  • Some Korean marine hvdroids of the families Sphaerocorynidae, Eudendriidae, Haleciidae and Lafoeidae were observed based on the external features. Thev were collected from the coasts and islands of Korea during the years 1971-1990 by the author and others. As a result12 species and subspecies are identified, of which 6 species: Sphaerocowne bedoti, Eudendrium insigne, Eudendrium cumeum, Hydrodendron gordineri, Acwptolaria confena austrolis and Crammaria obi'etinQ tuned out to be new to the Korean fauna, which are redescribed briefly. For already known species in Korean fauna, the materials examined for this work and previous rdcore given, and not examined but already known species in Korean waters the only previous records are given for definition of the hydroid taxa. So that the Korean hvdroids of four families identified so far consist of ten genera and 19 species.

  • Two species of mysid, Nipponomysis fusca (Ii, 1936) and N. tenuiculus (Ii, 1940), are newly recorded in Korean fauna. These two species were collected using a light or a bait trap from all coasts of the Korean peninsula. The genus Nipponomysis can be distinguished from allied genus by the following morphological characteristics: third to eighth thoracic endopods with carpopropodus divided into five to six subsegments compared to three subsegments, and anterior four pairs of pleopod in female subequal in length and fifth pair elongated. Nipponomysis fusca is characterized by its acute rostral plate and armature of telson, and N. tenuiculus differs from other species by the number of spine in ventral statocyst region and the shape of the fourth pleopod in male. Herein, we present detailed descriptions of two species from Korean waters with illustrations of morphology. In addition, an identification key to the Korean species of the genus is provided.

  • Four Rhizosolenia species of marine diatom were appeared at 30 sites in Korean coastal waters from September 2008 to February 2010. The cell shape, diameter, length of pervalvar axis, external process, segment and areolation characters of the species were examined. All four species were cylindrically shaped, but the external processes differed. Segment striations were regularly straight, and velum showed hexagonal, circular pore and narrow slit. Rhizosolenia formosa and R. hyalina were only occurred in September 2008 from the Yellow Sea, R. bergonii was appeared throughout the year from Korea Strait and Yangyang coasts, and R. setigera was abundantly showed in all seasons from all site. R. formosa is a newly recorded species in Korean coastal waters.

  • The morphology of molluscan egg capsule is generally regarded as being species specific (Turner, 1992), and form and structure of the egg capsule reflect the degree of anatomical complexity of the reproductive organs (Fretter & Hian, 1984). Ceratostoma rorifluum and Ocinebrellus inornatum are common and widespread muricid species found throughout the Korean rocky and boulder shores, and Neptunnea constricta is found frequently from continental shelf of the eastern sea of Korea. In spite of their predominance along the Korean coasts, morphology of their eggs and egg capsules is unknown so far. The purpose of the present study, therefore, is to provide descriptions and illustrations for identifying egg capsules of the foregoing 3 stenoglossan gastropod species. (omitted)

  • The taxonomic revision of the family Scorpaenidae was conducted based on the specimens collected from the coasts of the Korean Peninsula from 1989 to 1992. The scorpionfishes of Korea are composed of 30 species in 8 genera, and the keys to species and genera are provided with svnonvms and their distributions. Four species newly reported from Korea are redescribed and figured: Sebastiscus tenius (Barsukov et Chen), Sebastes steindachneri Hilgendorf, S. minor Barsukov and S. zonatus Chen et Barsukov. It is noted that the genus Sebastes comprise 18 species in Korean waters without endemics. Most species of the Korean scorrionfishes are shared with Japanese and Taiwanese faunas including temperate and tropical scorpionfishes. Most Sebastes species are recognized as temperate elements but other genera of this family are regarded as tropical elements.

  • A hesionid species, Leocratides kimuraorum Jimi, Tanaka and Kajihara, 2017 is newly reported from the sublittoral zones (100 m depth) of the Korean coasts. This species is characterized by lateral antennae as long as the palps, peristomial membrane without papillose, peristomial dorsolateral tubercles with two round marginal lobes, and pharyngeal with terminal papillae. The intra-specific genetic distance among the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) sequences of L. kimuraorum specimens from Japan (type locality) and Korea (this study) was in the range of 0.002-0.005. The inter-specific genetic distance between L. kimuraorum and other hesionid species were 0.166-0.307. The present study is the first record of Leocratides species in Korean fauna. This paper also provides a morphological description and photographs of L. kimuraorum, with partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI based on Korean specimens.

  • The spionid polychaete Scolelepis geniculata, originally described in Japan, is newly recorded in the Korean fauna. Specimens collected from the eastern and southern coasts of Korea between May 1999 and October 2002, stored in the invertebrate collection of the National Institute of Biological Resources, were examined based on their morphology. Scolelepis geniculata is morphologically most similar to S. yamaguchii from Japan and Korea but is distinguished by having branchiae separated from the notopodial lamellae in posterior chaetigers and notopodial prechaetal lamellae digitiform in anterior chaetigers instead of subtriangular. A detailed morphological description of S. geniculate, and an amended identification key to all Korean Scolelepis species is provided.

  • Polygordiidae is recorded as a new record in the Korean fauna. Twenty-three specimens of Polygordius pacificus were collected from the low intertidal zone with coarse sandy bottom on the eastern coasts of Korea. Morphologically, there was no doubt that the specimens are close to the holotype of P. pacificus, particularly due to the presence of elongated and longitudinal pygidial glands, and the length to width ratio. The prostomium of the Korean specimens have a rounded shape that is similar to subsequent research using scanning electron microscope. The DNA sequence comparison of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) between Korean and Japanese population supports the identification of present specimens.

  • Miami Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model is applied to the East Sea to estimate the renewal time of the upper Intermediate Water The model gives about 10 years of renewal time. Extrapolating this result to the whole water mass below, including the upper Intermediate Water, leads to about 81.4 years of renewal time, which is quite comparable to that obtained by Kim and Kim (1997) based on the recent observations. Deep winter mixing occurs in the north of the basin. The areas of the largest water mass conversion, from the upper mixed to the intermediate below, are along the periphery of the deep mixing zone. Large portion of the renewed Intermediate Water then advects along the Korean and Japanese coasts. It is concluded that the high-oxygen content Intermediate Water found off the Korean coast (Kim and Chung, 1984) is in part locally formed but mostly advected from the deep mixing zone.
