The Shaping and Communication of National Image by Korean Film and Television

  • Korean movies and TV shows have been widely distributed in the international market and have played an important role in shaping the national image of Korea. In this paper, we found that the factors of "actor's image" and "background music and images" among the popular factors of Korean dramas have a positive influence on shaping the national image of Korea through questionnaires and spss tools. At the same time, the study also hopes to analyze the reasons for the success of Korean film and television productions to explore their useful value for the international communication of Chinese film and television productions.

스마트TV를 이용한 공동주택의 에너지 사용 모니터링 시스템 (A Monitoring System of Energy Usage for Apartment Houses Using Smart TV)

  • This paper presents the necessary elements and data flow in developing a monitoring system of energy usage for apartment houses with a Smart TV. Energy consumption data in each home are collected and analyzed in the HUB station by way of measuring instruments. And the amount of energy usage, such as electricity, gas, hot water, heating, water and other utilities are displayed through the Smart TV application. Energy consumption Database in the HUB station are processed and displayed in the browser of a Smart TV through XML, JAVASCRIPT and Flash. Smart TV users can get the energy consumption status through the energy consumption analysis display of the Smart TV application and improve the energy efficiency by comparing the usage patterns with neighboring houses. And the application display energy usage information, consumption ranking, rates to user as well. Furthermore, usage of last month or year can be compared to help to reduce the energy usage. The proposed system can provide the information about the amount of energy use to be reduced and the warning on the waste of energy.

  • We have successfully commercialized a novel optical compensation film, OCB-WV film, for OCB-LCD-TVs which has fast response time and wide viewing angle. The OCB-WV film consists of a 45degree-aligned discotic layer and a high Rth biaxial TAC film, which is suited for a roll-to-roll polarizer manufacturing process. This OCB-WV has brought out the excellent features that OCB intrinsically has, making nextgeneration fast-response LCD-TVs possible and free from image blurring in conjunction with an impulsive driving scheme.

  • 본 연구자는 디지털 영상 연기 중 TV드라마와 영화 연기를 효율적으로 하기 위한 방법론 중 하나로 아메리칸 메소드(american method)를 제안하고자 한다. 아메리칸 메소드 훈련 방법 중 리 스트라스버그(Lee Strasberg, 1901-1982)의 정서적 기억은 디지털카메라 매체 연기를 하는데 있어서 제작 환경에서 오는 어려움들을 극복할 수 있는 효율적인 방법론이다. TV드라마와 영화의 제작 환경에서 발생하는 특성과 쇼트의 크기, 편집에서 오는 디지털카메라 매체의 독립적 의미 생성은 배우가 연기를 하는데 있어 간과할 수 없는 부분이다. 배우는 감정의 기억 훈련을 통해 디지털카메라의 매체적 특성에서 오는 어려움을 극복 할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 자신의 연기를 도와줄 수 있다.

  • 본 연구에서는 영상 극작물인 방송 드라마와 영화의 차이점을 통해서 콘텐츠 생산의 중핵인 방송드라마 극본과 영화의 시나리오의 특성을 알아보고 '갑'의 위치인 방송 드라마 작가와 '을'의 위치인 시나리오 작가의 위상과 현실의 권력구조를 비교 분석해 본다. 갈수록 심해지는 고비용 드라마 제작의 문제점과, 날로 어려워지는 시나리오 작가의 처우문제, 방송사와 영화계의 관행을 통해 영화와 드라마의 총체적 문제와 균형적 성장을 고찰해본다. 그리고 비교 점으로 할리우드와의 집필 차이점을 통해서 개선방향을 알아보고 앞으로 우리나라 영상산업이 발전해 나갈 수 있는 행태를 모색해 본다.

Web TV in Network TV: Digitextuality and Hybridization of Media Labor in My Little Television

  • The emergence of the new audiences floating across multimedia platforms and engaging in TV production and distribution have forced producers and broadcasters to think of not only the fragmented distribution of their content but also the development of a new format beyond the frame of traditional TV production. A Korean entertainment TV show My Little Television combining the form of live webcasting and traditional TV show reflects such a trend. Because of the distinct format, My Little Television carries out a unique strategy in managing the two screens - Internet and TV. The dualistic production requires all players to understand not only online subculture and communication styles and methods, but also implicit and explicit rules of traditional TV production. Through text and visual image analysis on the show, this study discusses how MLT negotiates with the original Internet text, the producers' paratext, and the supertext of the national TV network in the context of the transitory screen culture.

