  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a customized health promotion program (CHPP) on depression, cognitive functioning, and physical health of elderly women living alone in the community. Methods: A randomized comparison of pre-and post-test design was used with 62 participants assigned to either an intervention (n=32 in seven clusters) or a control group (n=30 in seven clusters) in 14 areas of a town. The final sample included 30 intervention participants who completed the CHPP for 10 weeks, and 26 control participants. The intervention group participated in the CHPP weekly; they were provided with instructions about coping with their chronic illnesses, lifestyle modification, risk management, providing emotional support to each other, and floor-seated exercise, which they were encouraged to do three times a week in their homes. Results: Significant group differences were found in depression (U=48.50, p<.001), cognitive functioning (U=2.50, p<.001), left arm flexibility (U=251.50, p=.023), right arm flexibility (U=225.00, p=.007), static balance (U=237.00, p=.012), and gait ability (U=190.50, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in bothgrip strength and muscle mass between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings indicate that CHPP was overall effective at improving depression, cognitive functioning, and physical functioning of elderly women living alone, and could therefore be considered a positive program for community-dwelling elderly women living alone.

  • The range of motion (ROM) of ankle dorsiflexion in older women was associated with gait abnormalities and the risk of falls. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-stretching exercise on the flexibility of the plantar flexors of the ankle and the characteristics of gait in healthy elderly women. Fifteen participants were assigned randomly into an exercise (n=8) or control (n=7) group. The exercise group attended a self-stretching program approximately 30 minutes for 3 days per week for 4 weeks. The active ankle dorsiflexion ROM and gait measurements were taken prior to beginning the stretching program and 1 day after the last stretching day. Results showed that the active ankle dorsiflexion ROM was significantly increased in the exercise group than in the control group after the stretching program (p<.05). However, gait parameters, including gait speed, cadence, and stride length were not significantly different between the two groups (p>.05). The results suggest that a 4-week self-stretching program is capable of provoking a significant increase in ankle dorsiflexion ROM in elderly, community-dwelling women. Additional research is needed to investigate the effect of gait-specific exercise combined with stretching exercise on gait ability.

  • This study analyzed body shape changes over time by comparing Size Korea's data on 50-84-year-old women from 2020 to 2021 with the same data from 2003 to 2004. In addition, the subjects of these data were divided into drop-types and also upper-body-drop-types with the body measurements for each type compared. The results showed that elderly women had grown 3-4 cm taller over the last 20 years, but the length of 'neck shoulder point to breast point' had become shorter; the bust and waist circumferences were smaller, but the thigh circumference was larger. In the body-drop type, the bust circumference, waist circumference, and waist circumference(Omphalion) increased by about 4-6cm in the order of N-type < H-type < Y-type indicating that the sideline slope of the torso must be differentiated. The upper-body-drop-type showed a 1-cm difference in height and bust circumference, but a 4 to 5-cm difference in waist circumference. In addition, thick-waist subjects aged 70 or older were classified into separate body types with the results showing that their waist circumference was greater than their breast circumference, signifying the need for different top patterns.

  • This study aimed to identify and compare variables affecting life satisfaction of older women by focusing on household types and poverty levels. The study used data from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging administered by the Korea Labor Institute in 2006. The data for 1,017 older women ages over 65 including 427 single households and 590 couple households was analyzed. First, interaction effects of household types and poverty levels on life satisfaction were statistically significant. For the non-poverty households of older women, there was no explicit difference between single households and couple households in life satisfaction, but for the poverty households, single households were lower in life satisfaction than couple households. Second, as a result of reviewing four groups of older women (poverty-single household, poverty-couple household, non-poverty-single household, and non-poverty-couple household), besides religion, it was found that there were significant differences in age, education level, number of children, health level, residence area, and status of economic activity. Third, when analyzing variables affecting life satisfaction, common predictors for the four groups were health level and ownership of house. Older women who perceived to be healthier and owned their own homes were higher in life satisfaction. For poverty-single households, older women with over middle school graduation were also higher in life satisfaction, but for poverty-couple households, older women with over middle school graduation and more children were higher.

