Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the exocrine glands with associated lymphocytic infiltrates of the affected glands. Primary SS presents alone as xerostomia, keratoconjunctivitis sicca and patotid gland enlargement, secondary SS occurs in connection with other autoimmune disorder such as rheumatitoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or progressive systemic sclerosis. Among many other systemic complication, lymphoma is considered seriously. Patient with SS had a 44 times higher relative risk of lymphoma, and clinically identifiable lymphoma occurs in approximately 5% of patients with SS. So, patients with SS should be closely monitored. In dental office, diagnosis of SS is important in view of high risk of lymphoma. When a dentist diagnose and manage dry mouth, he or she should consider possibility of SS all the times and have knowledge of diagnostic criteria of SS.
The automated dental cavity detection program for a new concept intra-oral dental x-ray imaging device, an auxiliary diagnosis system, which is able to assist a dentist to identify dental caries in an early stage and to make an accurate diagnosis, was to be developed. The primary theory of the automatic dental cavity detection program is divided into two algorithms; one is an image segmentation skill to discriminate between a dental cavity and a normal tooth and the other is a computational method to analyze feature of an tooth image and take an advantage of it for detection of dental cavities. In the present study, it is, first, evaluated how accurately the DRLSE (Direct Regularized Level Set Evolution) method extracts demarcation surrounding the dental cavity. In order to evaluate the ability of the developed algorithm to automatically detect dental cavities, 7 tooth phantoms from incisor to molar were fabricated which contained a various form of cavities. Then, dental cavities in the tooth phantom images were analyzed with the developed algorithm. Except for two cavities whose contours were identified partially, the contours of 12 cavities were correctly discriminated by the automated dental caries detection program, which, consequently, proved the practical feasibility of the automatic dental lesion detection algorithm. However, an efficient and enhanced algorithm is required for its application to the actual dental diagnosis since shapes or conditions of the dental caries are different between individuals and complicated. In the future, the automatic dental cavity detection system will be improved adding pattern recognition or machine learning based algorithm which can deal with information of tooth status.
Chemical burn on the oral mucosa is caused by contact with various chemical products and manifests with localized mucositis, keratotic white lesions, bleeding, and painful tissue surface due to the coagulation of the tissue. Policresulen ($Albothyl^{(R)}$) is a topical antiseptic, commonly used over-the-counter drug for vaginitis, thrush and stomatitis. This drug is highly acidic with pH 0.6, and can act as a strong corrosive agent to oral mucosa. When inadvertently used in oral cavity, it may cause chemical burns of oral mucosa, resulting necrosis and bleeding surface resembling to erythema multifome. A 56 years old female patient presented with the chief complaints of painful ulcerations on the tongue, the upper and lower lips. On intraoral examination, an erythromatous, erosive or ulcerative surface covered with inflammatory exudates or bleeding crust is observed on the anterior half of the tongue and the upper and lower lips. She has occasionally applied the policresulen solution topically on the tongue to relieve pain from recurrent focal glossitis for about 10 years. In this time she applied it broadly and repeatedly to the tongue, the upper and lower lips for the purpose of pain relief by herself without instruction by physician or dentist. After cessation of policresulen application, the oral mucosa was rapidly recovered with use of topical steroids. In 2 weeks the lesions subsided completely. In summary, inadvertent use of $Albothyl^{(R)}$ on oral mucosa may result in chemical burn, causing mucosal erosion, ulceration and inflammation. It can be recovered by topical use of corticosteroid for 2 weeks after cessation of using $Albothyl^{(R)}$.
The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) bleaching agent on the changes in physical and chemical characteristics of tooth. The bleached teeth showed an apparent color changes. The whiteness increased linearly within the tested period as the period of bleaching increased. The microhardness between bleached groups after bleaching showed any statistically significant difference according to the paried t-test. The bleached enamel surface showed any apparent morphological changes compared to the enamel which was stored in distilled water only. The difference of the total mineral contents for the distilled water and hydrogen peroxide did not show statistical significance. These results demonstrated that bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide were adversely affects application time of experimental group and may confirm the safety of using these agents for a short time in dentist-monitored bleaching.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between caries experience, Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence-Digital (QLF-D) redings and new caries activity test (Cariview) results in preschool children. Fifty-seven healthy kindergarten children (male 28, female 29) were participated this study. The calibrated dentist investigated the caries experience of children and new caries activity test. Cariview samples were incubated in the activated medium at $37^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. All QLF-D taking and readings were performed by one experienced and trained operator under identical conditions in a dental unit chair located in a darkened room. Analysis range was limited to the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. QLF-D redings (white spot and dental plaque) were analysed using QLF system. The dft index had a relatively high correlation with the QLF-D redings (white spot: r=0.617, simple plaque score: r=0.500) (p<0.01). Also, there was significant correlation between dft index and the Cariview score (r=0.286) (p<0.05). However, the Cariview score had no significant correlation between dt index and ft index (p>0.05). QLF-D can be evaluated objectively the initial caries lesions and dental plaque correlated with caries experience. Therefore, QLF-D will be useful to the study of caries prediction.
