Fatigue Life Estimation of Solid-state Drive due to the Effect of Dummy Solder Ball under Forced Vibration (Solid-state drive 강제진동시 dummy solder ball 효과에 의한 피로수명 예측)

  • This research proposes a method to estimate the fatigue life of solid-state drive(SSD) due to the effect of dummy solder ball under forced vibration. Mechanical jig is developed to describe the SSD in laptop computer. The jig with SSD is mounted on a shaker, and excited by a sinusoidal sweep vibration within the narrow frequency band around the first resonant frequency until the SSD fails. A finite element model of SSD is also developed to simulate the forced vibration. It shows that the solder joints at the corners of controller package are most vulnerable components and that placing dummy solder balls at those area is effective method to increase fatigue life of SSD.

  • Purpose: To provide practical education, most universities should be equipped with medical appliances in need. As compensatory measures, Gimcheon College has produced in-house dummy linac and dummy accessories, we are going to report efficiency and its usage. Materials and Methods: Dummy linear accelerator (DLINAC-001) has the same mechanical functions as rotation of gantry and collimation in linear accelerator. In addition, to maximize practical education, we have produced and utilized in-house custom blocks, wedge filters, electron cones and head rests. Results: The in-house produced linear accelerator with the same mechanical functions as the linear accelerator, DLINAC-001 can be effectively used in practicing diverse medical instruments. Conclusion: We have produced dummy linear accelerators and dummy accessories and utilized them in practice classes, which can provide the students with clinical training in diverse fields. Consequently, the students exposed to the maximized educational effectiveness can be easily equipped with the practical competence required in real clinical fields.

  • As the automobile industry is developing, the number of deaths and injuries has increased. To reduce the damages from automobile accidents, the government of each country proposes experimental conditions for reproducing the accident and establishes the vehicle safety regulations. Automotive manufacturers are trying to make safer vehicles by satisfying the requirements. The Hybrid III crash test dummy is a standard Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) used for measuring the occupant's injuries in a frontal impact test. Since a real crash test using a vehicle is fairly expensive, a computer simulation using the Finite Element Method (F.E.M.) is widely used. Therefore, a detailed and robust F.E. dummy model is needed to acquire more accurate occupant injury data and behavior during the crash test. To achieve this goal, a detailed F.E. model of the Hybrid III 5th percentile female dummy is constructed by using the reverse engineering technique in this research. A modeling process is proposed to construct the F.E. model. The proposed modeling process starts from disassembling the physical dummy. Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometry data is constructed by three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of the disassembled physical dummy model. Based on the geometry data, finite elements of each part are generated. After mesh generation, each part is assembled with other parts using the joints and rigid connection elements. The developed F.E. model of dummy is simulated based on the FMVSS 572 validation regulations. The results of simulation are compared with the results of physical tests.

An Investigation on Fitting Dummies for the Making of Women's Clothing in their 50s~60s

  • This study investigated the usage and product conditions of clothing companies and online dummy companies for the development of fitting dummy for South Korean women's wear in their 50s and 60s. These women-targeted apparel companies mainly used nude-sized torso type and torso crotch type made of FRP material. The frequency of use of the dummies was high, while the user satisfaction was moderate. Users expressed dissatisfaction with the inaccurate reflection of the body shape according to the KS sizing system and the measurements such as the front and back intercye, upper arms, abdomen, crotch, and waist back length. Upon survey, 73.7% of the respondents answered that development of the dummy and the appropriate age for it is 50 to 54, and they preferred the torso crotch form. In the production of online dummy companies, the torso crotch type and torso type were most widely produced, and polyurethane, FRP, and recycled paper materials were used. The size of dummy was expressed in numerical type, and 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 were being produced. Even models of the same size had significant deviation, especially in the waist circumference. Also, there was no dummy reflecting 25%~75% center interval to the KS garment sizing standards of women in their 50s and 60s. Therefore, it is desperately necessary to develop a fitting dummy for KS clothing sizing system that reflect their body sizes and shapes.

