With increasing interest in environmental issues and the quality of surface water becoming inadequate for water supply, the Korean government has launched a groundwater development policy to satisfy the demand for clean water. To drive this policy effectively, it is essential to guarantee the accuracy of sustainable groundwater yield and groundwater use amount. In this study, groundwater use was monitored over several years at various locations in Korea (32 cities/counties in 5 provinces) to obtain accurate groundwater use data. Statistical analysis of the results was performed as a method for estimating rational groundwater use. For the case of groundwater use for living purposes, we classified the cities/counties into three regional types (urban, rural, and urban-rural complex) and divided the groundwater facilities into five types (domestic use, apartment housing, small-scale water supply, schools, and businesses) according to use. For the case of agricultural use, we defined three regional types based on rainfall intensity (average rainfall, below-average rainfall, and above-average rainfall) and the facilities into six types (rice farming, dry-field farming, floriculture, livestock-cows, livestock-pigs, and livestock-chickens). Finally, we developed groundwater-use estimation equations for each region and use type, using cluster analysis and regression model analysis of the monitoring data. The results will enhance the reliability of national groundwater statistics.

In order to evaluate the possible environmental lead hazard in children's playground and to test the practicability of field portable x-ray fluorescence(FPXRF) for environmental lead measurement, authors investigated lead concentration of lead-based paint on the surface of children's playing equipments in the playground of 13 apartments using FPXRF at the site in city A, Choongnam province. 93 spots were determined surface lead concentrations 3 times each using a FPXRF. Out of 93 spots, 83 spots (92%) were revealed to have lead in paint and mean concentration was $1.12{\pm}1.76mg/cm^2$. The mean concentration of lead on the surface of playing equipments at the apartments near the main street was $1.20mg/cm^2$ and higher than those at the apartments far away from the main street($0.81mg/cm^2$)(p<0.05). The mean concentration of lead on the surface of playing equipments painted with yellow color was $3.23mg/cm^2$ and the highest among all colors, whereas equipment painted white color was non-detectable. PVC and etc materials for construction of playing equipment showed higher surface lead concentration than other materials. The result suggests that it is necessary to be taken caution of the lead exposure in the playground of apartment and it should be taken any kind of confirmative action to prevent unwanted lead exposure from surface lead source of playing equipment. Authors found that FPXRF was very reliable and useful for field measurement to detect lead on the painted surface.
In this study, the changes of the sunshine environment due to the construction of buildings were analyzed by season. Using a geographic information system (GIS) data, the topography and the buildings were constructed around Pukyong National University (PKNU) in Busan. The numerical model was performed for a week in each season, before and after the construction of buildings. Even before the construction of the high-rise building complex, the area of sunshine block is wide due to the apartment complex located in the southeast of the PKNU campus and the mountain in the south. After the construction, the sunshine-blocked area became wider after the sunrise and before the sunset. The area of sunshine block after 1 hour at sunrise increased by 1.60%, 1.50%, 1.58% and 1.36% in the vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice, respectively. The building complex in the east (south) of the PKNU campus made shadow in more than 1,000 m (750 m) toward the west (east) just before the sunrise (sunset). Especially, the sunshine duration in PKNU campus decreased by 46.61%, 22.75%, 58.56%, and 11.31% in the vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice, respectively. The analysis of the sunshine duration for a dormitory building showed that the construction of the building complex in the south of the PKNU campus reduced the sunshine area of the western (southern) wall of the dormitory by 30.91% (49.45%) for a winter week.

In conclusion. the aim of this paper is to suggest modeling based on guidelines for evaluating LOS of mixed traffic street in all traffic modes. It is estimated that this will be influencing indicates for improving pedestrian environment, and Planning mixed traffic street in future.
The purpose of this study is to identify more types of residents in medium-sized apartments in Seoul by lifestyle that has been used as a variable of space planning and to investigate and present bathroom design appropriate for characteristics of each resident type. The article examines the general characteristics, lifestyle types, and preference for the bathroom design. A total of 642 samples, acquired via internet survey, were analyzed with the statistical computer program SPSS PC+ window version 16.0. The conclusion of the article are as follows: 1) The lifestyle of users living in medium-sized apartments are categorized into 4 types: trend seeking, aesthetic seeking, family seeking, information seeking types. 2) The preference for the bathroom design of trend seeking type, the toilet is a bidet-builtin type and the washstand is a semi-counter type and the bathtub is a spa type and the shower booth is a bathtub-extending type. The storage closet is a upper-fixed type with two sides, the finishing materials are tiles and PVC monorium, and light built in a wall. 3) The preference for the bathroom design of aesthetic seeking type, the toilet is a bidet-builtin type and the washstand is a semi-counter type and the bathtub is a whirlpool type and the shower booth is a steam-sauna type. The storage closet is a upper-fixed with one side and opened closet, the finishing materials are tiles. 4) The preference for the bathroom design of family seeking type, the toilet is a bidet-builtin type and the washstand is a stand type and the bathtub is a reclamation type and the shower booth is a partition type. The results of this study may be used as basic data in planning bathroom design for housing supply for housing suppliers, and used as significant information for residents to identify their own types that can be referred when they select apartments to live in.
Many of penthouse apartments began to be built and distributed in Korea from the 2000s. However, we have a transformed definition from the international concept of penthouse. It seems that the penthouse apartments in Korea have a confined definition as a luxury and privileged house-we often find it out from advertisements of newly built apartments. In this thesis, therefore, it needs to make a clear and substantial definition of penthouse. And on the base of this definition, this study is intended to analyze planes of penthouse apartments which are distributed recently. It is in order to find out positive aspects of penthouse apartments and to make practical application of this analysis. The process of this study for plane-planning is as follows. Firstly, it is investigated and analyzed that external factors that have an effect on plane-planning such as locations and types of penthouse apartments. Secondly, an interior of penthouse apartments are divided into a private, public and outward area. And properties of each area through this research show the way of division and arrangement of plane. Thirdly, methods of connection between spaces is analyzed on the base of results of research for the way of partition. Finally, specific characters of penthouse apartments planning is derived from synthesis of research. In conclusion, analysis of plane-planning of penthouse apartments is summarized as follows. The majority of penthouse apartments is arranged to small portions of households and on higher stories in apartment which is situated around Han River or public parks. These external factors influence the plane-planning in both the interior and exterior way. For the exterior planning in space, it becomes important to design bays as many as possible in contact with outside in order to satisfy demands for fine prospects. It is also important to plan extra places naturally such as a terrace in order to provide virtual grounding. In the interior planning, a large size of interior induces to develop space for linking between each area, such as corridors or extra rooms. This makes it possible that the private area is linked to each other, at the same time it has its own distinctiveness according to its usage.

