  • This study evaluates the economic impact of product innovation by using firm-level data from the Community Innovation Survey conducted in Japan. It accounts for possible technological spillover from innovation activities and examines the extent to which new-to-market product innovations contribute to firm performance. Econometric analysis using a simultaneous equation model reveals that new-to-market product innovation is likely to increase a firm's sales without cannibalizing those of existing products and generate more technological spillover to other firms. Moreover, such innovation is more likely to emerge from firms collaborating with academic institutions. The paper concludes by discussing policy implications of these findings as well as points to the importance of cross-country comparison between Korea and Japan.

  • The technological innovation has been recognized critical factors of productivity of firms and key contribution of improvement of firm performance for a long time. Many researchers have investigated the relationship between R&D investment or patents as a proxy of innovation and productivity. But there were some problem such as lacking of data and ambiguity of innovation definition. So, previous literatures have some difficulty in reliability of analysis for using only survey data. And investigating the relationship R&D and other factors is very difficult. Therefore, this paper tries to investigate and analysis the relationship between innovation and performance of Korean manufacturing firms. Using KIS2002(Korean Innovation survey 2002) which was based on Oslo manual in 2002 and financial data of firms (KISINFO), I will intend to establish the reliability of multiple analysis. In detail, I will investigate whether the innovation input have effect on the innovation output, whether the innovation output have effect on productivity for heterogeneity and what factor of innovation environment have effect on the innovation itself.

  • Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the difference of technological innovative pattern by industry. Research design and methodology - we try to identify the major factors which can exert an effective influence on actual innovation output, utilizing the result of Korean Innovation Survey. By doing so, this work can make a comparison with Pavitt (1984) and succeeding discussion on sectoral pattern of innovation Results - Analysis on major industry in Korea shows that there are substantial differences in terms of the source of innovation, organization-related factor, and appropriation mechanism among each industry, and differential strategy to be proper for the nature of each industry is needed. There is some variation within industries which deemed as same type of sector defined by Pavitt. Conclusions - This analysis call for elaborate analysis on sectoral pattern of innovation, considering the change and difference of innovative environment as well as differential business strategy and way to do innovate, which is proper considering the nature of innovative pattern in each industry for successful technological innovation in Korea. At the same time, proper policy measure considering the differential pattern of technological innovation is needed.

  • In this paper, the technology innovation for software firms are discussed. Through the literature study, the concepts about this issue and the environment and activity of software firm's the technology innovation related are described. The survey paper was developed for searching the obstacles, policy considerations, and performance of this issue etc. Also questionnaire sheet was made for identifying the relations on technology innovation activities and performance. The degree of understanding about the need of technology innovation were very high according to the analysis result from the response based on the 103 software firms. Among this survey the other results are described as follows; the motivation of technology innovation, the necessity and implementation, the duration acquired for innovation result, the favorite support program as for innovation policy, obstacles for innovation implementation, the reason for innovation collaboration etc. Finally, it is verified statistically that the performance of technology innovation be affected by the employment of external professional technician, research and development, the technical education.

  • This study analyzes determinants of innovation in Korea manufacturing industries from 2005 to 2007. In order to do this, we use raw data from 'Korea Innovation Survey 2008: Manufacturing Sector' conducted by STEPI, and also collect financial statement data from Korea Investors Service. As an analytical method for the empirical test, we utilize Probit model. Empirical results show that firm size and market concentration have positive relationship with firm's innovation activities. These support the ‘Schumpeterian hypothesis’. This would be the most distinguished feature of this study compared to previous literatures. Our study also shows that R&D personnel ratio, R&D intensity, and advertising intensity have positive effects on firms' innovation. Thus, we can say that R&D activities and consumer orientation are the main determinants of innovation. However, profit ratio and growth rate do not have any statistically significant effect on firms' innovation.

  • The Purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of various internal and external innovation activities of SMEs on their innovation performances in the field of electronics and communication industry. Drawing upon the literature review, internal and external innovation activities are defined and conceptualized, and independent, dependent and moderator variables are developed. We have used survey-based data for this study from the survey of technology innovation activities in manufacturing industry, which was conducted by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) in 2010. The main result of this study shows that there were no significant differences in the impact of innovation activities on market performance according to the size of SMEs. On the other hands, we found that there were significant differences in the impact of innovation activities on technological innovation performance according to the size of SMEs. Therefore, in order to make high technological innovation performance, companies in the field of electronics and communication industry need to properly implement the internal and external innovation activities by considering their size.
