Sparse Data Cleaning using Multiple Imputations

  • Real data as web log file tend to be incomplete. But we have to find useful knowledge from these for optimal decision. In web log data, many useful things which are hyperlink information and web usages of connected users may be found. The size of web data is too huge to use for effective knowledge discovery. To make matters worse, they are very sparse. We overcome this sparse problem using Markov Chain Monte Carlo method as multiple imputations. This missing value imputation changes spare web data to complete. Our study may be a useful tool for discovering knowledge from data set with sparseness. The more sparseness of data in increased, the better performance of MCMC imputation is good. We verified our work by experiments using UCI machine learning repository data.

The Statistical Indicators of OECD and Korea for Student Health (학생 건강에 대한 OECD와 한국의 통계지표)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the statistical indicators of OECD and Korea for student health among Korea's approval statistics. Methods: Searching for health indicators by using Health at a Glance 2009, Society at a Glance 2009, and Education at a Glance 2009 through the formal OECD web site in 2010, and investigating the approval statistics through the Korean formal organizational web sites and published data in 2012. Results: Among OECD indicators, indicators for adolescent health were smoking and alcohol consumption, nutrition, physical activity, overweight and obesity, bullying, risk behaviors, and poverty children. However, most of Korea student health indicators were missing except poverty children and life satisfaction, because OECD has taken chiefly data from Health Behavior in School-aged Children survey (HBSC), international study, which has not been carried out in Korea. The Ministry Of Education, Science And Technology (MEST) and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and National Youth Policy Institute in Korea have produced the major statistics for student health which was only 11 (1.3%) among 858 approval statistics. Conclusion: Identifying a current Korea school health is essential through participating actively to OECD whose statistic indicators are internationally comparable with Students Physical Development Survey, MEST's approval statistics, using Korea Student Health Examination. It was also suggested that quantitative and qualitative expansions for Korea student health statistics by the activation of approval statistics including processed statistics, and by researchers' easy expanded access to a raw data.

  • Statistics is based on a data, therefore a practical use of suitable data is important in teaching statistics. But, most teachers feel always that there is seldom data that students can understand easily. In this study, we presented a teaching method of statistics education that can elevate student's participation and interest in their statistics class using a web-based data collection program and MS Excel software. Also, the presented teaching method may apply extending to various part of statistics education.

Operation of StarDB web services and its Virtual Observatory supports

  • We present the current operation status of StarDB web services by showing its user access statistics. The StarDB web services started its operation in late November, allowing world-wide users to access results of new variability analysis for Northern Sky Variability Survey light curves. New analysis results of various time-series data have been added to the StarDB services. Importantly, our services have supported a simple cone search, which is an internationally well-defined catalog search interface in the international Virtual Observatory systems. We have collected user access statistics such as how users find our analysis data since its operation in later November. We expect our analysis of the StarDB operation to help Korean community members who plan and operate their own web services preparing for a future era of big survey data.

  • 최근 과학적 정책결정의 합리성을 뒷받침하기 위해서 통계에 대한 수요가 급증하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 통계 수요자들은 사용자가 필요한 통계표를 직접 실시간적으로 산출하고자 하는 요구를 지속적으로 제기하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 의사결정 및 통계시스템에서 주로 사용하고 있는 데이터웨어하우스, OLAP 시스템 및 스타스키마에 관하여 알아보고 수요자들의 다양한 요구에 부응하기 위한 교육인적자원 통계정보 시스템의 구축에 대해 기술한다. 또한 교육인적자원 통계정보시스템의 핵심기능인 Web OLAP 시스템을 통해서 수요자가 원하는 교육통계정보를 실시간적으로 산출하기 위한 시스템의 구축방안에 대하여 기술하고자 한다.

  • The web is one of the most plentiful sources of images. The web has an immediate need for image processing technology in Java. This paper provides a practical introduction to statistical image processing using Java on the web. The paper describes how images are represented in Java and deals with four image processing operations based on basic statistical methods: point processing, spatial filtering, edge detection and image segmentation.

  • 정보 공유와 비즈니스 수행 등의 매체로서 World Wide Web의 이용이 보편화됨에 따라 다양하고 방대한 데이터를 웹을 통하여 얻을 수 있게 되었으며, 이러한 데이터로부터 유용한 정보를 추출하기 위한 데이터 분석과 활용은 많은 분야에서 중요한 사안으로 인식되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 웹 로그(web log)데이터로부터 정보를 추출하기 위한 과정 및 방안에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 로그 데이터의 특징과 통계 데이터와의 차이점, 데이터 수집 및 사전 처리 과정, 추출할 수 있는 정보 및 분석 방법 등을 제시하고 로그 데이터 분석 예제를 제시한다.

A Web Recommendation System using Grid based Support Vector Machines

  • Main goal of web recommendation system is to study how user behavior on a website can be predicted by analyzing web log data which contain the visited web pages. Many researches of the web recommendation system have been studied. To construct web recommendation system, web mining is needed. Especially, web usage analysis of web mining is a tool for recommendation model. In this paper, we propose web recommendation system using grid based support vector machines for improvement of web recommendation system. To verify the performance of our system, we make experiments using the data set from our web server.

A Web-based SAS System for Lab Statistics

  • For lab statistics the statistical package SAS is usually used in PC environment. But most Universities in Korea have bought 'Academic Initiative Package chair licence', which allows to install SAS to student lab PCs only. Most students are hardly able to afford to purchase a licence for use of SAS in their PCs at home or other places than school. It would be very convenient to have a web-based SAS system, physically located inside a campus, which university students can use through internet. In this paper we report the web-based SAS system implemented for the lab purpose of Yeungnam University using SAS/Intrnet module. We overcome some Server-Client environmental difficulties not allowing use of the SAS command 'infile' by implementing modules with PHP language. In the system, users can see and execute some basic SAS sample codes by clicking buttons, which makes students feel comfy in SAS programming.
