  • Objective: Acne scarring is the most common sequela after dermal inflammation caused by acne. Many methods are currently used to treat acne scarring; doctors using traditional Korean medicine have also attempted to treat acne scarring in a new way that was developed from traditional methods. This study examines the effectiveness of re-cell therapy.Method: Eleven patients with various types of acne scars were treated by re-cell therapy. We used the global acne scarring classification (GASC) and ECCA (from the French “echelle d’evaluation clinique des cicatrices d’acne”), both of which are generally used to measure and grade the degree of acne scarring. Results: As a result of the treatment, the conditions of all patients were conspicuously improved in both scales. The GASC scores of the patients changed from grade 19.6±10.4 to grade 4.9±3.3 (p=0.001), and the ECCA scores changed from grade 120.9±28.7 to grade 41.8±18.3.Conclusion: Re-cell therapy showed effectiveness in treating acne scarring and could be applied in clinical cases.

  • Objective: This study reports on the effects of CheonPae-hwan among asthma patients.Method: This case study was conducted with two asthma patients who had visited a traditional Korean medicine clinic. CheonPae-hwan was prescribed to the two patients; we then evaluated the objective symptom changes through forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1). Dyspnea-subjective symptom change was evaluated with the visual analog scale (VAS).Results: In case 1, FVC increased from 2.24 to 2.55 after treatment, FEV1 increased from 1.86 to 1.99, and VAS decreased from 2 to 0. In case 2, FVC increased from 1.51 to 2.79 after treatment, FEV1 increased from 1.12 to 2.22, and VAS decreased from 8 to 5.Conclusion: CheonPae-hwan appeared to be effective for treating the two asthma patients in our study.

Sihochunggan-tang gagambang was prescribed to all four patients and evaluated the symptom change through photographs and two assessment methods. The assessment methods are Atopic Dermatitis Severity Index(ADSI) and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). ADSI was used to evaluate the objective symptom change and VAS was used to evaluate the subjective symptom change. Results & Conclusion: The ADSI and VAS were decreased compared to the first in all four patients in our study. And most symptoms of four patients were improved. As a result of examining ADSI, VAS scores and photographs, Sihochunggan-tang gagambang can be effective on the groin, inner thigh eczema in four cases in our study.

It was compared among age groups and severity of obesity. Results: It was achieved to loss 12-13 kg for 105.8 days thru obesity program of Korean medicine clinic. There were no significant differences for BMI loss, weight loss, body fat loss, muscle volume gain and treatment duration among age groups. It was found that there were significant differences among overweight, obesity and severe obesity group for BMI loss, weight loss, body fat loss and muscle volume gain except treatment duration. It was assumed the weight loss for 1 month was 3.2 kg, 4.2 kg, 4.5 kg for each severity group respectively. Conclusions: It was found herbal medicine treatment would be effective for female obesity and expected the patients could achieve 12-13 kg weight loss for 15 weeks treatment including 8-12 weeks herbal medicine administration and BMI loss per month could be 1.22 kg/m2, 1.60 kg/m2 and 1.70 kg/m2 for severity of obesity respectively. Hereafter, further controlled study with more numbers of patients should be needed to determine the goal of medical treatment for obesity.
