Eating Habit and Stress Status according to Exercising Habits of Middle-Aged Adults in Chungnam (충남 일부 중년 성인의 운동습관에 따른 식습관 및 스트레스 상태)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the health concern, eating habits, dietary behavior, and psychological stress among middle-aged adults in Chungnam according to their exercise status. A total of 437 adults with a mean age of 42.6 years participated in this study and completed a questionnaire survey. The subjects were divided into one of three groups according to their exercise status: never doing exercise (NDE; n=144), doing exercise once a week (DEO; n=186), and doing exercise twice a week or more (DET; n=107). Results demonstrated significant differences in concern about health, subjective health status, meal regularity, dietary problems, and stress score among the three groups. The DET and DEO groups were more concerned about their health (p<0.001), and had a perception that their health status was better than that of the NDE group (p<0.01). A larger percentage of the DET group had breakfast everyday (p<0.05) and a smaller percentage of the DET group had dietary problems such as irregular mealtime and skipping meals (p<0.01), compared to the other groups. The average stress score of the DET group was significantly lower than that of the DEO and NDE groups (p<0.05). The results reveal that doing regular exercising at least twice a week is associated with higher health concern, more desirable dietary habits, and lower psychological stress in middle-aged adults. These findings support the beneficial effects of regular exercise for health, dietary habits, and stress control.

A Study on Customer Attitude and Effort towards Reducing Food Waste When Dining Out (소비자의 외식관련 음식물 쓰레기에 대한 태도 및 감소 노력에 관한 연구)

  • As food waste problems become more severe, the need for reduction plans is increasing. Thus, this study aimed to discover the attitudes towards and the intentions to reduce restaurant food waste as well as the importance of and intentions to participate in reduction plans among adults customers A self-administrated questionnaire was given to 361 adults (216 men and 145 women) over 20 years old residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. According to the results, the respondents regarded restaurant food waste problems as serious (4.01). The biggest reason for leaving food was concern about hygiene (3.57), followed by tasting food (3.34) and portions that were too large (3.10). 57.6% responded that they try to reduce food waste when dining out. Women over 30 admitted to leaving food when dining out if the food did not taste as expected, if they had health concerns about additives such as condiments, and for body weight management. The overall average degree of awareness on the gravity of restaurant food waste problems was 4.06, indicating that respondents deeply empathized with the matter. Women showed higher alertness compared to men, and respondents in their 30s or over did more than those in their 20s. Also, respondents who try to reduce food waste when dining out had higher levels of concern than those who did not. According to the results from measuring the importance of and intention to participate in restaurant food waste reduction plans, taking away left-over food was the best option. In short, citizenship improvement campaigns should be designed for restaurants and related organizations in order to stimulate the need and effects of efforts to reduce dine-out food waste and induce aggressive participation by consumers. Diverse methods to increase actual consumer participation in food waste reduction plans that show high consumer participation intentions also needs to be developed.

Study on Skipping Breakfast in Adolescents Classified by Household Type (가구 유형별 청소년의 아침식사 행태 분석)

  • This study investigated the situation of eating meals to identify factors influencing skipping breakfast and types of foods consumed for breakfast among adolescents classified by household type. Adolescents were found to consume mainly homemade meals for breakfast and dinner while consuming institutional foodservice at school for lunch. Percentage of skipping meals among adolescents was different by time of meals, and they skipped meals due to lack of time, which was different according to household type. Main food for breakfast was rice, and percentage of skipping breakfast was the highest in single parent households. Satisfaction of food-related life was lowest in grandparent households. Especially, satisfaction was highest if they had rice for breakfast. For influencing factors on skipping breakfast, social support, eating regularly, concern for origin, and single parent household were found to be significant. For influencing factors on types of foods consumed for breakfast, eating regularly, exercise, satisfaction of food-related life, and concern for food safety among adolescents were found to be significant. If adolescents in grandparent households had rice, they were less likely to skip breakfast.

A Study on the Perception of and Concern for Food Safety among Urban Housewives (대도시 주부들의 식품안전에 대한 인식 및 우려도에 관한 연구)

  • We investigated consumer perception of and concern for food safety. The subjects of this study were 275 urban housewives aged more than 20years. The results showed that vegetables and fruit showed the highest purchase frequency of 29.2%, and meat was the highest with 17.2% in the food which feel concerned about safety. Respondents observed that 'domestic food was safer than imported food' (3.92 on a 5 point scale) and 'I always feel concerned about food safety' (3.37). The study also showed that respondents were aware of environmental hormones (3.57), natural toxins (3.51), mad cow disease (3.48), and avian influenza (3.43), in that order. Finally, respondents were deeply concerned about mad cow disease (4.43), heavy metals in food (4.05), environmental hormones (4.02), food poisoning bacteria (3.96), avian influenza (3.87), agrichemical residues (3.86), and food additives (3.84), in that order.

The relationship between oral health concern and the purchase behavior of environmental friendly agricultural products (구강건강관심도와 친환경농산물 구매 행위와의 관련성)

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the level of oral health concern and the purchase behavior of environmental friendly agricultural products and to determine the relationship between oral health concern and the purchase behavior of environmental friendly agricultural products. Methods : The subjects were 99 male(29.7%) and 234 female(70.3%), who were over 20 years with mean age of 39.6 years. The data was collected using personal interviews and a self administrated questionnaire from August 1 to September 30, 2008. Oral health concern was measured using the 7-items, and the purchase behavior of environmental friendly agricultural products was measured using the 7-items. The data were analysed with t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple logistic regression using the SPSS 15.0 windows. Results : Regarding oral health concern, the subjects was a mean of 2.86 out of a maximum 5 points. There were differences in the level of oral health concern according to the purchase behavior of environmental friendly agricultural products(experience, period, frequency, price, weight). Conclusions : These results suggest that the strategies of habitual use environmental friendly agricultural products to put in practice oral health promoting behavior is needed to improve quality of life in people.

