  • The Quality of municipal solid waste incineration ash (incineration ash) was analyzed for the purpose of the reusing for concrete material. The folwability and strength properties of concrete mixed with incinerator ash were investigated. CaO component was included more than 50% in chemical component of incinerator ash, mean size of 50% accumulated particle distribution of incinerator ash was about $25{\mu}m$. Particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_1$) was massed the round shape with fine particle, particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) was piled up the sheet shape according to manufacture procedure. The Quality of concrete was effected by use of incinerator ash. When the incinerator Ash ($IA_2$) was used, slum of concrete was increased and dosage of high range water reducing agent was reduced. However, strength development of concrete was decreased. Dosage of high range water reducing agent was increased by combined use of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) and diatomite powder, but strength development of concrete was improved. Ratio of compressive strength and tensile strength was in the range 85%~105% of CEB-FIP model code.

  • The design for horizontal drain layer on soft ground starts from the decision that the material could be used or not, by verifying material condition in permeability of horizontal drain material according to the weight percent of the dry soil retained on #200 sieve. In the next step of the design, we estimate the thickness of horizontal drain layer to confirm trafficability of heavy machinery in construction work. Successively, the long-term functionality for good drainage of horizontal drain layer is checked and if needed, some means are considered. In this study, the system to recycle mixed coal ash in ash pond successfully as a horizontal drain material on soft ground is presented through the process and the result of its practical construction work. Namely, the pact is confirmed that mixed coal ash in ash pond should be sorted out by sieve screen to a certain extent and the remainders of this mixed coal ash on sieve openings be recycled, because the amount of finer particles than $75{\mu}m$ contained in mixed coal ash in ash pond is quite massive and irregular depending on the coal power plant or the location in same ash pond. In order to sort at large scale in situ, the dimension of a sieve squre hole and the sort-out method, etc. should be decided before the sort-out process. And, it is described that we need to manufacture classifier to sort out mixed coal ash in ash pond, too.

  • This study made to find the variation of strengths of briquette ash which were hardened into cement. The briquette ash were mixed with the cement, ((cement (90%)+slaked lime (10%)) and ((cement (80%)+fly ash (20%)) in the ratio of 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:7 and 1:9, respectively, and these were compared with the one made of cement plus standard sand in the strengths of compression, tension and bending at the ages of 7 days and 28 days. The results from the study conducted preliminary without studying the economical aspects or duration of the products are summarized as follows: 1. The compressive strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 84%, 90% and 75% at the age of 7 days and 84.9%, 73.5% and 69.8%, respectively of those of Korean Standard values. 2. The compressive strength s of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 69.3%, 75.1% and 41.3% at the age of 7 days and 56.4%, 49%, and 46.5% at the age of 28 days, respectively of the mortar made of standard sand. 3. The tension strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash, and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 64.4%, 47.1% and 35.4% at the age of 7days and 69.6%, 64.8%, and 57.3%, respectively of that of the mort ar produced with standard sand. 4. The bending strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash, and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 46.3%, 65.9% and 39.1% at the age of 7 days and 89.9%, 96.7%, and 85.1%, respectively of that of mortar produced with standard sand. 5. The bending strength of the mortar was lower than that of cement mortar, when the briquette ash were harqened into cement. However, the mortar produced by such method seemed to be used as the secondary products of cement or concrete. The additional usefullness of the hardened biquette ash can be found in contributing toward the solving the various pollution problems, the saving the labor costs needed to clean-up waste materials, and the saving the construction materials.

  • In this study, the artificial coarse aggregate was manufactured by using coal ash and low grade clay. The characteristics of a coal ash-clay system were investigated using XRD, XRF, TG-DTA, SEM and Dilatometer with various coal ash contents. The chemical compositions are the fly ash, bottom ash and clay, $Al_2O_3$ are 28.5 wt%, 32.4 wt% and 18.1 wt%, and $SiO_2$ are 33.0 wt%, 53.7 wt% and 68.4 wt% in weight ratio, respectively. The shrinkage of specimens started at around $850^{\circ}C$ and changed little up to $1100^{\circ}C$, but increased markedly at above $1100^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage rate is strongly related to the decarbonization amount of coal ash. At the sintering temperature $1150^{\circ}C$, it was found that quartz, mullite, anorthite and albite phase exist in all specimens. It was found that bottom-clay system specimen sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ had a good compressive strength of 87.5 kg/$cm^2$, and the compressive strength of bottom-clay specimen was higher than that of fly-clay system specimen. The reusability of coal ash as a raw material in the process of shotcrete resources such as artifical coarse aggregate is highly expected.

  • TDF (Tire derived fuel) Fly ash is an industrial by-product when scraped tire was used a fuel source at the power plant. TDF Fly ash has been classified as domestic waste at the workplace so far and has not been appropriately utilized. We conducted a fundamental physical property test of asphalt mixture to investigate the possibility of using TDF Fly ash as a mineral filler of asphalt mixture for exploring new usage strategies. TDF Fly ash meets KS F 3501 asphalt mixture mineral filler criteria. And the optimal asphalt binder amount was determined to be 4.5% by Marshall design. Mineral filler content was determined at 3% and analyzed by comparing using mineral filler as stone powder. The basic physical property test of the asphalt mixture was evaluated to the provision indicated in "Production and Construction Guidelines for Asphalt Mixture" published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In the test, Marshall stability test, dynamic immersion test, tensile strength ratio test, wheel tracking test were carried out. As a result of the experiment, Marshall stability and dynamic stability satisfied the standards, and confirmed the stability and Dynamic immersion and tensile strength ratio test that TDF Fly ash is more effective for scaling and moisture resistance than stone dust. Therefore, in this research, it is expected that multilateral utilization of TDF Fly ash, and a positive effect can be also expected.