This study focuses on the reconstruction of buffer greens which were installed to reduce environmental effects on roadsides constructed in the 1980s, in order to supplement various urban green functions. The subjects were buffer greens installed along the Songpadaero and Nambusunwhanro in Songpa-gu. Planting was suggesting to strengthen the buffer, landscape, shading and ecological function according to the use of the buffer green surroundings. The surroundings of the green axis subjects are high-rise apartment areas, neighboring commercial areas, commercial working areas, transportation facility areas, urban support facility areas, schools, parks, etc. However, the structure of the buffer greens were uniformed with Plantanus occidentalis and Ginkgo biloba and Zelkova serrata in the canopy layer and with Forsythia koreana and Ligustrum obtusifoliumin the shrub layer in lineal or alternate order, functioning only as buffer space. Therefore, the buffer greens need to be reconstructed, supplementing various functions according to land use, in order to improve the pedestrian walk area in terms of landscape and use of greens. In line with that, the planting improvement plans according to the land use patterns, and physical and ecological structure were classified into buffer and landscape, landscape and buffer, buffer and shading, and buffer and ecological function. In addition, improving planting function, species and facilities are suggested.

This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of arthritis and to identify subgroups with high prevalence rates of arthritis. Study subjects were 18,406 Korean adults aged 19 and more from the 4th (2007-2009) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys data. Annual self-reported prevalence and its rate ratios by demographic and behavioral factors were calculated using SAS 9.2 with survey procedure. The result was as follows. The crude prevalence of arthritis was 11.7% (osteoarthritis 10.2% and rheumatoid arthritis 1.7%). The prevalence was increased by age strata (2.4% in 19-44 aged, 16.4% in 45-64, 38.3% in 65 and more). After adjusting for age, we found the subgroups with high prevalence: older people, women, residents in non-apartment area, separated and divorced people, people with low education, people with several occupations (agricultural and fishery workers, elementary occupations, and unemployed), people with low household incomes, people with medical aid, and people with higher BMI. Those subgroups may be target populations in community health programs to control the disability from arthritis.

An ecological survey of food and nutrition was conducted in April and May, among 278 children, 6 to 12 years old, of the Youido elementary school, which offers no school lunch program, and is situated in Youido delta of Han River side of Seoul, known as the location of one of the socioeconomically high groups; Eighteen percent and 18.3% of subjects were proven to be overweight and obese, respectively. With regard to frequency of skipping breakfast, 28.4% of the subjects skipped breakfast often and 2.5% of subjects skipped breakfast every morning. Obese children showed good appetite and the time consumed for eating was shorter than those of normal or overweight children. Most serious anxiety among the mothers for those children was food habit of `eating rapidly' and `overeating'. Another striking observation was that 14.4% of the subjects ate only one side-dish with boiled rice, and such a pattern was more often found in the normal or slim group. Most of the subjects had their snacks after being back in home from school. Thirty-one percent of the children had snacks when they felt hungry, 69% had snacks for various reasons such as `habitually', `for unwinding', and `mother gives me snacks'. Thirty-eight percent of the boys and 19% of the girls had physical exercise everyday and overweight and obese children got exercise more frequently. But the time consumed for exercise was much more shorter than that of normal subjects. Most of the children liked fruits, meats, and biscuit, in contrast, lowest preferency was for vegetables, fermented fish products, and boiled rice mixed with other grains. Obese children experienced more kinds of food than normal or slim group. The study found that habits of overeating due to good appetite and eating rapidly were recognized as one of dominant reasons causing obesity among children. On the other hand, serious dietary problem of children of normal or slim group was eating less variety of food. Active nutrition education for both children and mothers will be recommended with joint participation of teachers.

This paper is to analyze citizens' consciousness on urban changes, especially focusing on changes in urban environment, spatial structure, and urban planning, of large cities in S. Korea, that is, Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, and Kwangju in the 1990s. Some significant points can be described as follows. First. The most important factor influencing on the change of urban spatial structure was the expansion of residential area inner and outside of cities promoted by the traditional construction industry, and not development of high-tech industries and their complex or location of multi-national firms which can be emphasized as major factors of new urbanization process of global cities. Secondly, citizens seem to have experienced improvement and deterioration of urban environment simultaneously, emphasizing regulatory environmental policy on the one hand, and recognize the necessity of sustainable urban development within given environmental capacity and restoration of destructed and polluted environment of cities. Thirdly, the building boom of new apartment complex was a major driving force of changing urban spatial structure, but it could neither alleviate a residential gap between the poor and the rich areas nor a relief of traffic congestion. Finally, the urban policy in general was felt somewhat improved by citizens, but not in sectoral details.
