  • This paper describes the results of an irradiation test and the specifications of the pneumatic transfer system (PTS) in the NAA #3 irradiation hole at the HANARO research reactor, which was reinstalled after some modifications of the operation mode at the end of 2004. The outer and inner diameters of the PE transfer tube are 34.1 and 27.5 mm, respectively. PE rabbit was used for sample irradiation. The $N_2$ gas pressure of the PTS lines was adjusted to 0.75 bar. The average sending time to the reactor was $8.5{\pm}0.3$ s and the average receiving time back to the receiver was $3.2{\pm}0.2$ s. The internal and external temperature of the irradiation tube was measured in a range of 50 to $80^{\circ}C$ for a 40 s to 80 s irradiation time, respectively. The optimum irradiation time was estimated to be less than 80 s. The thermal, epithermal and fast neutron flux at 30 MW thermal power were $1.42{\pm}0.01{\times}10^{14},\;1.51{\pm}0.04{\times}10^{13}$ and $9.48{\pm}0.69{\times}10^{11} n{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\codt}s^{1-}$, respectively. The cadmium ratio was approximately 9.40. The data obtained will be applied to supplement user information and for reactor management.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the study, applying Systems Engineering(SE) method, on the feasibility of developing a Melt-down Proof Modular Micro Reactor(MDP-MMR) for its future deployment in Korea. The reactor is being developed by NCSU (North Carolina State University) due to its advantage of melt-down proof nature of the reactor core. For this paper, the characteristics of the MDP-MMR has been studied in terms of fuel characteristics, inherent safety features and passive safety system. The NCSU's development process has been reviewed applying the SE method, and further research is recommended for the feasibility study on deploying such a modular micro reactor in Korea.

  • This paper deals with the development of power control system(PCS) for nuclear power plants. The PCS provides the control motive power to operate the CEDMs(Control Element Drive Mechanism) for reactivity control inside the reactor vessel. The CEDM is raise and lower the CEAs( Control Element Assemblies) inside the reactor core. The CEAs are constructed with the Boron-10 isotope which has a high microscopic cross section of absorption for thermal neutrons. This characteristic causes the addition of negative reactivity when a CEA is inserted and positive reactivity when it is withdrawn from the reactor core.

  • The purpose of the research is to develop the high performance solar chemical reactor for producing hydrogen using steam reforming reaction of methane. A specific shape chemical reactor is suggested : spiral type reactor. The reactor is installed on the dish-type solar thermal system of Inha University. The temperatures, $CH_4$ conversion rates, and Hz proportion are measured. At specific condition, $CH_4$ conversion rates of the spiral type reactor are about 91%, and Hz proportion are about 66%. The spiral type reactor gives reasonably good performance without any problems caused by highly concentrated solar radiation.

  • The widely used medical isotope technetium-99 m (99mTc) is a daughter of Molybdenum-99 (99Mo), which is mainly produced using dedicated research reactors from the nuclear fission of uranium-235 (235U). 99mTc has been used for several decades, which covers about 80% of the all the nuclear diagnostics procedures. Recently, the instability of the supply has become an important topic throughout the international radioisotope communities. The aging of major 99Mo production reactors has also caused frequent shutdowns. It has triggered movements to establish new research reactors for 99Mo production, as well as the development of various 99Mo production technologies. In this context, a new research reactor project was launched in 2012 in Korea. At the same time, the development of fission-based 99Mo production process was initiated by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in 2012 in order to be implemented by the new research reactor. The KAERI process is based on the caustic dissolution of plate-type LEU (low enriched uranium) dispersion targets, followed by the separation and purification using a series of columns. The development of proper waste treatment technologies for the gaseous, liquid, and solid radioactive wastes also took place. The first stage of this process development was completed in 2018. In this paper, the results of the hot test production of fission 99Mo using HANARO, KAERI's 30 MW research reactor, was described.

  • Substrate specificity of a flow-injection-analysis (FIA)-type biogenic amine sensor with enzyme reactor was determined. The enzyme reactor was prepared with a diamine oxidase immobilized on preactivated chitosan porous beads (Chitopearl) by intramolecular cross-linking via glutaraldehyde. The sensor showed a rapid response to putrescine and a quasi-linear calibration curve was obtained up to 15.0 mM. The optimal pH and temperature of the enzyme reactor system were 7.5 and $35^{\circ}C$. Interferences due to ATP-related compounds and trimethylamine, and the effects of NaCl and amino acids were measured. Inhibitory effects owing to these components could be mitigated by sample extraction with perchloric acid. Polyamines except putrescine were determined by a putrescine calibration range within 26.7%. This system was confirmed as rapid and convenient for biogenic amine determination.

  • Anammox reactor seeded with sewage sludge from RBC reactor and anaerobic granule from full-scale UASB reactor treating distillery wastewater was operated. Mixed granule and suspended sludge in the ammonium oxidizing process were taken and analyzed to investigate microbial community structure by molecular methods such as gene cloning and phylogenetic tree analysis after 250 days of continuous cultivation. The average nitrogen removal rate showed $0.9kg\;N/m^3-day$ after 250 days of continuous operation, then the maximum nitrogen removal rate showd $1.9kg\;N/m^3-day$ when $2.1kg\;N/m^3-day$ of nitrogen loading rate was applied. As results of gene cloning and phylogenetic tree analysis, Three kinds of phylum were found to be Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Planctomycetes (anammox bacteria) in mixed granule. Five kinds of phylum were found to be Proteobacteria, Chlorobi, Planctomycetes, Nitrospirae and Verrucomicrobia in suspended sludge. We found planctomycete KSU-1 and putative new anammox bacteria in the reactor. Microbial structure represented different consortia depending on the types of sludge in the anammox reactor.

  • Shunt reactor, a facility for reactive power compensation, is switched several times a day depending on the load pattern. When the circuitbreaker opens the shunt reactor over-voltage is generated by several factors which degrade the insulating performance of internal parts of the circuit-breaker and cause severe voltage stress on the equipment in the power system. Transient phenomenon occurring during the switching of shunt reactor are available in laboratories that verify the performance of the circuit-breaker by simulating the power system. However, it is difficult to measure the transient phenomenon that occurs during actual operation in actual power system due to many limitations. Therefore, this paper deals with the modeling using EMTP to analyze the reignition and current chopping which causes more severe transient recovery voltage in the small inductive current breaking in actual power systems. In addition, this paper analyzes the main phenomenon that cause circuit-breaker failure in opening shunt reactor using EMTP model.

  • To enhance the safety of nuclear reactors after the Fukushima accident, researchers are developing various types of accident tolerant fuel (ATF) to increase the coping time and reduce the generation of hydrogen by oxidation. Coated cladding, an ATF concept, can be a promising technology in view of its commercialization. We applied 3D printing technology to the fabrication of coated cladding as well as of coated pellets. Direct metal tooling (DMT) in 3D printing technologies can create a coated layer on the tubular cladding surface, which maintains stability during corrosion, creep, and wear in the reactor. A 3D laser coating apparatus was built, and parameter studies were carried out. To coat pellets with erbium using this apparatus, we undertook preliminary experiments involving metal pellets. The adhesion test showed that the coated layer can be maintained at near fracture strength.
