Korea multi-purpose satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite scheduled to be launched in 2010. To satisfy the precision orbit determination (POD) requirement for a high resolution synthetic aperture radar image of KOMPSAT-5, KOMPSAT-5 has atmosphere occultation POD (AOPOD) system which consists of a space-borne dual frequency global positioning system (GPS) receiver and a laser retro reflector array. A space-borne dual frequency GPS receiver on a LEO satellite provides position data for the POD and radio occultation data for scientific applications. This paper describes an overview of AOPOD system and operation concepts of the radio occultation mission in KOMPSAT-5. We showed AOPOD system satisfies the requirements of KOMPSAT-5 in performance and stability.
The KOMPSAT-1(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1) is the first multi-purpose satellite funded by Korean government for the purpose of remote sensing and scientific data gathering in KOREA. It has successfully achieved its own mission since Dec. 21, 1999. This paper provides an overview of the KOMPSAT-1 missions and addresses the nominal mission planning and operation flow. This paper also describes the routine operational orbit determination and orbit prediction process using GPS navigation solution data. Meanwhile, some problems due to inexperience of the multiple mission operations during LEOP(Launch & Early Orbit Phase) and early normal mission were investigated. Then, resolutions that include the development of new mission planning tool are addressed. The KOMPSAT-1´s missions become more complicated rather than its Initially designed ones. In order to accomplish ...

Establishment of systematic platform is needed for technological progress of receiving of satellite image data with high quality and processing system for product generation and operation related with direct receiving system for satellite from abroad. Besides, it's necessary to develop the integrated data processing system to prohibit similar functions on developing (or being developed) for KOMPSAT-3, KOMPSAT-5 and to operate system efficiently. Therefore, conceptual design of the integrated data processing system is performed considering commercialization of KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) series based on KOMPSAT-2 IRPE on operation in this paper.
As the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-I (KOMPSAT-1) satellite can roll tilt up to $\pm$45$^{\circ}$, we have analyzed some KOMPSAT-1 EOC images taken at different tilt angles for this study. The required ground coordinates for bundle adjustment and geometric accuracy are obtained from the digital map produced by the National Geography Institution, at a scale of 1:5,000. Followings are the steps taken for the tilting angle of KOMPSAT-1 to be present in the evaluation of geometric accuracy of each different stereo image data: Firstly, as the tilting angle is different in each image, the characteristic of satellite dynamic must be determined by the sensor modeling. Then the best sensor modeling equation should be determined. The result of this research, the difference between the RMSE values of individual stereo images is mainly due to quality of image and ground coordinates instead of tilt angle. The bundle adjustment using three KOMPSAT-1 stereo pairs, first degree of polynomials for modeling the satellite position, were sufficient.
Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is the first satellite in Korea that provides 1 m resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Precise orbit determination (POD) using a dual-frequency IGOR receiver data is performed to conduct high-resolution SAR images. We suggest orbit determination strategies based on a differential GPS technique. Double-differenced phase observations are sampled every 30 seconds. A dynamic model approach using an estimation of general empirical acceleration every 6 minutes through a batch least-squares estimator is applied. The orbit accuracy is validated using real data from GRACE and KOMPSAT-2 as well as simulated KOMPSAT-5 data. The POD results using GRACE satellite are adjusted through satellite laser ranging data and compared with publicly available reference orbit data. Operational orbit determination satisfies 5 m root sum square (RSS) in one sigma, and POD meets the orbit accuracy requirements of less than 20 cm and 0.003 cm/s RSS in position and velocity, respectively.

A synthetic aperture radar(SAR) satellite is more effective than an optical satellite for target analysis because an SAR satellite can provide two-dimensional electromagnetic scattering distribution of a target during all-weather and day-and-night operations. To conduct target analysis while considering the earth observation interval of an SAR satellite, observing a specific area as wide as possible would be advantageous. However, wider the observation area, worse is the resolution of the associated SAR satellite image. Although conventional methods for improving the resolution of radar images can be employed for addressing this issue, few studies have been conducted for improving the resolution of SAR satellite images and analyzing the performance. Hence, in this study, the applicability of conventional methods to SAR satellite images is investigated. SAR target detection was first applied to Korea Multipurpose Satellite-5(KOMPSAT-5) SAR images provided by Korea Aerospace Research Institute for extracting target responses. Extrapolation, RELAX, and MUSIC algorithms were subsequently applied to the target responses for improving the resolution, and the corresponding performance was thereby analyzed.
The ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring f the study of biological oceanography. OSMI performs solar and dark calibrations for on-orbit instrument calibration. The purpose of the solar calibration is to monitor the degradation of imaging performance for each pixel of 6 spectral bands and to correct the degradation effect on OSMI image during the ground station date processing. The design, the operation concept, and the radiometric characteristics of the solar calibration are investigated. A linear model of image response and a solar calibration radiance model are proposed to study the instrument characteristics using the solar calibration data. The performance of spectral responsivity and spatial response uniformity. The first solar calibration data and the analysis results are important references for further study on the on-orbit stability of OSMI response during its lifetime.
The overseas calibration sites such as Mongolia used for Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-5 or K5), have a disadvantage in that maintenance and repair costs are high and immediate response is difficult when an unexpected problem occurs. Accordingly, the necessity of establishing a domestic SAR calibration site was suggested, but the progress of related research is insignificant. In this paper, we investigated what conditions should be satisfied in terms of backscattering characteristics to construct a site for SAR satellite image quality evaluation and calibration. First of all, it was selected first by applying general indicators such as accessibility and availability among places recommended as satellite image calibration candidate sitesin Korea. Next, three places, site A (Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do), site B (Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do), and site C (Daedeok Research Complex, Daejeon), were selected as the final candidates because they are relatively wide and easy to install AT or CR. Site A, located in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, was best considered in terms of slope measurements, minimum site area to obtain ISLR, uniformity of DN values and backscatter coefficients, interference by strong reflectors, and backscatter clutter level.

Insufficient problem about resource of satellite network frequency and orbit was seriously issued, because commercialization of a satellite has been successfully achieved since 1980s. Therefore, each countries execute an advantageous policy to them for guarantying and protecting satellite network resource and perform study for preoccupying new satellite network resource. Understanding and insight of policy about occupying satellite network resource of world each countries are landmark of satellite network task. In this paper, policies of Japan, Russia and China located around Korea are especially described. Also, in this paper, the administration organization of Japan, Russia and China which are to manage satellite network is described. The KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) secured satellite network frequency and orbit of the KOMPSAT(KOrea Multi Purpose SATellite)-1 and the KOMPSAT-2 and is also going to register satellite network of the KOMPSAT-3 and the KOMPSAT-5. When satellite network coordination with nearby three countries will be needed, understanding of political policy and organization let the Korea acquire coordination agreement of the other administration.
