As the population over the age of 65 increases, the demand for nurses who care for this group also continues to grow. Well-prepared nurses who are knowledgeable and skilled for the elderly can be prepared through systematic gerontological nursing curricula. This study was carried out to identify the needs for gerontological nursing curricular contents. The subjects for this study were two participant groups the educators who teach gerontological nursing in three-year and four-year baccalaureate nursing programs, and the nurses who are working with the elderly in hospitals, community health centers, social welfare agencies, and community health practioner's posts. The major findings of the study are as follows : 1. The differences between actual contents and essential contents of the educators : Concerning the actual contents that is actually taught, the educators showed the highest scores on the demographics of older adults and the lowest scores on the cultural variations affecting health care. Regarding the essential contents, the educators showed the highest scores on the demographics and the lowest scores on the economics of aging. Aside from the demographics, all of the items were found to have significant differences between essential and actual contents. This implies that all the content areas except demographics should be emphasized. 2. The differences between actual knowledge and essential knowledge of the nurses : Concerning the nurses' actual knowledge, the nurses showed the highest scores on the common health problems and their treatment and the lowest scores on the politics of aging. Regarding the essential knowledge, nurses showed the highest scores on the chronic illness and common health problems and the lowest scores on their roles and functions. However, they thought all the items to be essential. All of the items were found to have significant differences between actual and essential knowledge. The nurses who studied gerontological nursing in their school years and after graduating had more knowledge. However, they felt more knowledge was needed. This implies that the nurses need more education in all content areas of gerontological nursing. 3. The differences between educators and nurses : Concerning the essential contents, the educators showed higher scores on the demographics and growth and development than the nurses. Whereas, the nurses showed higher scores on the cultural variations, long-term care, economics of aging, politics of aging, legal and ethical issues, and common health problems than the educators. 4. Activities of nursing care for the elderly : Most common activities were related to direct nursing care such as giving physical care, counseling/teaching clients, and assessing and planning care for the clients. Nurses thought that all the items were critical, but they showed relatively low scores on the following :'serve on multidisciplinary committee', 'preparing reports', 'evaluation of outcomes of care', 'determine policy for nursing service', 'set patient care standards', and 'participate in nursing research' The constraints in providing better nursing service were time constraints, administrative restraints, social restraints, and inadequate knowledge.
The purpose of this study is to examine the social gerontology studies in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society during 1980-2008 in terms of research topics, research methods, and theoretical trends. A total of 161 studies were analyzed; 27 studies in 1980's, 52 studies in 1990's, and 82 studies in 2000's. The major findings were as follows. First, the research topics were classified into five categories; 1) social change and social system (34 studies), 2) actual socio-condition (62 studies), 3) social problem and deviation (34 studies), 4) social culture (25 studies), and 5) gerontology study and gerontological theory (6 studies), and the major research trends and research results were examined. Second, in research methods, most of studies in 1980's were literature reviews and studies tended to be gradually expanded to quantitative research, but there were only eight quantitative researches. In statistical methods applied to the quantitative researches, thirty-six percent of the researches used basic statistical techniques, sixty-four percent advanced statistical techniques, and the basic ones were gradually replaced by the advanced ones. Third, most of the studies examined the social facts through relevant documents and statistics, or introduced the theories. So, only 12 studies (7.5%) were based on theories. Finally, the studies on various sociological research topics, qualitative studies, longitudinal studies, studies based on theories, and international cooperative studies, inter-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary studies were suggested for the future.
The purpose of this study was to investigate health status and health promoting behaviors of female elderly, and their needs for health-related services in an urban-rural combined city. The data were collected from the subjects registered in senior welfare center and senior citizens' clubs. A total of 119 women were participated in the survey. The results of the study are as follows; 1. The subjects perceived their health status relatively unhealthy. Their health promotion behavior score was 10.82 (range 0-17), and more than $60\%$ of them performed well in smoking and drinking control, regular meal. taking breakfast, and maintaining good relationship with others. 2. The most needed service was health screening followed by health risk assessment, disease diagnosis and treatment. 3. The most demanded education was on dementia prevention, followed by exercise, balanced diet, and maintenance of memorial and mental capability. 4. As the health interest and the health responsibility increased, the need for health service increased as well. Likewise, the health education needs increased as the health interest, health responsibility, and health promotion behavior increased. The results show that the health promotion programs for female elderly need to be focused, primarily, on health screening, health risk assessment, medical services for disease diagnosis and treatment, and health consulting and education. And health consulting and education programs should be designed to promote health interest and health responsibility of female elderly, change positively their attitude to aging, and include education on dementia prevention, exercise and nutrition management. Recommendations are discussed.
The purpose of the present study was to review psychological studies which have appeared in the "Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society". All told, 130 psychological papers have published for the last 30 years. Nineteen studies appeared in the 1980's, among which were 14 empirical ones and the remainders were review papers. In the 1990's were 51 papers published, and 49 ones were empirical and the rest of 2 literature review ones. In the 2000's did 56 papers appear, among which 56 ones were empirical and the rest of 4 literature review or theoretical ones. Research topics mainly examined about the aged were about mental health, life satisfaction and leasure, parent care and family relations, developmental change in cognition, and the old age general. After review of research trends for the last three decades, findings on each of research topics were examined. Finally, some limitations on the previous studies and future research directions were mentioned.