  • The purposes of this study were, 1) to examine the conceptual structure of shopping value and service quality as perceived by women in their 50's and 60's, and 2) to investigate the effects of shopping value and service quality on consumer satisfaction of these women. The results mal provide insights related to the silver market in South Korea. Data were obtained for 286 women in their 50's and 60's living in metropolitan areas in South Korea, and analyzed using factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and regression. The results showed that service quality was composed of Facilities Service, Product Service, Salespersons' Service and Policy Service. Shopping values perceived by elderly consumers consisted of two factors: Hedonic Shopping Value, and Utility Shopping Value. Elderly consumers perceived Hedonic Value by Salespersons' Service and Utility Value by Policy Service. Salespersons' Service of a store was the most important variable for elderly consumers' satisfaction. The finding suggest that a store's Salespersons' Service is important in predicting elderlv corlsumers' purchase behavior, and they give insight into the development of strategies to be utilized in promotion planning. Implications and drawn for the information useful to consumer behavior researchers and retailers of the silver market.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the level of anger and social support and to identify factors affecting anger in elderly women. This was a cross-sectional descriptive survey. A convenience sample of 155 elderly women was recruited from two senior welfare centers and three nursing homes in J city. Data were collected from June 15 to July 15, 2010 through interviews using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The level of social support and anger was 3.73 and 2.72 out of 5, respectively. Anger was statistically significantly different according to type of residence (B=0.21, t=2.42, ${\rho}$=.017), psychiatric medication (B=0.66, t=4.93, ${\rho}$ <.001), physical medication (B=0.41, t=4.22, ${\rho}$ <.001), and evaluation support (B=-0.15, t=-3.00, ${\rho}$=.004), and these accounted 33.0% of anger. Providing proper information and developing social support program would be useful for managing anger of elderly women.

  • This study tried to find various alternatives to live the rest of life positively by examining whether satisfaction with work in old age has a positive effect on psychological adjustment in old age. Using the 15th (2020) data of the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS), 117 men and 355 women were analyzed as a sample to verify the effect of job participation satisfaction among the elderly on psychological adjustment. The results of the regression analysis in this paper (F=11.680, p<.001) were analyzed to be significant. The results showed gender (β=-.192, p<.001), age (β=2.004, p<.001), and job participation satisfaction (β=-3.726, p<.001). Therefore, it was found to have an effect on psychological adaptation. In terms of gender, it was found that men had higher psychological adaptability than women, and that the lower the age, the higher the psychological adaptability. As a result, it was confirmed that the elderly's job participation is a simple economic part of the elderly, and the psychologically positive influence increased. The higher the job participation satisfaction, the higher the psychological adaptability.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to the levels of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in elderly women based on Wilson and Cleary's HRQoL model. Methods: This study analyzed data from the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019 on 868 women over the age of 65 years. Based on the HRQoL model, parameters were categorized as personal, environmental, and physiological characteristics; symptom status; functional status; and perception of health status. The data were analyzed by quantile regression. Results: The overall level of HRQoL was 0.87. Factors related to HRQoL in the 10% quantile were higher education level, higher economic status, economic activity, more walking days, fewer diseases, lower stress, less activity limitation, and higher perceived health status. Factors related to the 25% quantile of HRQoL were more walking days, fewer diseases, less activity limitation, and higher perceived health status. Factors related to the 50% quantile were age, economic activity, more walking days, fewer disease, lower stress, less activity limitation, and higher perceived health status. Factors related to the 75% quantile of HRQoL were smoking, more walking days, fewer diseases, lower stress, less activity limitation, and higher perceived health status. Conclusion: While differing parameters were identified according to the level of HRQoL of elderly women in Korea, there were five common factors. Interventions that focus on increasing walking, mitigating diseases, stress, and activity limitations, and improving perceived health status can improve HRQoL.
