The characteristics of distribution of dissolved oxygen off the east coast of Korea were studied. The oxygen minimum layer was not clearly appeared on the vertical distribution of dissolved oxygen through the year. The dissolved oxygen content of the proper cold water of Japan Sea was 5.1-6.0ml/l which is very higher than those of the North Pacific region, and it means that the speed of transportation of a new and oxygen rich water from surface to deeper layer is relatively fast. Water masses in east coast of Korea can be classified by using of O$\_$2/-Salinity relations.
The east coast of Kangwon province has been suffering from natural disaster like wildfire and flooding. In April 2000, there has been a great wildfire in this area. Many forest was burnt out, the mountain was bared. Furthermore, on 31st August,2002 typhoon RUSA attacked the area with heavy rainfall of about 315 mm/day, which resulted in 178 deaths and extensive damage to the property, In this regard, our study was focused on the assessment of the factors of flooding damage considering wildfire disaster. Most of results for our study are derived from practical investigation in the east coast of Kangwon province.

Based on the Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) observation and serial oceanographic observation of National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) during July 2013 to July 2015, we examined the temperature variation in the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) in the East Sea. The UWE was always shown during the observation periods even though it was not the whole shape. The coefficient of variation (CV) was largest in the depth of 250 m at the side of the east coast of Korean Peninsula with $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ in temperature. CV of the horizontal distribution at 250 m depth was also largest in the region biased along the east coast of Korea. The warm eddy moved not only to the east-west direction but also to the north-south direction in the viewpoint of horizontal distributions of temperature. This region between the Korean Peninsula and Ulleung island also is the passage of the East Korean Warm Current. This means that interaction between the East Korean Warm Current and periphery of warm eddy makes large in the variation of movement along the east coast of Korean Peninsula. The largest variation of temperature at 250 m depth seemed to be significantly correlated with the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) underlying Ulleung Warm Eddy. It is suggested that the interaction between the ESIW and UWE is active in the mid-depth along the periphery of UWE.

The cold eddies around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea were identified from satellite altimeter sea level data using the Winding-Angle method from 1993 to 2015. Among the cold eddies, the Dokdo Cold Eddies (DCEs), which were formed at the first meandering trough of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and were pinched off to the southwest from the eastward flow, were classified and their migration patterns were analyzed. The vertical structures of water temperature, salinity, and flow velocity near the DCE center were also examined using numerical simulation and observation data provided by the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model and the National Institute of Fisheries Science, respectively. A total of 112 DCEs were generated for 23 years. Of these, 39 DCEs migrated westward and arrived off the east coast of Korea. The average travel distance was 250.9 km, the average lifespan was 93 days, and the average travel speed was 3.5 cm/s. The other 73 DCEs had moved to the east or had hovered around the generated location until they disappeared. At 50-100 m depth under the DCE, water temperature and salinity (T < $5^{\circ}C$, S < 34.1) were lower than those of ambient water and isotherms made a dome shape. Current faster than 10 cm/s circulates counterclockwise from the surface to 300 m depth at 38 km away from the center of DCE. After the EKWC separates from the coast, it flows eastward and starts to meander near Ulleungdo. The first trough of the meander in the east of Ulleungdo is pushed deep into the southwest and forms a cold eddy (DCE), which is shed from the meander in the south of Ulleungdo. While a DCE moves westward, it circumvents the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) clockwise and follows U shape path toward the east coast of Korea. When the DCE arrives near the coast, the EKWC separates from the coast at the south of DCE and circumvents the DCE. As the DCE near the coast weakens and extinguishes about 30 days later after the arrival, the EKWC flows northward along the coast recovering its original path. The DCE steadily transports heat and salt from the north to the south, which helps to form a cold water region in the southwest of the Ulleung Basin and brings positive vorticity to change the separation latitude and path of the EKWC. Some of the DCEs moving to the west were merged into a coastal cold eddy to form a wide cold water region in the west of Ulleung Basin and to create a elongated anticlockwise circulation, which separated the UWE in the north from the EKWC in the south.