  • We often need to include categorial variables as explanatory variables in regression models. The categorial variables in regression models can be quantified through dummy variables. In this study, we provide an education tool using Excel VBA for displaying regression lines along with test results for regression models with a continuous explanatory variable and one or two categorical explanatory variables. The regression lines with test results are provided step by step for the model(s) with interaction(s), the model(s) without interaction(s) but with dummy variables, and the model without dummy variable(s). With this tool, we can easily understand the meaning of dummy variables and interaction effect through graphics and further decide which model is more suited to the data on hand.

  • This paper presents an improved algorithm of optimal measurement system design with a reliability evaluation method for large power system. The proposed algorithm is developed to consider the dummy bus and to achieve highest accuracy of the state estimator as well with the limited Investment cost. The dummy bus in the power system is impossible to install measurement meter, while real and reactive power measurement values are exactly zero. Thus, the effect on these dummy bus measurements is considered in the proposed algorithm. On the other hand, P/C model is developed by taking advantage of the matrix sparsity. The improved program is successfully tested for KEPCO system with PSS/E lineflow calculated data package.

  • In this paper, the ride comfort from a computer simulation was compared to the experimental result. For measuring ride comfort of a passenger car, acceleration data was obtained from the floor and seat during highway running with different speeds. The measured acceleration components were multiplied by the proper weighting functions, and then summed together to calculate overall ride values. Testing several passenger cars, the ride comforts were compared. In order to investigate the effect of vibration signals on the steering wheel, an apparatus to measure the vibrations and weighting functions on the steering wheel were designed. The effect of the steering accelerations on the ride comfort were investigated and added for the overall ride comfort. For the computer simulations, Korean dummy models were developed based on the Hybrid III dummy models. For the Korean dummy scaling, the national anthropometric survey of Korean people was used. In order to compare and check the validity of the developed Korean dummy models, dynamic responses were compared to those of Hybrid III dummy models. The computer simulation using the MADYMO software was also compared to the experimental results.

  • 광산개발로 인한 지하수 유동체계 변형에 따른 주변환경 영향조사의 과정으로 충북 음성군 지역에서 야외 조사를 실시하였다. 조사 과정중 연구지역의 지하수계를 이해하고 개발에 따른 지하수 유동체계 변화를 예측하고자 수행된 모델링의 입력인자 산정을 위해 순간충격시험을 실시하였다. 순간충격시험을 통해 수리전도도, 투수량계수 그리고 저류계수를 산출하였다. 그리고 dummy의 주입과 회수시 다르게 나타나는 수리전도도값의 원인에 대해서도 고찰해 보았다.

  • A head-neck complex dummy, for measuring brain pressure and reaction force in the cervical spine was developed for experimental study related in injury mechanism. Dummy comprised aluminium-casted head with water filled cavity for simulating brain and mechanical neck assembled with six motion segments. Several kinds of experiments (compression, bending, cyclic modulus, relaxation and constant velocity profile) for the developed mechanical neck showed that this neck model is biomechanically reliable compared with in-vitro test results. As an application of developed head-neck complex dummy, shock absorbing properties of protective helmet was chosen. The experiments showed that the maximum pressure increment of brain after impact was tolerable compared with the guide line for mild brain injury pressure (25psi). Constrast to this results, the reaction force in the neck was high enough to produce failure in the cervical spine.

  • This research proposes a method to estimate the fatigue life of SSD(solid-state drive) due to the effect of dummy solder ball under forced vibration. A finite element model of the SSD was developed to simulate the forced vibration and a modal testing was performed to verify the developed finite element model. Fatigue life of the SSD under vibration was experimentally determined according to JEDEC standard in which the SSD was excited by a sinusoidal sweep vibration within the narrow frequency band around the first natural frequency until the SSD fails. Basquin's equation was introduced to estimate the fatigue life of the SSD due to the effect of dummy solder balls. It shows that the dummy solder balls are effective elements of the SSD to increase the fatigue life of an SSD by increasing 700 times of the fatigue life of the given SSD.
