Objective. The objective of this study was to examine the hypothesis that inflammatory synovial fluid from TMJ internal derangement initiates a transient increase in intracellular calcium concentration ([$Ca^{2+}$]i) in chondrocytes and the induced Ca2+ signaling affects iNOS/COX-2 gene expression patterns following exposure to inflamed synovial fluid. Materials and Methods. Two female adult patients with symptoms of TMD who agreed to participate in the study were selected for this study. Immortalized human juvenile costal chondrocyte C-28/I2 was grown to 80% confluency and synovial fluids from two patients were added respectively to culture media for 24 hours at the concentration of 100ng/10ml. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) was used to examine changes of intracellular calcium concentration ([$Ca^{2+}$]i). RT-PCR was performed to identify the expression profile of IL-1${\alpha}$, iNOS, COX-2. Results. Increased [$Ca^{2+}$]i was observed in chondrocytes subjected to inflamed synovial fluid compared to control cultures and in respective cultures exposed to inflamed synovial fluids from each patient, IL-1${\beta}$, COX-2 mRNA were detected. However, in neither case iNOS mRNA was expressed. IL-1${\alpha}$, COX-2, and iNOS mRNA were expressed in control culture. Conclusion. Our results show that immortalized chondrocytes cultured with inflamed synovial fluids from patients diagnosed as disc displacement without reduction and limitation in mouth opening showed increased calcium concentration and expression of COX-2 while inhibiting the production of iNOS, which in turn could adversely affect the chondrocytes in at least short term by hindering physiologic role of NO against inflammatory cascades. These findings suggest that inflamed synovial fluid may differentially regulate the transcriptomes of relevant inflammatory mediators, especially iNOS/COX-2 axis in chondrocytes through adjusting calcium transients.
It is known that obesity is associated with chronic adult disease including stroke. However the relationship between stroke and obesity has not been discussed sufficiently, The purpose of this study was to confirm whether the serum Leptin levels related to BMI and these were associated with serum lipid levels and other risk factors in stroke patients. The subjects were 68 stroke patients(male 36. female 32) hospitalized in the Department of Circulatory Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Kyung Hee University, Seoul. Obesity was shown in 16 patients(24%) whose BMI were above 25. and in 15 patients(22%) who represented higher values than normal in serum Leptin levels. BMI correlated with serum Leptin level(p=0.04), with Triglyceride(p=0.019) and with Total lipid(p=0.001) significantly. Meanwhile serum Leptin levels significantly correlated with Total cholesterol(p=0.013) only. BMI in the group with a history of smoking was significantly lower than that of the non-smoking group(p=0.01). Serum Leptin levels were higher in the group with Hypertension than the non-Hypertension group(p=0.026), lower in the non-Drinking group(p=0.006) and the smoking group(p=0.001) than the drinking group and the non-smoking group. respectively. So we concluded that BMI significantly correlates with serum Leptin levels and serum lipid levels in stroke patients.
Objective: The purposes of this study were to provide an epidemiologic data base related to the orthodontic treatment need and to know the changing trends about treatment modality of private orthodontic clinics. Methods: Distribution, trends and orthodontic treatment plan of malocclusion patients were investigated in 1,620 consecutive patients who had been visited and examined in 4 private orthodontic clinics located in Seoul from 2003-2006. Results: Percentage of male and female patients was 26.9% and 73.1% respectively Age distribution had shown that percentage of the patients above 13 years was 78.9%, and above 19 years was 59.0%. Average age of whole patients was 20.5 years. With regard to Angle classification, each percentage of Class I, Class II division 1, Class II division 2 and Class III malocclusion was 38.9%, 34.8%, 2.3% and 24.0%. The percentage of extraction cases(00.9%) outnumbered nonextraction cases(39.1%) and 46% of extraction cases were upper and lower 1st premolar extraction cases. Patients who had chose treatment with fixed appliance and orthognathic surgery was 10.2%. Conclusions: Because the high percentage of adult, Class II malocclusion and orthognathic surgery cases in patients of private orthodontic clinics were shown in this study, orthodontic education program and national health policy in Korea need reformation.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of Lumbar Lordosis Angle(LLA) between patients with Low Back Pain(LBP) and control groups. Methods: Questionnaires were completed by 40 adult LBP patients seeking physical therapy services and by 40 controls at the Department of Physical Therapy. Saejong Neurosurgical Clinic in Taegu city from October 1999 to March 2000. LLA was measured on lateral x-ray films in a standing position. The angle between a line parallel to the top of the first Lumbar(L1) and the top of the fifth Lumbar(L5) was defined LLA. Results: LLA of $29.88^{\circ}$ for LBP patients was a statistically significant decrease from that of $35.31^{\circ}$ for controls in the difference of lumbar lordosis(p<0.01). There were statistically significant differences between senders in patient groups. Females$(32.32^{\circ})$ had significantly greater angles than males$(27.32^{\circ})$(p<0.05), while $36.63^{\curc}$ for female was also greater than $34.12^{\circ}$ for male in the controls. No significant difference was found between age. In patient groups, $27.95^{\circ}$ for below age 40 was a smaller than $32.32^{\circ}$ for above, however, $35.82^{\circ}$ for below age 40 was a little greater than $34.27^{\circ}$ for above in controls. Patients in a sitting posture had greater LLA$(31.35^{\circ}$ than those standing$(28.93^{\circ})$, however values for controls were similar to each other. Conclusion: Results from this study indicate that distinct differences exist among patients and controls and gender, whereas little difference exists in age and working posture.