비선형 편집기반의 입체영상 제작 흐름에 관한 연구 (Stereoscopic Contents Production Workflow Based on Nonlinear Editing)

  • 디지털 마스터 배급 기반의 디지털시네마는 입체영화를 중심으로 발전하고 있다. 2004년에 발표된 Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)규격 1.0은 이미 입체영화 상영을 고려한 표준으로 발표되었다. 현재는 Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(SMPTE)에서 가정에서 상영되는 입체 콘텐츠 규격을 정의하기 위한 특별위원회가 구성되었다. 현재 헐리우드 중심의 상업용 입체 디지털시네마는 대부분 컴퓨터그래픽 기반의 애니메이션이 주류를 형성하고 있다. 그러나 영화적인 특성을 고려할 때 실사 영상을 획득, 편집후 상영하는 입체 디지털시네마 제작이 반드시 필요하다. 본 논문은 먼저 입체영상 제작흐름 중 NLE (non linear editing) 시스템에서 입체검안이 가능함을 증명한다. 그리고 입체 검안을 응용해 새로운 입체 디지털시네마 제작흐름을 제안하고자 한다. 실험결과 120Hz 기반의 3D Ready TV에서 콘텐츠 편집은 장애요소가 많았지만, Line Interleave방식의 모니터와 원평광 안경을 이용한 국산 입체모니터에서는 대부분 안정적인 편집이 가능하였다.

A Study on the Necessity for the Music Composition in TV Documentaries - Focusing on In-depth Interviews with Music Directors at KBS.

  • In this study, we investigated the necessity and limitations of music composition required in TV documentary by conducting in-depth interviews with 20 music directors currently working at Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). Our research has shown that composition of music is necessary. However, in reality, it is difficult to use the composed music due to problems such as time and cost of composing and trust in the music composer; so music libraries, film music, or other music are used instead of the composed music in many situations. However, at the time when companies like its rival Netflix are aware of the importance of sound, the impact of Netflix could lead to a decline in the quality of terrestrial TV, which could lead to a weakening of competitiveness. Recently, in the case of sound programs, the sales of secondary works are active due to "internet uploading using YouTube" or "exporting programs", but the sales have been hindered by restrictions on the use of copyrighted works. The music source of library is said to be the one whose copyright problem has been resolved. In this study, we show that the composed music is an ultimate alternative to TV documentaries, since the library music is sometimes suspended due to the situations of management companies.

TW(True Wide)-IPS for Improvement of Display Performance in large size TV application

  • Super In Plane Switching (S-IPS) technology is applied for large TFT-LCD panels used in TV applications. It has a lot of advantages in comparison to the alternative, VA technology. S-IPS shows excellent viewing angle properties and fast response time between intermediate gray levels. If the performance parameters which describe the actual visual performance are considered, S-IPS is much more advantageous.$^{1)}$ However, it shows relatively low contrast ratio in diagonal direction compared to viewing angle characteristic in upper/down direction in S-IPS. In order to compensate the relatively low diagonal contrast ratio, a newly designed optical film was applied and the truly wide view angle of a S-IPS TW(True Wide)-IPS) was achieved. Passive Transient Voltage Suppression Devices for 42-Volt Automotive Electrical Systems

  • New 42-volt automotive electrical systems can provide significant improvements in vehicle performance and fuel economy. It is crucial to provide protection against load dump and other overvoltage transients in 42-volt systems. While advanced active control techniques are generally considered capable of providing such protection, the use of passive transient voltage suppression (TVS) devices as a secondary or supplementary protection means can significantly improve design flexibility and reduce system costs. This paper examines the needs and options for passive TVS devices for 42-volt applications. The limitations of the commonly available automotive TVS devices, such as Zener diodes and metal oxide varistors (MOV), are analyzed and reviewed. A new TVS device concept, based on power MOSFET and thin-film polycrystalline silicon back-to-back diode technology, is proposed to provide a better control on the clamp voltage and meet the new 42-volt specification. Both experimental and modeling results are presented. Issues related to the temperature dependence and energy absorbing capability of the new TVS device are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the proposed TVS device provides a cost-effective solution for load dump protection in 42-volt systems.
