  • In recent years, the creation of waste recycling society has been required to cope with the traditional ways of waste treatments. In accordance with the package recycling law in force, calls for the developments of new waste treatment techniques suitable for 21st century are growing higher. A new ash melting furnace system named Eco Burner Ash Melting Furnace System has been developed. It is a burner type ash melting system in which the fluffs made of the plastics segregated from municipal solid wastes are directly fired at high temperature in the furnace. This system provides an economical ash melting system because plastic wastes or paper scraps that have heretofore been considered hard to recycle are used in compensation for fossil fuel. In this paper, we describe the ash melting test results obtained from a substantiative facility.

  • Mechanical characteristics of bottom ash produced in coal-fired power plant are investigated to utilize as light-weight fill materials. Triaxial compression test, water retention test, and unsaturated direct shear test were conducted for weathered soil (WS), reclaimed bottom ash (RBA), and screened bottom ash (BA). RBA had larger frictional angle and lower effective cohesion than those of WS. Water retention charactersitics of RBA and BA existed within distributions of soil-water characteristic curves for domestic weathered soils. Unsaturated shear strength of RBA was similar to that of WS at matric suctions of 50 kPa and 100 kPa. As a conclusion, bottom ash can be used as fill materials to replace the conventional construction materials by.

  • Recently, coal ashes which are increasing annually are buried in ash ponds as industrial wastes. However, buried coal ashes can pollute ground water and ground due to leachate from coal ashes, which are serious environmental problem. Even though a lot of researches on recycling of coal ashes have been conducted, only 15% of coal ashes are recycled up to now. And those recycled coal ashes are not bottom ashes but fly ashes. So in this study, it was proved that Bottom Ash can be used as an alternative material to O.P.C(Ordinary Portland Cement) according to laboratory test results and test field construction. Also bottom ash is more economical and environmentally friendly than O.P.C.

  • It is believed that fly ash could be suitable for preparing the sialon by carbothermal reduction method because the total amount of SiO2 and Al2O3 is above 80% and the unburned residual carbon is above 5% within the fly ash. The effects of reaction temperature (1350, 1400, 145$0^{\circ}C$) reaction time (1, 5, 10 hours) and the amount of carbon additions (C/SiO2=2, 3, 4 mole) on the $\beta$-sialon synthesis were obserbed, It was conformed that $\beta$-sialon (Z=2.15~2.18) was formed as major phase under all of the synthesis conditions and small amount of Si2ON2 SiC, AlN and Si3N4 was formed depending on the synthesis conditions. FeSix intermetal-lic compound was formed above 140$0^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature due to the large amount of iron oxides within the raw fly ash.

  • In order to investigate the reaction in the system of fly ash-sulfuric acid-calcium hydroxide the hydrates were produced by the addition of Ca(OH)2 to fly ash activated with sulfuric acid at various temperatures. And then they were characterized by XRD. SEM and TG-DTA. It was found that in the reaction of fly ash with sulfuric acid fly ash was not decomposed but Al2O3 and SiO2 component in it were activated. The addition of calcium hydroxide into this system resulted in the formation of ettringite and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) As the concentration of sulfuric acid and reaction temperature increased the amount of calcium hydroxide decreased fast. At this time gypsum produced by the reaction calcium hydroxide with sulfuric acid was consumed to form ettringite. Accordingly the formation of ettringite increased with calcium hydroxide and reaction time. And it showed faster than the formation of C-S-H.

  • This study is on the increasement of strength about soft ground improvement material using waste residual(paper fly ash, coke ash, slag) by fire. Through this study the authors have analyzed the strength improvement of mixed soft silty sand with improvement materials. The strength of mixed soils with high mixture ratio and more curing days increased. But CA-30(cokes 60%) make more low strength improvement than others. Therefore the authors find out that paper fly ash+cokes, paper fly ash+slag or cokes+slag improvement material is more effect in improvement of soft silty sand than cokes+cenlent. And Ettringite reaction is free mixed soils with more than two materials.

  • Energetically-modified material using reject fly ash was manufactured to investigate the effect of the material on strength characteristic of cement mortar. In order to modify reject fly ash, a vibration mill was used. after grinding process, the defects in the alignment of atom was checked using transmission electron microscope. It was found that the compressive strength values of 28 days-cured specimens using energetically-modified reject fly ash (ERFA) were higher than that of mortar with non-ground reject fly ash.

  • This study evaluated the compressive strength, freeze-thaw and sulfate resistance characteristics of concrete using CFBC-Ash. The CFBC-Ash was adjusted to a particle size of 75 ㎛ or less and using by increasing the fineness of powder through milling. As a result, it was confirmed that the concrete using CFBC-Ash shows a high compressive strength, durability. Also, it is confirmed that CFBC-ash can be used as a concrete binder.

  • Accurate analysis of fly ash particles is not trivial because of complex nature in physical and chemical properties. SPLITT fractionation (SF) was employed to fractionate the fly ash particles into subpopulations in large quantities. Then the SF-fractions were analyzed by the steric mode of sedimentation field-flow fractionation (Sd/StFFF) for size analysis. The SF-fractions were also analyzed by ICP-OES. The results showed that the fly ash is mainly composed of Fe, Ca, Mg and Mn. No particular trends were observed between the particle size and the concentrations of Fe, Ca, Mg, while Mn, Cu and Zn were in higher concentrations in smaller particles. Sample preparation procedures were established, where the fly ash particles were sieved to remove large contaminants, and then washed with acetone to remove organics on the surface of particles. The sample preparation and analysis methods developed in this study could be applied to other environmental particles.
