The statistical characteristics of aerosol-cloud interactions over East Asia were investigated using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite data. The long-term relationship between various aerosol and cloud parameters was estimated using correlation analysis, principle component analysis, and Aerosol Indirect Effect (AIE) estimation. In correlation analysis, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was positively Correlated with Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) and Cloud Fraction (CF), but negatively correlated with Cloud Top Temperature (CTT) and Cloud Top Pressure (CTP). Fine Mode Fraction (FMF) and CCN were positively correlated over the ocean because of sea spray. In principle component analysis, AOD and FMF were influenced by water vapor. In particular, AOD was positively influenced by CF, and negatively by CTT and CTP over the ocean. In AIE estimation, the AIE value in each cloud layer and type was mostly negative (Twomey effect) but sometimes positive (anti-Twomey effect). This is related to regional, environmental, seasonal, and meteorological effects. Rigorous and extensive studies on aerosol-cloud interactions over East Asia should be conducted via micro- and macro-scale investigations, to determine chemical characteristics using various meteorological instruments.
For the allergy patient who needs to know the situation about the extent of pollen risk, the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences developed a pollen forecasting system based on the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling (CMAQ). In the old system, pollen emission from the oak was estimated just based on the airborne concentration and meteorology factors, resulted in high uncertainty. For improving the quality of current pollen forecasting system, therefore the estimation of pollen emission is now corrected based on the observation of pollen emission at the oak forest to better reflect the real emission pattern. In this study, the performance of the previous (NIMS2014) and current (NIMS2016) model system was compared using observed oak pollen concentration. Daily pollen concentrations and emissions were simulated in pollen season 2016 and accuracy of onset and end of pollen season were evaluated. In the NIMS2014 model, pollen season was longer than actual pollen season; The simulated pollen season started 6 days earlier and finished 13.25 days later than the actual pollen season. The NIMS2016 model, however, the simulated pollen season started only 1.83 days later, and finished 0.25 days later than the actual pollen season, showing the improvement to predict the temporal range of pollen events. Also, the NIMS2016 model shows better performance for the prediction of pollen concentration, while there is a still large uncertainty to capture the maximum pollen concentration at the target site. Continuous efforts to correct these problems will be required in the future.
There are many reports about correlations between meteorological elements and stroke. In Oriental medicine, it is recognized that the weather affects the human body and diseases, but there are few studies about the correlation between meteorological elements and pattern identification of stroke. 105 stroke patients classified into fire-heat pattern or dampress-phlegm pattern were registered during the study period. We took the measurement of each meteorological element (atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind speed) according to pattern identification and analyzed pattern identification into two groups according to mean of each meteorological element during the study period. Mean temperature was higher with the heat-fire pattern than with the dampness-phlegm pattern. Heat-fire pattern also had higher frequency when temperature was higher than mean temperature. There was no correlation between atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, or wind speed and pattern identification.
The prototype radiometric calibration algorithm of the imagers for IR channels has been developed according to the Weinreb's method. Applying the algorithm to the GOES-12 count data, we have shown that the calibration coefficients (slope and intercept) evaluated by the algorithm gives good agreement with the NESDIS's ones, and that the scanning error due to the scan mirror emissivity and stripe error are almost eliminated by the East/West angle dependent scan-mirror correction and the respective calculation of intercept for each North/South scan line, respectively.
The aim of our study understands the influence of meteorological factors relating to the formation of the red tide, and monitors the red tide by satellite remote sensing. The meteorological factors have directly influenced on red tide formation. Thus, it was possible to predict and apply to red tide formation from statistical analyses on the realtionships between red tide formation and meteorological factors, and also to realize the near real time monitoring for red tide by satellite remote sensing.
The solar and meteorological resources map is calculated using by one-layer solar radiation model (GWNU model), satellites data and numerical model output on the Korean peninsula. The Meteorological input data to perform the GWNU model are retrieved aerosol optical thickness from MODIS (TERA/AQUA), total ozone amount from OMI (AURA), cloud fraction from geostationary satellites (MTSAT-1R) and temperature, pressure and total precipitable water from output of RDAPS (Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) and KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) model operated by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). The model is carried out every hour using by the meteorological data (total ozone amount, aerosol optical thickness, temperature, pressure and cloud amount) and the basic data (surface albedo and DEM). And the result is analyzed the distribution in time and space and validated with 22 meteorological solar observations. The solar resources map is used to the solar energy-related industries and assessment of the potential resources for solar plant. The National Institute of Meteorological Research in KMA released $4km{\times}4km$ solar map in 2008 and updated solar map with $1km{\times}1km$ resolution and topological effect in 2010. The meteorological resources map homepage (http://www.greenmap.go.kr) is provided the various information and result for the meteorological-solar resources map.