In this study, we develop an algorithm to predict swell-like high waves on the east coast of Korea using the directional wave gauge which was installed near Sokcho. Using the numerical wave model SWAN, we estimate wave data in open sea from the wave data collected by using the directional wave gauge. Then, using the wave ray method and SWAN model with the open-sea wave data as offshore boundary conditions, we predict the swell-like high waves at several major points on the east coast of Korea. We verify the prediction methods with the SWAN and wave ray methods by comparing predicted data against measured one at Wangdolcho. We can improve the prediction of the swell-like high waves in the east sea of Korea using both the real-time wave measurement system and the present prediction algorithm.
A numerical experiment is made in order to clarify the mechanism of the upwelling phenomenon along the coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. The possibility of the upwelling is suggested from the analysis of the observational data in the east of Honshu, Japan, and in the south eastern coast of Korean Peninsula. This upwelling phenomenon is very deep and can be traced to the bottom layer. The upwelling phenomenon seems to be a general oceanic feature which characterizes the region along the west coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. This experiment is simulating the oceanic condition of the transition region between Kuroshio front and the Oyashio front in the east of Honshu, Japan. The possible explanations of the causes of the upwelling are as follows; In the interior of the modeled ocean the cold heavy water supplied from the north and the warm light water from the south make the north-south gradient of the pressure field and accelerate the eastward current to produce the h-orizontal divergence feld near the west coast. The divergence is compensated by the upwelling near the separation region. Another one is that the upwell-ed cold water strengthen constantly the pressure gradient which is balanced by the northward current and is weakened by the horizontal diffusion.
Abnormally large swells that appeared on the coast of the East Sea in October in 2005 and 2006 were simulated using SWAN model to examine the accuracy of the model for future forecasting Seawind data calculated based on the weather chart ant bottom topography were used for input data, and the model was operated more than 20 days before the observed swells to avoid the problems from the cold start of the model. The comparisons with observed wind and wave data were unsatisfactory and neededmore improvement in terms of swell component in the wave model as well as the quality of seawind data. The satellite wind and wave data can be good candidates for future comparison of the wave model results in the East Sea.
Ocean currents estimated from sea height anomalies derived from inter-calibrated TP/ERS are compared with daily mean currents measured with satellite-tracked drifters. The correlation coefficient between the geostrophic current from TP/ERS and surface current at 15 m depth from drifter tracks was found to be about 0.5. Due to the limitation of satellite ground tracks, small scale eddies less than 80 km are poorly resolved from TP/ERS. One of the interesting results of this study is that coastal currents along the eastern coast of Korea were well reproduced from sea height anomalies when the coastal currents were developed in association with eddies near the South Korean coast. The eddy kinetic energy (EKE) estimated from drifters, TP/ERS, and a numerical model are also compared. The EKE estimated from drifters was about 22 % higher than EKE calculated from TP/ERS. The pattern of low EKE level in the northern basin and high EKE level in the southern East Sea is shown in the EKE estimates derived from both the drifters and TP/ERS.
Exacanthomysis marsailiae and Nipponomysis neolingvura are described as new species based on specimens collected with a light trap off the East Sea coast of Korea. E. marsailiae is closely related to Exacanthomysis alaskensis (Banner, 1954) and Exacanthomysis borealis (Banner, 1954). However, E. marsailiae can be distinguished from these species by having slightly grouped spines on lateral margins near the telson apex, and the exopod of male's fourth pleopod more than twice as long as the endopod. N. neolingvura can be distinguished from its closest relative, Nipponomysis lingvura (Murano, 1977), in that the lateral sides of the telson are all armed with spines without any empty space, and that the second segment of the fourth male pleopod is longer than the third one. The report of E. marsailiae from the East Sea of Korea extends the distribution range of the genus Exacanthomysis from the high-latitude North Pacific southward to the mid-latitude waters of the western Pacific. The morphological characteristics of the two current new species are also compared with those of their congeners.
In this paper, changes in the intensity (e.g., central pressure and maximum sustained wind speed) of Tropical Cyclone (TC) in summer in the regions located at $30^{\circ}N$ in East Asia from 1988 to 1991 were found. The intensity of TC from 1991 to 2007 was much higher than that of TC from 1965 to 1988. The reason for this was that the frequency of TCs passing China from 1991 to 2007 was much lower than that of TCs from 1965-1988 because a northeasterly wind caused by high-pressure circulation in East Asia got severer along the East Asian coast. Instead, TCs moved from the eastern region of the Tropical West Pacific to Korea and Japan mainly after passing the East China Sea due to the low-pressure circulation strengthened in the subtropical waters of East Asia. In addition, low Vertical Wind Shear (VWS) was created along the mid-latitude regions of East Asia and the main path of TCs from 1991 to 2007. Most of the regions in the Northwestern Pacific showed higher Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from 1991 to 2007, and had a good environment where TCs were able to maintain a higher intensity on the mid-latitude. In particular, a low sensible heat flux occurred due to high snow depth in East Asia in the spring of 1991 to 2007. Accordingly, the lower layer of East Asia showed high-pressure circulation, and the sea surrounding East Asia showed low-pressure circulation. Thus, the typical west-high, east-low pattern of winter atmospheric pressure was shown. The possibility of snowfall in East Asia in spring to be used as a factor for predicting the summer intensity of TC in the mid-latitude regions of East Asia was insinuated. The characteristics of TC in a low-latitude region were the same in Korea. The latest intensity of TCs got higher, and the landing location of TCs gradually changed from the west coast to the south coast.
