A Study on Fluctuating Pressure Load on High Speed Train Passing through Tunnels

  • The carbody structure of a high speed train passing through a tunnel is subjected to pressure fluctuation. Fatigue strength of the carbody structure against the fluctuating pressure loading should be proved in the design stage for safety. In this study, to get the useful information on the pressure fluctuation in the tunnel, measurement has been conducted during test running of KHST on the high speed line for two years. The measured results were analyzed and arranged to be used for carbody design. A prediction method for the magnitude and frequency of pressure change was proposed and the propagating characteristics of pressure wave was investigated. By statistical analysis for the measured results, a pressure loading spectrum for the high speed train was given. The proposed method can also be used to estimate the pressure loading spectrum for new high speed line at design stage combined with the results of train performance simulation.

  • The most important thing to secure safety and reliability of railway vehicles is to verify performance characteristics of equipments, and related companies or research institutes had many efforts to verify performances and functions of equipments synthetically and efficiently. KHST(Korean High Speed Train) has been developed by KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute). An electric railway system is composed of high-tech subsystems, among which main electric equipment such as transformers and converter are critical components determining the performance of rolling stock. We developed a measurement system for on-line test and evaluation of performances of KHST. The measurement system is composed of software part and hardware part. Perfect interface between multi-users is possible. A new method to measure temperature was applied to the ]measurement system. By using the system, fault diagnosis and performance evaluation of electric equipment in Korean High Speed Train was conducted during test running.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high-speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. KHST(Korean High Speed Train) has been developed by KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) for last 6 years to satisfy the need.   • The dynamic behavior of a steel bridge crossed by the Korean High Speed Train(KHST) has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The bridge is a 2-girder simply supported steel bridge which has 40m of span length. A set of experimental tests were performed during operation of KHST, and 13 accelerometers and 6 LVDTs were utilized for measurement of dynamic responses. Numerical analyses considering bridge-structure interaction were performed for validation of experimental results. Since structural type and dynamic characteristics of the bridge differ from those of the representative concrete box bridge, dynamic behavior of the concerning steel bridge shows differences, but dynamic performances are all satisfying specification requirements.

  • In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. In this study, the fluctuation and frequency of pressure is measured when KHST(Korean High Speed Train) passes through tunnels in the Kyung-Bu high-speed line. And the characteristics of pressure fluctuation is analysed and formulated. The results of analysis are as follows. The train entering speed and fluctuation value are related. The pressure increasing is generated in proportion to train velocity at leading car. When two train is passing through the tunnel, the pressure value is $1.5\~2$ times higher than one train is passing. The damping ratio of pressure fluctuation is about $92\%$. The number of pressure fluctuation in a tunnel is 4 to 6 times. The result in this study would be a good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and the reliability index of body structure.

  • This paper introduces the combined test results of the traction system for KHST(Korean High Speed Train: hereafter refer to KHST). The main purpose of this combined test is to verify the performance of the traction system that is designed to operate up to maximum 350km/h speed. Combined test system consists of a traction transformer, two AC-DC PWM converters, a PWM Inverter, two traction motors and flywheel system. Flywheel system represents equivalent model of the train inertia. Also traction control system and MASCON Interfaces are included. Various kinds of experiments are performed to prove total traction system performance and detail waveforms are described

  • The study was carried out about the design of Power Car for Korean High Speed Train of maximum operating speed of 350㎞/h. At 350㎞/h, air resistance accounts for by far the greater part of overall resistance to forward motion. So, The Power Car's shape has to be largely determined by aerodynamic considerations. In a multiple unit such as the KHST, the two power cars assume the role of a locomotive. They accommodate all the machinery for providing traction. The train is controlled and monitored from power cars. The mechanical portion of KHST Power Car is the subject of this paper, which focuses on aerodynamics, mass balance, the car body and the layout of the equipment that is fitted into power car.

고속철도 강교량의 진동특성 분석 (Dynamic Characteristics of High-speed Railway Steel Bridges)

  • The dynamic behavior of two steel bridges crossed by the Korean High Speed Train(KHST) has been investigated experimentally and the results are compared with the specification requirement of BRDM and other typical PSC Box bridge's responses. The investigated bridges are a 2-girder steel bridge of 1@40m span length(E-Won Bridge), 2@50m span length (Ji-Tan Bridge), and a PSC Box girder bridge of 2@40m span length (Yeon-Jae Bridge). A set of experimental tests were performed during operation of KHST, and a number of accelerometers, LVDTs and ring-type displacement transducers were utilized for measurement of three kinds of dynamic responses (acceleration, deflection, and end-rotation angle). Measured responses show that the vertical deflections and end-rotation angles of the three bridges are all satisfying the spec. requirement with large margin, but it was also found acceleration responses which are very close or exceed the limit value. Most of the excessive acceleration responses were found when the passing velocity of the KHST is close to the critical velocity ($V_{cr}$) which causes resonance. No noticeable differences of dynamic responses due to the different materials(steel or concrete) could be found within these experimental results.

  • In this paper, an effective way to develop electrical system for Korean High-Speed Train(KHST) was introduced. High speed train is complicated electrical system that consists of many kinds of control devices, power supplies and communication systems. Due to reason of cost, safety and time for development, it is not so easy to test system performance after construct the high speed train in the test track. For the effective test and verification of system performance, from each electric system test to integration test for all interconnected electrical system are performed to reduce time and cost for development of high speed train.

한국형 고속전철 동력차 최종설계의 충돌안전도 분석 (Crashworthiness on the final design of the KHST power-car)

  • The most important technology to improve crashworthiness of high speed trains is to design their front structures to absorb crash energy easily. In this paper, crashworthy designs of the front structures in KTX and KHST are compared by numerical simulation under SNCF accident scenario. Furthermore, to evaluate their crashworthiness tinder a typical real situation, the power cars are simulated for the accident collided against a deformable dump truck of 15 tons at 110 kph. The front structure of KHST, finally designed, shows a good crashworthy characteristics. Finally, the impact strength of coupling components is evaluated by analyzing a consist of the front three KHST units under scenario of train-to-train collision at 30 kph.
