  • War has been a reason for the culture of one conservative country to make contact with the culture of another country. The Crusade, among other wars, caused cultural exchange between the orient and the occident and had a great influence on the western costume. This paper has made an attempt to find out the influence of the Crusade with respect to the cultural exchange between the orient and the Occident and to study the influence which the Crusade has had on the western costume. The Crusade was the war in which the European Christians tried to retake the Holy Land, Jerusalem, from the Islamites through the 11th century to the 13th century. As a result of this war,the autyority of the Pope was weakned, the nobles were ruined and royal authority was consolidated. Due to the contact with the Orient, trade had become active, cityes had developed and the middle class of rich merchant had grown. Gothic architecture also appeared in the Occident at this time due to the religious influence of the Crusade. Turban type headdress and the brink decoration of clothes had been very popular under the influence of the Orient. Embroidery and applique had developed and silk fabrics which had been imported from the Orient had made the costumes more fabrics which had been imported from the Orient had made the costumes more gorgeous and luxurious. Many accessories were imported from the Orient. The Oriental culture contributed to the use of rich and bright colorsm, various ornaments and splendid textiles of the western costume. Owing to the influence of war itself, many costumes had been newly made in order to adapt to the hot desert climates of the Orient. Blazon decorations, uniforms and armour had also developed.

  • Cymbidium is one of the largest genus in the orchid family and a number of hybrids have been bred in the world. During mass-propagating the Cymbidium "Dongyang" using the meristem culture technology, a useful leaf mutant was selected from the protocom like bodies. The new Cymbidium variety by in vitro mutangesis from "Dongyang" was named as 'Daegook' in 1998. Compared to Dongyang, "Daegook" mutant has white or yellow stripes along the margin of leaves and flowers. The plant length of "Daegook" was shorter than "Dongyang" and the mean length and width of leaf in "Daegook" was 40 cm and 1.6 cm, respectively. The new variety, "Daegook", is expected to be a popular Cymbidium variety among consumer as a ornamental orchid mutant for pot culture by its fine and unique stripes and growth characters.

  • Bacillus velezensis CJ1, showing significant fibrinolytic activity, was isolated from Myeolchi Jeotgal, a popular Korean fermented seafood. When B. velezensis CJ1 was grown on four different culture media, the culture on the Luria-Bertani (LB) broth showed the highest fibrinolytic activity (102.94 mU/μl) at 48 h. LB was also the best medium for growth. SDS-PAGE of culture supernatant showed four major bands, 38, 35, 27, and 22 kDa in size. Fibrin zymography showed four active bands, 50, 47, 40, and 30 kDa in size. A gene homologous to aprE of the Bacillus species was cloned by PCR. DNA sequencing showed that aprECJ1 can encode a protease consisting of 382 amino acids. The translated amino acid sequence of AprECJ1 showed high identity values with those of B. velezensis strains and other Bacillus species. The aprECJ1 gene was introduced into B. subtilis WB600 using an E. coli-Bacillus shuttle vector, pHY300PLK, and overexpressed. A 27 kDa band corresponding to the mature form of AprECJ1 was produced and confirmed by SDS-PAGE and fibrin zymography. B. subtilis WB600 [pHYaprECJ1] showed 1.8-fold higher fibrinolytic activity than B. velezensis CJ1 at 48 h.

  • This study has been conducted to research the interests and tastes in Korean cuisine aiming at Germans who have lived in Korea for over 6 months, create new Korean menu items to their taste, and provide preliminary data for the globalization of Korean cuisine. Germans living in Korea tend to prefer Korean dishes as much as German dishes, and males have more opportunities to have different Korean dishes than females through social activities. Most of them answered that they barely cook Korean food and gave low marks for the globalization of Korean food and ease of cooking. The main reason given for not cooking Korean food themselves was that it is complicated to cook, which is a direct indication of the lack of knowledge of the recipes. Therefore, the importance of simplification and standardization of recipes for the globalization of Korean food was revealed. From the study on Korean food preferences based on the restaurant frequenting practices of Germans, the most popular Korean restaurants were those which were located in popular restaurant districts or within walking distance and those with an elegant or tranquil ambience. To promote the globalization of Korean food, development of diverse easy recipes or education about Korean dishes for foreigners would enhance their understanding and familiarity of Korean cuisine.