The objective of this study was to contribute to the enhancement of food labeling and the development of food labels which are more informative to consumers. The questionnaires had been collected from adult female consumers living in Seoul, Kyonggi, Choongnam and Chungbuk province. Out of 950 answers collected 792 were analyzed. Ninety two percent of respondents were aware of food labels, however only 67.6% of them knew about the fact that food labeling was regulated by the law. Respondents recognized the major purpose of food labeling as informing and protecting the consumer. Most of the respondents answered that they confirmed the contents of food labels at the time of purchase especially with regard to safety aspects, such as expiration on data and manufacture date. Eighty four percent of the respon dents showed confidence in the contents of food labels. The rests answered they were hot confident because they experienced directly, or indirectly discord of food contents in fact and in label.

Consistent with a previous study on the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (BPH) (Seo et al., 2009), we identified seven distinct EPG waveforms (np, L1, L2, L3, L4-a, L4-b, and L5) in adult female Laodelphax striatellus (SBPH) that fed on rice plants, by using the direct current electrical penetration graph (DC-EPG) system. The shape of waveforms and the pattern of occurrence of each waveform of SBPH were very similar to those of BPH. L3 and L4-a always occurred prior to L4-b. Periodical honeydew excretion was observed in L4-b only. Microsection observation following laser stylectomy revealed that the tips of SBPH stylets severed in L3, L4-a, and L4-b were commonly located in or near the phloem region of rice plants, but were located in the xylem in L5. Plant sap flowed from the stylets severed in L4-b only, and its main carbohydrate component was detected as sucrose by HPLC analysis. These results and the patterns of EPG waveform progress in SBPH suggested that feeding activities on rice plant tissue were relevant to each EPG waveform. L1 and L2 corresponded to the initiation of stylet penetration and stylet movement with salivation on the outside of the vascular bundle. L3 and L4-a were related to feeding activities within the phloem region in preparation for phloem sap ingestion. L4-b was closely associated with phloem sap ingestion, and L5 corresponded to xylem feeding behavior.
Numerical measurements were made for fresh weight, body length and width, head width, and color and length of antenna of Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus adults, a primary vector of pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in Korea. We measured 563 females and 601 males that emerged out of dead pine logs from 2001 to 2002. General linear model analysis showed that measurements of fresh weight, body length, and body width were significantly higher in females than in males. Head width was not significantly different between sexes. Antennal length of males was significantly longer than that of females. For females and males respectively, average fresh weights were 0.305g and 0.277g, body lengths 20.97mm and 19.93mm, body widths 6.52mm and 6.18mm, head widths 3.78mm and 3.70mm, and antennal lengths 31.19mm and 45.49 mm. Antennal length or ratio of antennal length to body length overlapped in some ranges between 2 sexes. Therefore antennal length itself or ratio of antennal length to body length could not be used as a definite criterion to discriminate sexes. However, check on color of the antennae of 4,033 adults revealed without exception that basal part of every segment of flagellum of female antenna was covered with whitish-grey hairs, while whole part of every segment of male flagellum was covered with brownish-black hairs. This characteristics might be a best way to differentiate sex of this species.
