  • Active transport is one of the essential function of biological membrane transport systems, in which substrates are transported from lower to higher concentration side against their concentration gradient. In this article, we describe photo- and pH-induced active transport models by designing the functional carriers based on the affinity-switching strategy.

  • The plasma tube array display is expected to realize the wall size display with very high luminous efficacy. The cell design for high luminous efficacy was investigated. Also discharging in plasma tube was observed to investigate the structure for high luminous efficacy. As the result, high luminous efficacy of 5.4 lm/W was achieved.

  • How many leafs the forest has can be very important information to understand the forest is healthy or not, or it is growing or declining. However until now, very much labor and long time is needed to measure it. The purpose of this study is to develop the method that estimate how many leafs there are at the forest.

  • Ground truth measurement system using RC helicopter is very useful to measure BRDF. The helicopter is operated human operator but it can keep its position by GPS aided hovering system. We developed the measurement system and have done ground truth in Mongolia in the summer of 1999 and have made sure the system can measure BRDF expectedly.

  • During the sintering of powder materials, many these are microstructural phenomena are caused by atomic diffusion. (1) neck formation and compact densification, (2) grain growth, i.e., growth of matrix grains and dispersed grains, (3) alloying or generation of compound, (4) generations of peculiar and hard layers near sintered compact surface, etc. The studies of the present author and co-workers on these phenomena which were carried out during 40 years are briefly introduced.

  • We introduce a series of studies on turbulent skin friction drag reduction in wall-turbulence. First, an identity equation relating the skin friction drag and the Reynolds shear stress (the FIK identity) is introduced. Based on the implication of the FIK identity, a new analytical suboptimal feedback control law requiring the streamwise wall-shear stress only is introduced and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of turbulent pipe flow with that control is reported. We also introduce DNS of an anisotropic compliant surface and parameter optimization using an evolutionary optimization technique.
