  • Korean funeral customs are an important part of the mourning process in Korea. A survey was conducted in the southern part by the Nak-dong river, centered around the city of Busan to examine Korean funeral rites. This study was conducted with survey research. The target population included 234 teachers and experienced the death of a family member within the last three years. Results showed that they presented their condolences 5 to 6 times on average per year. Funeral rites were performed usually at a hospital funeral hall. The preference of burial to cremation was about the same. According to the survey, funeral expenses averaged 9,570,000 won and donations received for funeral expenses, 12,630,000 won. Problems the respondents expressed about the process included large funeral expenses, the decision whether to bury or cremate, and fatigue from staying up all night. When classified according to the demographic characteristics, there were significant differences in the variables. Frequency of attending funerals depended on gender, age, and health status. Condolence style depended on religion. The type of funeral (burial or cremation) depended on family income. The type of reception depended on gender. Funeral expenses depended on the age Second, in the process of preparing for a family member's death, they thought it was important to prepare a funeral ceremony portrait of the deceased and a scroll by themselves, and the preparation

  • This paper reviews research on family communication in Korea. The 51 literatures which had been published till 1988 are used to review. The review includes brief summaries of literatures in methodological issues and research findings classified into five major domains ; theoretical understanding, communication in family relationship, relation to human development, family communication in home management, and the use of family communication in family therapy. Some of the major conclusions may be summarized as follows: 1) Family communication research has short history since it begun in 1973. 2) Research method used in almost the survey research. 3) It is difficult to generalize the research findings because of the short of research and the unexquisiteness of methodology, but is is possible somewhat to understand family communication in Korea.

  • This research was designed to illuminate that work domains and family domains are not separated but interacting spheres and to suggest efficient coping strategies than alleviate work/family role conflicts. The subjects of this study were 395 employed professional wives living in Seoul. Korea. Survey methods were questionnaires. Data analysis strategies were percentile, frequency, one-way-anova and multiple classification analysis. The results were as follows; 1)Employed wives experienced time-based conflicts and strain-based role conflicts. This finding supports the scarcity approach that multiple roles inevitably create strain. 2) Individual, family and work-related variables were predictors of work/family role conflicts. This findings indicate that work domains and family domains cannot be regraded as separated spheres. 3) Employed wives tried to meet all the given roles demands not by reducing role responsibilities, but by increasing the efficiency of role performance. This finding reflects the characteristics of employed wives who try to perform successfully all the responsibilities. 4)The negative correlation of coping strategies and work/family role conflicts suggests that strategies can function effectively in alleviating the work/family role conflicts.

The survey was done using questionnaires in 1999, and the subjects were 198 primary care-givers for senile dementia patients. Frequency distribution, mean, t-test, and one way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The major findings of this study were as follows: The family care-givers' perceptions of the welfare facility for elderly people with dementia was relatively low. The variables associated were sex, education level, occupation and relationship with the demented elderly. The conclusion suggested from this study was that the social welfare facilities and services were necessary for both the demented elderly people themselves and their family care-givers.

  • This study examined which factors influence educational expenditure by family life cycle. Data for this study were from the 2001 Household Income and Expenditure Survey and consisted of a sample of 2,681 households. The results showed that the households having high school students had the highest educational expenditure and the households having middle school students had the highest ratio of educational expenditure to consumption expenditure. The education of household head, family type, the number of children, the age of the youngest child, and family income had significant effect on educational expenditure in all the stages of family life cycle. The results of this study will be useful for financial management of households and give suggestions for the government policy on education.

The data for this study was got from the sample survey of 370 mothers who had children of education period living in Seoul and kyunggi-do. The major findings were summarized as follows: 1) Through item discrimination method 34 items of the total items showed a high index ranged from .29. to .77 of discrimination coefficient 2) Factor analytic procedures selected 29 items among 34 items and extracted 4 factors(Positive Fmaily Emotion Family Communication Participation in Family Event and Sharing Family Worries) These factors accounted for 93.03% of the total variance. 3) A multiple regression analysis conducted to reduce the number of items yielded 26 items for the Family Functioning Scale 4) Internal consistency reliability for this scale showed high internal consistency(Cronbach's a= .86)

  • This paper expands empirical research on family satisfaction by introducing the family APGAR scale, developed and validated in the field of nursing, to measure the satisfaction of business-owning families and applying the Stafford et al.(1999) model of sustainable family businesses to the assessment of family satisfaction. More specifically, this study compares the differences in the effects of business- and family-related variables on family satisfaction for the families of lifestyle business owners and earner business owners. The sample was drawn from the 1997 National Family Business Survey. The family satisfaction was greater for the families of lifestyle business owners, but the family variables made a greater contribution to the explanation of variance in the satisfaction of families of earner business owners. The regression equation explained a higher percentage of the variance for the families of earner business owners. Nine family variables were significant in the satisfaction equation for earner business owners, in contrast to seven significant family variables in the equation for lifestyle business owners. Structured families had a significant positive effect on the satisfaction of lifestyle business owners. The family manager's education, putting the family first rather than the business, and the family management score had significant effects on the satisfaction of earner business owners.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among the internal locus of control, perceived family support, family cohesion, family adaptability, and children's social behaviors. The subjects were 285 6th and 8th grade students and their homeroom teachers. A questionnaire was used as survey method. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post test. and multiple regression. The results are as follows: First, internal locus of control was positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Perceived family support, family cohesion and adaptability were positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Second, girls were higher internal locus of control, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and lower in antisocial behavior than boys. The 8th graders had lower scores than 6th graders in perceived family support, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and higher level of antisocial behavior. Third, perceived family support and family adaptability impacted social competence in girls, and grade impacted social competence in boys. Grade, perceived family support and locus of control had significant effects on the antisocial behavior in boys, and perceived family support impacted antisocial behavior in girls.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family mealtime and family functioning (family cohesion, family adaptability, and communication with father and mother) on early adolescent school adaptation. Data of 3,145 middle school students from the Survey on the Family Values and Lives among Adolescents(2010) conducted by National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI) were used. The findings are as follows. First, there were significant differences in the frequency of having breakfast and dinner with father and having breakfast with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father according to gender. Second, hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that household economic status, mother's employment status and adolescents' gender among demographic characteristics, having breakfast with father and having dinner with mother in family mealtime frequency, and all the variables of family functioning predicted adolescents' school adaptation. Finally, economic status, having dinner with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father and mother were associated with adolescents' school adaptation for both boys and girls. Mother's education and having breakfast with father were found to be significant for only boys, while mother's employment status and family adaptability were found to be significant for only girls. These findings could provide grounds for making family and education policy.