These studies were conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on the developmentof Delia platura (Meigen) under a laboratory condition at five different temperatures. The developmentalperiods of D. platurcr from egg to adult emcrgence at the temperatures of 11, 15, 19, 23, and 27$^{\circ}$C were67.8k 14.5, 43.7t-9.4, 31.2-t-7.0, 22.4k4.9, and 18.3k4.1 days, respectively. Based on these results, threshold temperature of development and effective cumulative degree-day (DD) for overall developmentwas 0.6"C and 579.8 DD, respectively. Generation of time D. pluturci averaged 30.8 days, and meannumber of eggs produced per female was 246.5 k 16.9 at 23$^{\circ}$C. Hatching rate and emergence rate curvesin relation to the temperature was dome shaped with the peak of 90.0 and 85.2% at 23"C, it wassuggesting that hatching and emergence were inhibited by high temperature above that temperature.Pupation rate of the insect reared on garlic and on onion were higher than those reared on other diets.Oviposition of D. platum usually began 7-9 days after emergence at 23$^{\circ}$C. Females laid about 3-4 eggsin a day. Oviposition of the females peaked at the age of 12- 18 days after emergence. of 12- 18 days after emergence.
In order to establish the successive rearing system brush-footed butterflies (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) were reared in a room. Artificial diets were developed for a year-round rearing. Bu-diet was best to rear these butterflies among 3 kinds of diet used. The freeze-dried host plant leaf powder in diet was better than heat-dried one $(60^{\circ}C)$ in the growth of larvae. The rearing results were best in the diet C/N ratio was 1:1. The 24-hrs old eggs could be stored for 5 days at $15^{\circ}C$ or for 3 days at $5^{\circ}C$ and showed 75% of hatchability. On the other hand, pupae could be stored for maximum 15 days at $15^{\circ}C$ because the emergence of abnormal adults appeared much more as the cold storage period got longer. And the adult was able to be stored until 60 days at refrigerator without relation of nectar-sucking period before cold-storage and storage temperature. Also a simple artificial ovipositing kit was devised by ${\Phi}9$ cm of petri-dish and a female oviposited $278{\pm}27$ of eggs with adding the ether extract of host plant to this kit. The systematic successive rearing method of brush-footed butterflies in a room was completed.
This Study was conducted at Intensive Care Unit of H & S Hospitals from Jan 4 to April 7, 1981 on 14mail & 26female adult patients. Each patient was screened and found to have nonbacteriuria in clean catch specimen before catheterization. Clean catch apecimen through Foley catheter were obtained after 24hours, 48hours and 72hours from catheterization. The result of this study is reviewed in a statistical analysis of percentage & Chi Square test to obtain the following findings. 1) The occurenc of bacteriuria in patients according to duration of indwelling catheter. a. 9.1% of the patient showed evidence of bacteriuria 24hours post catheterization specimen and 60% showed 48hours post cathetreization, while 68.4% of the patient showed evidence of bacteriuria 72hours post catheterization specimen. The occurence of bacteriuria in patients were significant differences at 1% level between duration of indwelling catheter. b. Mail patients had no infection 24hours post catheterization, 50% displayed bacteriuria 48hours post catheterization & 62.5% displayed bacteriuria 71hours post catheterization. 11.1% of femail patients displayed infection 24hours post catheterization 66.7% displayed infection 48hours post catheterization and 72.7% displayed infection 72hours post catheterization. There were significant differences at 1% level between bacteriuria occurence of mail & femail patients and the duration of insertion. 2) 56% of those patient who have altered mental state developed bacteriuria, while 40% of those patient who have alear mental state developed bacteriuria. But there was without statistically any significant difference between patient's mental status. 3) The occurence of bacteriuria with the administration of antibiotics in 36 patient was in 50%. The occurence of bacteriuria without the administration of antibiotics in 4 patients was in 50%. But there was without statistically any significant difference between the administration of antibiotics. 4) The occurence of bacteriuria in patients according to frequency of bladder irrigation. 50% of those patient who irrigated twice a day developed bacteriuria, 63.6% of those patient who irrigated once a day developed bacteriuria. The occurence of bacteriuria in patients were significant differences at 1% level between frequency of bladder irrigation. 5) The occurence of bacteriuria in patients who did perineal care once a day was 58.1%, 22.6% of those patient who did perineal care twice a day developed bacteriuria. But there was without statistically any signiticant differences between frequency of perineal care. 6) Most frequent bacteria of all bacterial strains isolated by culture of the urine was E. coli(45%). Enterococci & Staphylococcus were 15% respectively.