  • As the molecular breeding was progressed, many plant transformation techniques were attained for improving transformation accuracy and used to produce useful transgenic plants. Day by day, new varieties were developed so new transformation techniques required for these newly developed varieties. Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is a popular and economically important ornamental plant, all over the world. Keeping this in view, we selected 18 varieties of D. caryophyllus L. commonly available in the market and did optimization of culture conditions for more efficient tissue culture and to get higher number of plants via micro-propagation. Four varieties namely Yellowdotcom, Jakarta, Belmonte, Polartessino etc. were selected for organ culture studies from single cell line. The optimum growth was recorded in the MS media supplied with sucrose 3%, NAA 1.0 mg/L and TDZ 1.0 mg/L. except Belmonte, in which, BA 1.0 mg/L was found to be the best combination, in place of TDZ, rest ingredients were same. The most efficient coagulating agent used to obtain higher number of plant from callus was phytagel 0.3%. The most effective explant for higher shoot formation was stem in which 80.2% shoot formation was recorded. It also reduced culture periods by 6 days.

  • Bean sprouts is one of the popular traditional foodstuffs as a subsidiary articles of diet in Korea. As the need arise from restaurents, bean sprouts were produced by forcing culture in manufacture. In oder to prevent of the hazard' by trace metals such as Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn, the contents of these metals were analyzed. Hg, Cd, and Pb were not . detected , but the mean contents of Cu and Zn were O.33ppm and 0.356 ppm, respectively. It seems that the higher oontents of Cu and Zn in beas sprouts was the results of relative high concentration of itself. These contents has no problean in now, but the more sanitary management in manufacture and in bean producing region will be needed.

  • Beef luncheon meat is one of the most popular meals in several countries in the world including Egypt. Thirty one fungal species and 3 species varieties were recovered from 30 samples of beef luncheon meat collected from different supermarkets in Qena. Alternaria, Aspergillus, Emericella, Mucor, Mycosphaerella, Penicillium and Rhizopus were the most common genera on the two types of media. From the above genera, the most prevalent species were Alternaria alternate, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. terreus, Emericella nidulans, Mucor racemosus, Mycosphaerella tassiana, Penicillium chrysogenum and Rhizopus stolonifer. Screening of fungi for their abilities to produce lipase enzyme showed that, ten isolates represented 32.26% of total isolates appeared high lipase production, while sixteen isolates (51.61%) were moderate and 5 isolates (16.13%) were low producers. Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum and Nectria haematococca produced the highest amount of lipase enzyme, so these fungi were used in further studies. The incorporation of five food preservatives (Disodium phosphate, sodium benzoate, citric acid, potassium sorbate and sodium citrate) individually in the culture medium of lipase production exhibited an inhibitive effect on the mycelial growth and enzyme production by Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum and Nectria haematococca.

  • Neurons-on-a-Chip technology has been developed to provide diverse in vitro neuro-tools to study neuritogenesis, synaptogensis, axon guidance, and network dynamics. The two core enabling technologies are soft-lithography and microelectrode array technology. Soft lithography technology made it possible to fabricate microstamps and microfluidic channel devices with a simple replica molding method in a biological laboratory and innovatively reduced the turn-around time from assay design to chip fabrication, facilitating various experimental designs. To control nerve cell behaviors at the single cell level via chemical cues, surface biofunctionalization methods and micropatterning techniques were developed. Microelectrode chip technology, which provides a functional readout by measuring the electrophysiological signals from individual neurons, has become a popular platform to investigate neural information processing in networks. Due to these key advances, it is possible to study the relationship between the network structure and functions, and they have opened a new era of neurobiology and will become standard tools in the near future.