The Consumption Behavior and Perceptions of Environment-friendly Agricultural Products by University Students in Korea (전북 지역 대학생의 친환경 농산물 구매 실태 및 인식에 대한 연구)

  • The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the consumption behavior and perceptions of environment-friendly agricultural products(EAPs) by university students in the Chonbuk area, Korea. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 309 university students(male 33.0%, female 67.0%). Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses was completed using SPSS v. 12.0. The percentage of subjects who purchased EAPs was 70.9%. Of those, 87.2% had EAPs purchased by their mothers. The most purchased EAPs were vegetables, the primary reason for which was the perception of 'good for health'(73.1%). The main information source about EAPs was 'familes/freinds'. The average scores of 'attitude toward EAPs', 'knowledge toward EAPs', 'concern toward EAPs' were $3.76{\pm}0.57$, $2.91{\pm}0.61$ and $3.29{\pm}0.43$, respectively. With regards to 'attitude toward EAPs', the scores were significantly affected by 'self-reported health status'(p<0.05). With regard to 'knowledge toward EAPs' and 'concern toward EAPs', the scores were significantly affected by 'supplements for health' (p<0.05; p<0.001). For university students' right choices of EAPs, information and consumer education wthin the university curriculum on these products are necessary.

Moderating Effect of Health Motivation, Health Concern and Food Involvement on the Relationship between Consumption Value and Purchasing Intentions of Healthy Functional Food (건강기능식품 소비가치와 구매의도의 관계에 대한 건강동기, 건강염려, 식품몰입의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of consumption value on healthy functional food choice. Also, this study explored the role of health motivation, health concern, and food involvement as a moderating variable in the relationship between consumption value and healthy functional food choice. A total of 281 responses were collected using on-site survey (response rate 96.0%) from college students in Daegu, Gyeoungbuk Province. The questionnaire contained questions on consumption value, health motivation, health concern, food involvement, and purchasing intention of healthy functional food. The respondents rated the items using a 5-point scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). According to the confirmatory factor analysis, item evaluating using factor loading resulted in the retention of 25 consumption value items loading on seven factors, four health motivation items loading one factor, six health concern items loading on one factor, and four food involvement items loading on one factor with an internal consistency. Results of stepwise regression found that social value-I, emotional, functional, epistemic, and conditional values among consumption value determined the purchasing intention of healthy functional food. Results of hierarchical regression showed that health concern had a positive effect on the relationship between social value-I and purchasing intention of healthy functional food.

Establishment of Acceptable Daily Intakes (ADIs) and Risk Assessment for Ephedrine, Menichlopholan, Anacolin, and Etisazole Hydrochloride

  • BACKGROUND: Prior to implementing a positive list system (PLS), there is a need to establish acceptable daily intake (ADI) and maximum residue limit (MRL) for veterinary drugs that have been approved a few decades ago in South Korea. On top of that, chronic dietary exposure assessment of veterinary drug residues should be performed to determine whether the use of these veterinary drugs would cause health concerns or not. METHODS AND RESULTS: To establish the ADI, the relevant toxicological data were collected from evaluation reports issued by international organizations. A slightly modified global estimate of chronic dietary exposure (GECDE) model was employed in the exposure assessment owing to the limited residual data. Therefore, only the ADI of ephedrine was established due to insufficient data for the other veterinary drugs. Thus, instead of ADI, the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) value was used for the other drugs. Lastly, the hazard index (HI) was calculated, except for etizazole hydrochloride, due to the potential of mutagenicity. CONCLUSION(S): The HI values of ephedrine, menichlopholan, and anacolin were found to be as high as 6.4%, suggesting that chronic dietary exposure to the residues from these uses was unlikely to be a public health concern. Further research for exposure assessment of veterinary drug residues should be performed using up-todate Korean national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES) food consumption data. In addition, all relevant available data sources should be utilized for identifying the potentials of toxicity.

A Study on the Satisfaction for Food Service with School Food Service Center of Elementary and Middle School Parents in Chungnam (충남 지역 학부모의 학교급식지원센터를 통한 학교급식 만족도에 대한 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate the satisfactions with school food service for elementary and middle school parents. We surveyed parents about their concerns regarding food materials, the perception of free school food service, improvement of free school food service and satisfaction with the quality of school food service. The regions were classified into two categories according to the operation of a school food service center. The respondents with greater concern and cooperative purchase of food materials had higher satisfaction with the quality of school food service. It is interesting to note that school food service centers managed directly by the local government had higher satisfaction than those operated by private enterprises with respect to the quality of the school food service. The results of this study can contribute to the establishment of school food service and school food service center policies in the future.

A Survey on Perceived Food Safety in Urban Residents (일부 수도권 거주 주민의 식품 안전성에 대한 인식 조사)

  • A survey was conducted to investigate the relationship between knowledge of perceived food safety and actual food purchase practices among parents of children under the age of seven (N=309) in 2005. The seventeen following perceived food safety items were included in the survey (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot and mouth disease, pathogenic avian influenza, swine fever, allergens, GMO, irradiated food, food poisoning bacteria, endocrine disrupter, antibiotics, food additives, carcinogen, natural toxin, agrichemical residues, place of origin, cultivation methods, and heavy metal) Most parents were highly concerned about investigating all food safety topics. Up to 90.0% of the participants recognized the importance of food safety. The public concern has caused a considerable decline in the demand for food afterreceiving news about food safety through mass media, Also, the majority of subjects required correct food safety information.
