  • Extraction of communities from a journal citation database by the citation structure is a useful tool to see closely related groups of the journals. SCI of Thomson Reuters or SCOPUS of Elsevier have had tried to grasp community structure of the journals in their indices according to citation relationships, but such a trial has not been made yet with the Korean Citation Index, KCI. Therefore, in this study, we extracted communities of the journals of the natural science area in KCI, using various clustering algorithms for a social network based on citations among the journals and compared the groups obtained with the classfication of KCI. The infomap algorithm, one of the clustering methods applied in this article, showed the best grouping result in the sense that groups obtained by it are closer to the KCI classification than by other algorithms considered and reflect well the citation structure of the journals. The classification results obtained in this study might be taken consideration when reclassification of the KCI journals will be made in the future.

  • There have been little comprehensive research for studying impact of foreign journals on Korean scientists. The main reason for this is because there was no extensive citation index database of domestic journals for analysis. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) built the Korea Science Citation Database (KSCD), and have provided Korea Science Citation Index (KSCI) and Korea Journal Citation Reports (KJCR) services. In this article, citing behavior of Korean scientists on foreign journals was examined by using KSCD that covers Korean core journals. This research covers (1) analysis of foreign document types cited, (2) analysis of citation counts of foreign journals by subject and the ratio of citing different disciplines, (3) analysis of language and country of foreign documents cited, (4) analysis of publishers of journals and whether or not journals are listed on global citation index services and (5) analysis for current situation of subscribing to foreign electronic journals in Korea. The results of this research would be useful for establishing strategies for licensing foreign electronic journals and for information services. From this research, immediacy citation rate (average 1.46%), peak-time (average 3.9 years) and half-life (average 8 years) of cited foreign journals were identified. It was also found that Korean scientistis tend to cite journals covered in SCI(E) or SCOPUS, and 90% of cited foreign journals have been licensed by institutions in Korea.

  • It is important for scientific and technological papers to build citation DB and to offer service. The best example of citation DB is SCI that has been utilized in the world. The majority of Korean journals is not SCI journal, so it is impossible for the domestic journals to conduct quantitative analysis and performance evaluation. Korea Science Citation Index Service is the alternative service to get rid of the above problem. In the study, we carried out the user satisfaction survey for new vision of service from existing KSCI, correcting the result data. We evaluated the data and then derived the level of current system and the future improvement direction.

  • Recently, the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) announced new plan to reflect the KCI citation measures in journal evaluation. In principle, Journal evaluation should reflect each journals situation and characteristics through various indicators. In this study, three improvement plans were proposed by reviewing the announced journal evaluation plan of NRF. The first improvement is to consider the five-year IF as an additional citation measure; the second improvement is to allow flexible selection of the category level on which to rank journals; and the last improvement is to combine the previous two methods and apply them together. The improvement methods proposed in this study are expected to contribute to minimizing side effects of KCI journal evaluation.

  • In the past decade, East Asian Research has received attention from researchers as well as in South Korea society-at-large. The broad category of East Asian Research includes various disciplinary fields, such as "history, economics, and politics; however, few studies have used quantitative analysis to explore its development. In this paper, we used network analysis to identify the disciplines and active research areas, focusing on productivity, collaboration patterns, and citation networks of East Asian Research in South Korea. For this study, 6,646 journal publications related with East Asian Research and indexed by KCI (Korean Citation Index) during the 10-year period of 2004-2013 were considered. Results show that East Asian Research was led during this period by sole-researchers, rather than interdisciplinary studies. Moreover, a co-institution network represents active institutions with a high degree and collaborative centrality. In terms of journal-journal citation networks, journals belonging to both "history" and "Korean literature" disciplines were dominant.

  • It is very important to analyze and provide information resources for research output produced in the computer field, the core science of the 4th Industrial Revolution. In this paper, SCI journals cited from domestic journals in the computer field were identified and the citation rankings and their co-citation networks were generated, analyzed, mapped and visualized. For this, the bibliographic and citation index information from 2015 to 2017 in the KSCD were used as the basis data, and the co-citation method and network centrality analysis were used. As a result of this study, the number of citations and the citation ranks of SCI journals and papers cited by korean journals in the computer field were analyzed, and peak time(2 years), half-life(6.6 years), and immediacy citation rate(2.4%) were measured by citation age analysis. As a result of network centrality analysis, Three network centralities(degree, betweenness, closeness) of the cited SCI journals were calculated, and the ranking of journals by each network centrality was measured, and the relationship between the subject classifications of the cited SCI journals was visualized through the mapping of the network.