  • At the end of 1997 about 3 million tons of coal ash was produced as byproducts from the coal fired electrical power plants in Korea. Only about 27% of that byproducts was utilized as the admixtures of cement and concrete industry. But the large quantity of coal fired fly-ash has been used as the soil improvement materials in other countries. So the aim of this study is the estimation of the applicability of the coal fired fly-ash as microfine grouting materials by admixing the superfine particles which were separated from the coal fired fly-ash for the higher values. The 6 types of specimens were manufactured in the laboratory for the purpose of estimating the chemical and physical properties of cement and grouts. These specimens consisted of 2 specific surfaces of 6, 000 and 8, 000$cm^2$/g in Elaine method. And these specimens are devide into 3 ratios (30%, 50%, 70%) of fly-ash by weight. From the estimated properties of the coal fired fly-ash microflne cements and grouts, 50% fly-ash is the most suitable ratio for grouting materials. However, further study of durability is necessary for using fly-ash grouts practically at the field projects. The higher content of the unburned carbon of fly-ash increases the thinner layer of carbon on the surface of solution of grouts, and requires more quantity of surface active agent. As a results of this study, it is found that the microfine fly-ash is very useful as a good grouting material if 50% of fly-ash is added with the microfine portland cement. So, in the near future, if the coal fired fly-ash is able to be used as grouting material in Korea, the demand of fly-ash will increase rapidly.

  • Fly ash produced in coal combustion is a fine-grained material consisting mostly of spherical, glassy, and porous particles. A physical, morphological, and chemical characteristic of fly ash has been analyzed. This study may contribute to the data base of domestic fly ash, the improvement of combustion efficiency, ash recycling and ash collection in the electrostatic precipitator. The physical property of fly ash is determined using a particle counter for the measurement of ash size distribution and gravimeter. Morphological characteristic of fly ash is performed using a scanning electron micrograph and an optical microscope. The chemical components of fly ash are determined using an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP). The distribution of fly ash size was ranged from 15 to 25 $\mu$m in mass median diameter. Exposure conditions of flue gas temperature and duration within the combustion zone of the boiler played an important role on the morphological properties of the fly ash such as shape, relative opacity, coloration, cenosphere and plerosphere. The spherical fly ash might be generated at the condition of complete combustion. The size of fly ash was found to be increased the with particle-particle interaction of agglomeration and coagulation. Fly ash consisted of $SiO_2\;Al_2O_3\;and\;Fe_2O_3$ with 85% and carbon with 3~10% of total mass.

  • The quality inspections items such as loss on drying, total ash, and acid-insoluble ash contents in herbal medicines, have a correlation with external sources of pollution, but are not themselves hazardous factors. Z-scores for standard normal distribution were used to investigate herbal medicines requiring quality control, which exceeds the regulatory limits of quality inspection. In total, 7,773 samples were analyzed based on plant parts. For the loss on drying, the numbers of items of herbal medicines requiring quality control are like these; 15 items for above-ground parts and 5 items for underground parts. For the total ash, 21 items for above-ground parts and 4 items for underground parts. For the acid-insoluble ash, 8 items for above-ground parts and 1 item for underground parts.

  • To recycle waste materials, this work was focused on development of glass-ceramic from incinerator fly ash with a large content of Cl and its physical property was evaluated. In the process, water washing as a pre-treatment before melting the fly ash was used to remove large amount of Cl component in the ash and to reduce melting temperature. As a result, glass was obtained at below $100^{\circ}C$ compared to the melting temperature before washing the ash. Also, internal crystallization occurred under single stage heat treatment (at $850-950^{\circ}C$ for 20-340min) without adding other materials into the ash. It was shown that the glass-ceramic was composed of four crystals, diopside, anorthite, akermanite, and unknown phase. Hardness of 8.3GPa was found in the glass-ceramic, which is a high value compared to reported others. Thus, the present process suggests that a good glass-ceramic produced from an incinerator ash could be applicable for structural materials in terms of economic and environmental points.

  • Coal-fired power plants supply roughly 50 percent of the nation's electricity but produce a disproportionate share of electric utility-related air pollution. Coal combustion technology can facilitate volume reduction of up to 90%, with the inorganic contaminants being captured in furnace bottom ash and fly ash residues. These disposal coal ash residues are however governed by the potential release of constituent contaminants into the environment. Accelerated carbonation process has been shown to have a potential for improving the chemical stability and leaching behavior of bottom ash residues. The aim of this work was to quantify the volume of $CO_2$ that could be sequestrated with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize the contaminated heavy metals from bottom ash samples. In this study, we used PC boiler bottom ash, Kanvera reactor (KR) slag and calcined waste lime for measuring chemical analysis and heavy metals leaching tests were performed and also the formation of calcite resulting from accelerated carbonation process was investigated by thermo gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA).