The study objected to the 120 persons out of 360 persons who have registered under the association of the dental technicians in Pusan to grasp contents about improvement of life long education of the present day of November, 1987, and its results, which we have acquired by this study were as follows : 1. A sense of satisfaction toward the system of life long education appeared as unsatisfaction and its unsatisfaction decreased from the rate of member's attendance or exam. marks, the contents of education, and place of education. 2. The problem of the exam. mark which derived by the presence by the substitute appeared which 46.7 percent(56 persons), lack of opportunity for the recompletion at branch association appeared which 19.2%(23 persons), given 4. exam. marks at the over all scientific contest was appeared 14.2 percent(17 persons), relation which legal treatment when ones didn't completed exam. mark was appeared 10.8 percent(13 persons) and lastly, appeared 8.3 percent (10 persons) with time of delivery of the exam mark card. 3. The frequency of the opening for the life long education which related with the rate of members attendance was fixed as nowadays two times per annually, but they perferred the opening per academic blanch once out of the firest half year and the latter half of the year and, they liked the openings at the first week or second week and preferred the holding on saturdays and sundays. 4. The subject of the life long education have appeared the opinion that the thesis was lop-sided toward the allocation of time schedule of lecture appeared the opinion of which they perferred the rate of an hour of cultural subject and two hours of major studies, and invitation for an instructor they preferred one dentist, one member, one dean for the cultural subject, and there are lots of opinions which they wished display of materials. 5. A sence of satisfaction about the place they perferred was decreased such as ; an auditorium concerned of the colleges was 46.7 Percent(56 Persons), hotels 26.7 Percent(32 Persons), an auditorium of the general hospital 20 percent(24 persons) 6. The purpose of this study was to examine preference for dental hygienists. The subjects in this study were 228 employees in general hospitals located in the region of Busan, on whom a survey was conducted in May and June, 2009. The findings of the study were as follows: As for top priority of dental hygienists' duties, providing assistance for dentist treatment ranked first(28.2%), followed by scaling(23.2%) and preventive duties(20.6%). Concerning a favorable image of a dental hygienist, a cheerful look was most preferred(61.4%), followed by a clean-cut look (32.9%), a refined look (3.5%) and an intellectual look (2.2%). Among the subjects, married respondents exhibited a greater liking for a cheerful look, and the gap between them and the unmarried subjects was statistically significant($x^2=8.11$, p<.05). In terms of uniform preference, a two-piece suit with pants was most favored(76.3%). Female respondents showed a greater preference for a two-piece suit with pants, and the gap between them and the male respondents was statistically significant($x^2=41.09$, p<.001). As for major qualifications, professional knowledge was most valued (49.1%), followed by integrity/responsibility(23.2%), friendliness(22.4%), and a great personality/being well-cultivated(5.3%). Employees who were in their 40s and up placed more importance on integrity and responsibility, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant($x^2=20.62$, p<.01).
The purpose of this study was to identify knowledge awareness, and performance of dentist and dental staff regarding protection of patient's personal information. In addition, this research was conducted to highlight the importance of protection of patient's personal information and provide a guideline for establishing measures in this regard. A survey was conducted on 506 dentists or dental staff working in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces. The data was analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, $x^2$, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Scheffe test, using the PASW Statistics ver. 18.0 program. We found that the participants' knowledge and perception of the protection of patient's personal information were relatively low compared to those of other professionals. Such knowledge and perception were especially and significantly low in dental hygienists. In addition, a high level of knowledge and awareness showed a positive correlation with the extent of performance. Therefore, it is important that dentists and dental staff are aware of issues regarding the protection of patients' personal information. For this purpose, educational and training programs on such issues appear essential.
This purpose of this study was to analysis the relation of awareness and practices of oral health promotion. The subjects in this study were 133 workers who worked in Seoul, Gyeonggi province, and were at the age of 20 and up. The survey was conducted from January 16 to March 31, 2012. The collected data is statistically analyzed by SPSS. For the level oral health awareness of industrial workers, the awareness of prevention of tooth decay and periodontal disease was high, but that of necessity of oral hygiene supplies other than tooth brushing was low. For the level of oral health care practice, they showed the highest awareness for the importance of cleaning a tongue when brushing teeth, and the lowest for the importance of dental care. For oral health awareness according to the general properties, workers with average income of 2~3 million one showed higher oral health awareness than others. For oral health care practice, those who brush their teeth more than 3 times a day and who have visited the dentist during the last year had higher oral health care practice than others. For oral health awareness according to the level of interest in oral health and the status of oral health of the industrial workers, those who have higher interest in oral health turned out to have higher oral health awareness. The relation between oral health awareness and oral health care practice of the industrial workers showed a positive correlation, which indicates that the higher oral health awareness is, the higher oral health care practice is.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tobacco cessation activities of the dental staffs in Wonju city. All 137 subjects were surveyed by structured questionnaire with convenience sampling. The distribution and correlation of attitude, behavior, and intervention were evaluated by both frequency test and ANOVA test. 75.2% of total subjects responded that the dental staff should give a model through prohibition of smoking and 66.5% responded that tobacco cessation activities should be responsibility of the dental staff. Tobacco cessation counsel was performed by little but with positive attitude. Advice method of tobacco cessation was used to counsel on tobacco cessation (68.6%). The dentists (48.2%) and dental hygienists (23.4%) were responded adequate for the tobacco cessation counselor, however, it was shown that the dentist had lower level of attitude about tobacco cessation than dental hygienist (p<0.01). The dental staff needs to participate in the tobacco cessation counseling program more regularly and actively. In order for the dental staffs gets the counsel effectively and intervene with tobacco cessation, it is essential that the education of tobacco cessation is integrated in dental school. Furthermore, it is necessary for the dental staffs to take continuing education for more effective understanding of tobacco cessation.