This study reviews advances in research made during the last decade in studies of aging families in Korea. Specifically, we provide a critical review of the theoretical directions and empirical findings of 87 research articles focused on aging families published in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society between 2008 and 2017. Topics and issues covered include: (a) diversity in family structures and households, (b) intergenerational relations, (c) intimate relations, and (d) family problems in later life. We found that while research applying theories and employing advanced methodologies has increased, embracing more diverse theories and ensuring nationally representative panel data from multi-reporters within families will enhance future research in aging and families. The authors conclude that more multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are needed in the field of family studies and gerontology in Korea.
The purpose of this study is to examine the major academic activities of the Korean Gerontological Society (KGS) during the last 40 years in comparison to changes in elderly policies in Korea and also academic trends in gerontology worldwide and the academic activities of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG); based on this analysis, this study aims to propose future directions for the academic progress of the KGS. We examined the major academic activities of the KGS by analyzing the contents of biannual conferences, international conferences, and irregular seminars and policy meetings, using conference booklets, KGS websites, and literature on KGS history. Second, we analyzed the academic activities of the KGS in comparison to changes in elderly policies in Korea, using databases of major newspapers and also the BigKinds search offered by the Korea Press Foundation. Third, the academic activities of the KGS were reviewed in comparison to those of the IAGG and the major aging policy agendas of key international organizations. The study results demonstrate that the KGS has been proactive in conducting diverse multi-disciplinary and international academic activities while promptly responding to both domestic and international changes in elderly policies. But some issues were not properly addressed due to the lack of diversity in its members, and it also should be noted that some issues were not discussed in depth for a sufficient length of time. Henceforth, as the leading academic organization in gerontology with a multi-disciplinary orientation in Korea, the KGS should continue to lead the development and evaluation of aging policies and also actively carry out diverse academic activities in collaboration with international academic societies and organizations.
The purpose of this study was to review papers published in the Journal of Korean Gerontological Society(1980-2008). For this purpose, the 55 articles on the educational gerontology were collected from the Journal. The published time, the number of authors, the author's positions, subjects, type of the researches, methods, the statistical techniques, topics of the educational gerontology, and so on were analyzed for this research. The results of this study were as follows: (1)The articles regarding on the educational gerontology took 7.14% in the Journal of Korean Gerontological Society. (2)The case of the quantitative researches for the elderly done by single author, performed without fund, through the questionnaire survey, and with more than two statistical techniques were the most common. Based on this researches, the organization of the major field or some courses on the educational gerontology, more research funds for the educational gerontology, and the efforts on the various research methods of themes and objects are recommended for better researches on the educational gerontology. Finally, we must expand our interests for the elderly's empowerment as a learner and the educational gerontology.
The purpose of this study is to review selected research articles on Social Welfare in Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society from 2008 to 2017 during 10 years periods, and suggest directions and implications for future research in the field of Gerontological Social Welfare. A total of 273 research articles were selected out of all published 655 articles in Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society in last 10 years. And relevant review articles were selected on the basis of cross checking among authors who majored in social welfare. Selected articles were analyzed for ecological system perspective, research subjects, and research methods. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, ecological system were classified into three categories: 1) macro system(52 articles); 2) mezzo system(120 articles); 3) micro system(101 articles). Second, the research subjects were classified into five categories: 1) social problem of the elderly(151 articles); 2) laws and policies(38 articles); 3) social welfare service for the elderly(28 articles); 4) day service and residential service(39 articles), 5) social participation for the elderly(31 articles). Third, the research methods were classified into 5 categories: 1) qualitative research(213 articles); 2) qualitative research(39 articles); 3) literature review(14 articles); 4) meta research(4 articles); 5) mixed research(3 articles). Finally, there are some important research directions and implications in the field of social welfare for the elderly. First, there should be more balance researches related to the ecological system perspectives in the field of social welfare for the elderly. Second, there should be more systematic researches to analyze critical problems and social issues related to the aging and senior citizens, and developing better interventions and social welfare policies for the elderly. Third, there should be more researches related to evidence based approaches, and utilizing various research methods to examine social problems and major issues for the elderly persons.
Issues related to the elderly have been recognized in Korea and nursing schalors have tried to study these issues. It is hard to say which the direction we, are going or have to go, since there has been little systemic effort to establish gerontological nursing field yet. Therefore, it is necessary to find out the trend and the guidelines of gerontolotical nursing studies for the future. Dissertation and published articles related to the elderly in the nursing field from 1991 to the Feburary of 1997 were are reviewed. Total 127 studies were analysed in terms of concept, design/methodology, and results, and the nature and issues of the gerontologic nursing studies in Korea were explored. The results are as follows : 1. There was no clear chronological definition of the elderly. 2. The most popular research design was an exploratory/descriptive study. 3. The major concepts studied were physical and mental health. 4. Among those studies using instruments which were developed and modified and/or translated by researchers, the reliability and validity were rarely reported. 5. Theory based studies were rare. We suggest the following issues for future studies : 1. The chronological and other criteria related to the defition of elderly is needed. 2. Physiopsychosocial characteristics of Korean elderly and their mangements in terms of intervention studies need to be conducted more systemically. 3. Social issues from the change of types and functions of family such as single elderly family need to be studied. 4. Participation in and collaborate with other disciplins are needed. 5. Development and test of instruments to measure phenomena or concepts is needed. 6. Macroscopic approach such as policy also needed. 7. Theory based studies are needed.