Airborne pollen is known as one of the major causal agents to respiratory allergic reactions. Daily number of pollen grains was monitored using Burkard volumetric spore traps at seven locations including Seoul and Jeju during 1997-2007. Pollen grains were observed throughout the year especially from February to November. They showed similar distribution patterns of species among locations except in Jeju, where Japanese cedar vegetation is uniquely found. Peak seasons for pollen grains from trees and weeds were March to May and August to October, respectively. Tree pollens were mainly composed of pine, oak, alder, and birch. Weed pollens were mainly from Japanese hop, Worm wood, and ragweed. Diameter of pollen grains, which has a typical range of $20{\sim}60{\mu}m$, has close relationship with allergenicity. Allergenicity of tree and weed pollens is higher than that of grass pollens in general. In the case of trees and shrubs, pine trees account for about 70% of all tree pollens. However, pine pollens are weak allergens. The remaining 30% of tree pollens, including alder trees, white birches, and oaks, are moderate to strong allergens despite the smaller numbers. Grass and weeds are also highly likely to cause allergies. Especially, the pollens of Wormwood and Japanese hop are highly likely to cause allergies. Daily fluctuations in the number of pollens have to do with a variety of meteorological factors, such as temperature and rainfall.
An Observing System Experiment (OSE) using Global Ocean Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GODAPS) was conducted to evaluate the assimilation impact of Argo floats, deployed by National Institute of Meteorological Sciences/Korea Meteorological Administration (NIMS/KMA), in marginal seas around Korean peninsula. A data denial experiment was run by removing Argo floats in the Yellow Sea and the East Sea from an operational run. The assimilation results show that Argo floats bring the positive impact on the analysis of ocean internal structure in both Yellow Sea and East Sea. In the East Sea, overall positive impact in the water temperature and salinity context is found, especially outstanding improvement from 300 to 500 m depth. In the Yellow sea, the assimilation impact on water temperature and salinity is also large within 50 m depth, especially greater impact than the East Sea in salinity. However, in the Yellow Sea, the influence of Argo floats tends to be restricted to the vicinity of Argo floats, because there was only one Argo float in the middle of the Yellow Sea during the experiment period. Given that the only limited number of Argo floats generally contribute in a positive way to the improvement of the GODAPS, further progress could be expected with adding more observations from Argo floats to current observing systems.
Remote sensing becomes a new and core framework for the atmospheric sciences and closely related areas concerning with the ever-changing global environmental status. However, remote sensing in the Korea Meteorological Society is relatively new, where the first relevant paper is appeared in 1983, as well as is an area with relatively limited number of research groups. Here, we review and summarize some of the key progress in this area within Korea Meteorological Society focusing on the areas of satellite, radar, and ground based remote sensing such as lidar, spectrometer and sun photometer. Overall, the area is shown to have the most significant progress occur along with the acquisition of the key infra structures such as the COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) and S-band radar system led by Korea Meteorological Administration in early 2000. After that, the area has quickly developed into a status playing important roles to lead and support the overall activities in the atmospheric measurements. It is expected that the importance and role of the remote sensing will increase in the coming years.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of meteorological factors on sales of apparel products. Basic fiat came out daily meteorological data and sales data of apparel products in department store from 1998 to 2000. Four factors(the average temperature, rainfall, wind velocity, sunshine duration) from the nine meteorological factors were selected and were collected with Korea Meteorological Administration. Sales data were collected with business strategy department of H (department store in Seoul. The sales data were divided into six classifications, which are woman's wear, men's wear, children's wear, golf wear, sports wear, and inner wear. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Sales of apparel products were significantly correlated with the average temperature, rainfall, wind velocity, sunshine duration. Among the meteorological factors, temperature turned out to be the most influential in apparel sales and then the amount of rainfall, sunshine duration affected sales according to apparel classifications differently. 2) There were some differences among the apparel classifications in the effect of meteorological factors on the sales of apparel. In the spring. the higher the temperature was, the higher the sales of women's wear and golf wear were, but the lower the sales of children's wear, sports wear and inner wear were. In the summer, The higher the amount of rainfall was, the lower the sales of all the apparel classification were. The higher the temperature was, the higher the sales of sports wear were. In the fall, the lower the temperature was, the higher the sales of all the apparel classification except snorts wear were. In the winter, the meteorological factors had little effect on the sales of women's wear, men's wear and children's wear. The higher the temperature was, the higher the sales of golf wear were. The lower the temperature was, the higher the sales of sports wear were.
