  • Strong ties such as family members, relatives and close friends have been widely acknowledged as a vital factor when a potential entrepreneur attempts to initiate entrepreneurial activity. Recent theoretical arguments focus that family social capital, a form of social capital, that is embedded in family relationships can contribute to venture creation as well as to the development of competitive advantage for established firms. Meantime, there have been arguments that the most dominant single entrepreneurial ethnic group in the world is the Chinese people, while the People's Republic of China is widely recognized as fast growing economic power that is driven by entrepreneurial ventures in a large scale. This study tests the effect of perceived relational supports typically being provided by family members, close relatives and friends on forming self-efficacy and entrepreneurial motivation of university students by using samples collected from 4 Korean Universities(Wonkwang, Baekseok, Soongsil and Dankook university) and Guangzhou University in China. The mediating of self-efficacy was also tested to gain better understanding of the role of the variable. The results of the study suggest that 1) both self-efficacy and entrepreneurial motivation are influenced positively by the perceived relational supports, 2) self-efficacy of university students affects their entrepreneurial motivation positively, 3) self-efficacy is appeared to be mediated partially for China in between perceived relational supports and entrepreneurial motivation, but the same variable is exhibited a full mediation in the same path of the research model for Korea, which was a distinction between the students of two countries in this study. Discussion and practical implication on the results are provided.

  • Although a well-established line of research has addressed the funding decision, the activities of investee startups to receive funding have been overlooked because prior research has been conduced from investor's point of view. In addition, funding does not result from one off decisions but from decision process with many stages. Moreover, the emphasis placed on specific investment criteria varies by different stages during the process. Therefore, understanding the initial funding of startups requires to analyze the strategic behaviors of startups throughout the entire funding decision process from first meeting with investors to funding success. This study investigates the initial funding process of startups, and the analysis is based on a case study of LetinAR one of the successful startups founded by students in South Korea. This study investigates how early start-ups were able to receive funding from startup's point of view, and the analysis is based on a case study of LetinAR, an augmented reality(AR) startup using Pin mirror technology. By adding "legitimacy building" stage that had not been addressed previously, we divided funding process into four stages: 1) legitimacy building, 2) familiarization, 3) screening, and 4) bargaining phase. We did not only analyze major criteria, but also strategic activities of startup at each stage. This study makes a contribution by helping us understand complicated process of funding and the successful strategic behavior of investor backed startups.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the trends of the start-up research in Korea. To accomplish this, meta-analysis was carried out using text mining methodology by dividing the entrepreneur-related master's and doctoral theses registered in RISS into the first term of entrepreneurship research by 2009 and the second term of entrepreneurship research from 2010. As a result of this study, it can be seen from the three different analysis that the entrepreneurship education and government policy and support are the subject of continuous research topics in the whole period and that the researches on small business start-ups have been studied continuously and conducted more in the second half. In addition, empirical analysis is strengthened in the latter stage of entrepreneurial research. The TF-IDF analysis reveals that many researches on veterans have been carried out in the field of entrepreneurship research, and in the latter period, it was found that many studies related to the elderly were conducted with cultural contents and aging society. In addition, research on brand-related research has been carried out throughout the entire period, and research on venture-related research, characteristics of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship motivation and start-up strategy have been conducted a lot and female entrepreneurship was also studied. In the latter period, we have emphasized entrepreneurial achievements and found that research on start-ups such as industry-academia cooperation, start-up investment, and social enterprise diversified. This study is meaningful to apply the method which is becoming a recent issue such as text mining and topic analysis to the meta-analysis related to start-up. Future research will need to be undertaken on a variety of more detailed topics related to entrepreneurship.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the survival rate and survival characteristics of young start-up entrepreneurs supported with public financing, by using non-parametric statistic of Kaplanr-Meier Analysis on non-financial data. Average survival periods of different survival characteristics have been estimated by dividing the age groups into 20s and 30s. After then, the main variables affecting the survival period have been analyzed. 3,825 firms guaranteed by Credit Guarantee Institutions in Korea were used as database for the analysis. 3,242 firms have survived while 583 firms have gone insolvent. The study period was from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2017. Age-based breakdown of the business founders show that 3 variables in the 20s and 5 variables in the 30s are derived as the significant variables, resulting in the significant differences of each age group. In other words, the start-up support agencies and financial institutions need to develop a credit evaluation system that distinguishes the criteria of age range and find information that reflect the characteristics of entrepreneurs in their 20s as well as developing tailor-made financial products. Also, step-by-step support measures are required for the start-ups of high survival times and make them grow into promising SMEs. Meanwhile, non-financial support plans shall be invigorated along with the financial ones to help the start-ups of low survival times. This study is meaningful in that the survival analysis has been conducted by using the non-financial data of young start-up entrepreneurs. It is expected that the results of this analysis contribute to the enhancement of survival rate of start-ups by providing start-up support agencies and start-up business owners with the unique information of the survival characteristics.

  • Purpose - Recently, the management conditions of small independent retailers are getting worse everyday as large-scale marts and franchised convenience stores are increasing. The objective of this research is to find out the antecedents and consequences of cooperation in voluntary chain in order to enhance small independent retailer's competitiveness. Voluntary chains, also called affiliation or symbol groups, or allied group represent a high market shared in some European countries like Italy, France, and Germany. Nevertheless, there are still limitations in this research from academic fields. Drawing from network theory, the author investigates the relationship between antecedent factors in voluntary chain cooperation, such as participation benefits, justice of compensation, and autonomy in voluntary chain, and relationship specific asset. The author also attempts to examine the relationship between the relationship specific asset and cooperation of voluntary chain member shop and cooperation and consequence factors of voluntary chain cooperation, such as efficiency, group cohesiveness, and long-term relationship. Research design, data, and methodology - The author presented conceptual framework integrating the major antecedents and consequences of voluntary chain cooperation. The data were collected from 174 independent small retailers who joined K-voluntary chain. K-voluntary chain consists of small independent retailers. In accordance with their status, each entrepreneur associated with the voluntary group can own one or more outlets and can be a part of the life and the decision-making process of the group. This participation is not based on company turnover or on the number of outlets, but based on a one member, one vote system. To verify the research model and test hypotheses, the author carefully investigated the reliability, content validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the proposed model. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS structural equation modeling program. Results - The results of this study are as follows. First, as antecedent variables, participation benefits and justice of compensation have positive effect on the relationship specific assets of voluntary chain members. Second, voluntary chain members' relationship specific asset also directly related to the level of its cooperation to chain headquarter. Third, cooperation of voluntary chain member shop facilitates efficiency, group cohesiveness, and long-term relationship. Unexpectedly, there are no effect autonomy in voluntary chain to relationship specific asset. Conclusions - This research shows several theoretical and practical implications to both marketing scholars and marketers. In terms of theoretical implications, this study applies to network theory and network theory variables to explain the antecedent and consequence factors of cooperation in voluntary chain. From the point of view from business management, most of all, this study shows the way how to reinforce competitiveness of voluntary chain. Specifically, it is necessary for voluntary chain headquarter to give higher level of participation benefit and justice of compensation to its members.
