase and willingness-to-pay more for organic products in the Path analysis. The results were below. First, consumers who had high education, were the age of 40's, high income, high level of knowledge and reliability for organic products were more likely to purchase organic products. Second, the level of willingness-to-pay more for organic Products were high when consumers with more than three children, not lowest level of health, and higher reliability. Third, the reliability of organic products impact the amount of purchase of organic products, but not the perception of organic products' price. Forth, both the reliability and the perception of those price impact the level of willingness-to-pay more for organic products.

People can't be free from the panic of flood, war and terrorism which could be fatal for people's life and property in modern society. It is the most important thing that provide food and residence for suffers in disaster areas. When disaster occurred, the emergency public facilities would be the first place that the people stay. However, these also could be destroyed by disaster. In that case, emergency tents or containers could be the major residence for disaster suffers. Because the only concern for planning temporary residence is the matter of supply and efficiency, it is no longer useful after the disaster end. Therefore, temporary residence as well as general residence should be on the basis of social and cultural factors as well as basic and physiological factors. It is very crucial to study the model of temporary residence. It could be the fundamental and necessary for the human being in order to prepare the natural disaster and grand scale accident. The main purpose for this study is examining the temporary residence that satisfy the fundamental, social and cultural factors for disaster sufferers.

The chlorinated dioxins and furans have attracted considerable scientific and public concern because of their environmental persistence and super-toxicity through the foodchain. Recent dioxin scandals in several military bases have also contributed to a higher awareness on the side of food consumers as well as foodwaste combustion. However, there is continuing uncertainty over the relative importance of different sources of dioxins and furans to the soil environment. In difference to those awareness there is a main influence of potential soil contamination on the dioxin contents in groundwater. It is, therefore, important to provide a sound scientific framework and basis by which to evaluate the significance of the presence of dioxin in soils. Consequently, we have to identify the characteristics and nature of dioxin released into the soil environment, especially in agricultural aspect.

In this study, antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolated from domestic beef on sale in Busan and Gyeongnam province was investigated from March to October 2008. A total of 400 beef samples were collected for the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance, and 39 (9.8%) strains of E. coli were isolated. Antimicrobial resistance test was carried out by agar disc diffusion method with 17 antimicrobials. In general, E. coli isolates showed the highest antimicrobial resistance to tetracycline (85.3%), followed by doxycycline (76.5%), streptomycin (61.8%) and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (61.8%). Then they showed higher resistance to several antimicrobials like kanamycin and neomycin (55.9%). However, They had low antimicrobial resistance to amikacin (8.8%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (2.9%). Of 39 isolates, 31 (79.5%) were resistant to more than 2 antimicrobials. Among 17 antimicrobials examined, tetracyclines were the most resistant, followed by aminoglycosides, sulfonamides. The resistance was seemed to be correlated to amounts of antimicrobial use. In the result of this study, we suggest that there be need to regulate the abuse of antimicrobial on food-producing animals in Korea because the concern on antimicrobial resistant is gradually increased worldwide.
The forest conditions of North Korea has been a great concern since it was known to be closely related to many environmental problems of the disastrous flooding, soil erosion, and food shortage. To assess the long-term changes of forest area as well as the canopy conditions, several sources of multitemporal satellite data were applied to the study area near Kaesung. KOMPSAT-1 EOC data were overlaid with 1981 topographic map showing the boundaries of forest to assess the deforestation area. Delineation of the cleared forest was performed by both visual interpretation and unsupervised classification. For analyzing the change of forest canopy condition, multiple scenes of Landsat and SPOT data were selected. After preprocessing of the multitemporal satellite data, such as image registration and normalization, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was derived as a representation of forest canopy conditions. Although the panchromatic EOC data had radiometric limitation to classify diverse cover types, they can be effectively used t detect and delineate the deforested area. The results showed that a large portion of forest land has been cleared for the urban and agricultural uses during the last twenty years. It was also found that the canopy condition of remaining forests has not been improved for the last twenty years. It was also found that the canopy condition of remaining forests has not been improved for the last twenty years. Possible causes of the deforestation and the temporal pattern of canopy conditions are discussed.

With desires for safe food, there is growing concern that pesticide spray drift will expose people, plants, and the environment to pesticide residue and potential negative effects thereof. For highly efficient, safe spray application, technologies for measuring the spray drift should be developed and improved with some urgency. This study investigated the applicability of two optical particle counters (OPCs), which are mostly used to measure airborne particle mass concentration, for measurement of airborne pesticide spray drift. Experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory and an ash tree orchard to evaluate the handiness and accuracy of two OPCs, OPC 1 and OPC 2. The experimental results indicated that the OPC 1 was better applicable to the measurement of spray drift in the field while the use of the OPC 2 was limited due to its narrow range of measurable droplet sizes. The readings of the OPC 1 produced highly accurate results ($R^2=0.9637$) compared to the actual spray drift. For better application of OPCs, this study suggests the OPCs should be positioned properly to inhale spray droplets of the appropriate size and concentration.
