Definite Descriptions and Attitude Reports in Situation Semantics

  • In this paper I will seek to show that situation theoretic analysis of the attitudes can finely describe references of definite descriptions in attitude reports: co-reference, mis-reference, and speaker's reference. Situation theoretic concepts of a proposition and a resource situation provide excellent means to account for these references: Proposition, which is the combination of a type and an assignment, can combine linguistic and non-linguistic information; Resource situation, sometimes realized as speaker's wrong knowledge situation about an individual, can serve to explain idiosyncratic aspects of attitude reports.

A Knowledge-based Network Management System Using Active Information Resources

  • An expert network administrator is not always stationed as disasters happen. In that case, it is desirable that a novice administrator is capable of taking part in network recovery operations as well. In this paper, aknowledge-based network management system in emergency situations is presented. We use the Active Information Resource based Network Management System (AIR-NMS) to relieve the human administrator from parts of her management tasks and present an interface that remotely can control this management system. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated by experiments using a prototype system.

조직 내 분석지 생성 영향 요인에 관한 탐색적 사례 연구 (An Exploratory Case Study on the Factors Affecting the Analytical Knowledge Creation in the Organization)

  • There are two types of organizational knowledge in terms of its creation process: experiential and analytical knowledge. The experiential knowledge is created by repetitive experiences of an individual or team through task execution, while the analytical knowledge is acquired by analyzing accumulated data or information in the organization. The experiential knowledge often remains tacit or implicit in the organization because it is primarily acquired at an individual or team level. Therefore, the issue on the experiential knowledge is to share it actively within the organization. On the other hand, the analytical knowledge is explicit in its nature since it is extracted from data or information. Thus, it is important to guide a systematic creation of the analytical knowledge rather than encourage to share it. The current trend of "knowledge management" mainly focuses on the experiential knowledge - know-how, idea, case, etc - and neglects another important knowledge in the organization. i. e., analytical knowledge. This paper tries to shed a new light on the "knowledge management" arena by introducing rather new perspective in the concept of knowledge. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the analytical knowledge creation in the organization. We conducted an exploratory case study of three companies with a previously defined research framework and found some critical factors for the analytical knowledge creation. They are "organizational resource", "effectiveness of feedback process", "data source management", and "experimental mind set". Finally, we proposed research model and propositions regarding the analytical knowledge creation in the organization.

  • Recently, the importance of plant maintenance(PM) was highly raised to provide efficient plant operation which highly affects the productivity. For this reason, a number of engineering methodologies, such as riskbased inspection(RBI), fitness for service guidelines(FFS), plant lifecycle management(PLM), have been applied to improve the plant operation efficiency. Also, a network-based business operation system, which is called ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning), has been introduced in the field of plant maintenance. However, there was no attempt to connect engineering methodologies to the ERP PM system. In this paper, a knowledge-based information system for the plant operation of steel making company has been proposed. This system, which is named as K-VRS(Knowledge-based Virtual Reality System), provides a connection between ERP plant maintenance module and knowledge-based engineering methodologies, and thus, enables network-based highly effective plant maintenance process. The developed system is expected to play a great role for more efficient and safer plant maintenance.

Information Networking and its Application in the Digital Era with Illustration from the University of Port Harcourt Library

  • This paper discussed the factors that necessitated information networking, types of networks, benefits of information networking, library information networking and the University of Port 0Harcourt library network initiatives. Information networking is a process of communication, exchange of ideas, resource sharing and collaboration between individuals, organizations, institutions and libraries and it is facilitated by ICTs and the internet for improved accessibility. It has been brought about by information explosion, rapid advancement in information communication technologies, inadequate funding and increased demand for quality information. Networks can be classified into local, national, regional, and international networks and are formed to serve different categories of user communities. Benefits of information networking include resource sharing, on-line conferences and participation in programmes at distant centers, collaboration among scholars in different countries. Communication flow through the internet, social media, and electronic mail. Library information networking started with the interlibrary loan which has metamorphosed into library consortia in which groups of libraries partner to coordinate activities, share resources and combine expertise. The University of Port Harcourt Library network initiatives started with an e-granary (a CD ROM) and the establishment of a local area network. The library subscribes to more than 10 electronic databases. Information networking has greatly improved the sharing of resources in acquisition and dissemination of information resources since no single institution can acquire the overwhelming number of information resources in their various formats.

  • 최근 몇 년 동안 연구자들과 실무자들에게 중요한 이슈가 되고 있는 것은 기업의 성과를 향상시키기 위한 지식 관리 역량이 어떠한 구조로 이루어져 있는가 하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 자원 근간 이론과 지식 근간 이론에 대한 심도 있는 논의를 통해 이 이슈에 대한 답을 찾고자하였다. 이 두 가지 이론들을 바탕으로 지식 관리에 관련된 기존 문헌의 심도 있는 검토와 실무자들과의 인터뷰를 통해 지식 관리 역량의 6가지 중요한 차원들을 도출하였다. 그런 다음, 지식관리 역량의 통합적 개념 모델을 제안하고 이 지식 관리 역량이 기업의 성과와 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 분석하였다. 한국에서 전사적으로 지식 관리 시스템을 도입한 기업들로부터 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 PLS 분석을 실시하여 본 연구에서 제시한 모델을 검증하였다. 이 분석을 통해 실무자들과 연구자들에게 지식 관리 역량에 대한 의미 있는 결과와 향후 보다 효과적인 지식관리에 대한 방향을 제시하였다.

해외 지식정보자원의 수집 예산 규모에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Budget for Foreign Knowledge Information Resources in Korean Academic and Research Libraries)

  • 우리나라가 학술연구도서관을 국제경쟁력을 갖춘 세계 수준의 도서관으로 육성하고자 한다면, 선진제국이나 경쟁국들에 비해 열악한 국가 지식정보자원의 총량을 제고하고, 그 활용을 극대화할 수 있는 노력을 강구해야 할 것이다. 본 연구에서는 그러한 노력 가운데 국가차원의 해외 지식정보자원의 수집 및 유통 체계의 확립이 선결사항이라고 여기면서, 이를 위해 기초 자료로 활용할 수 있도록 국내 학술연구도서관이 해외 지시정보자원의 수집을 위해 지출하는 연간 예산 규모를 산정하고자 시도하였다. 우선, 국외도서 및 해외학술지 등 인쇄물 중심의 해외 지식정보자원 총 수집 예산, 해외 전자저널의 총 구독 예산, 해외 웹 DB의 총 구독 예산은 대학도서관과 전문도서관으로 구분하여 추산하였고, 그리고, 해외 문헌복사서비스의 총 이용 예산은 도서관의 관종을 구분하지 않고 추산하였다.

Scalp injury management by a maxillofacial surgeon in a low-resource hospital

  • Background: Head or scalp injury is a life-threatening and typically accidental human injury. Most medical departments require immediate medical treatment and proper treatment with specialized medical personnel and facilities. However, in low-resource environments, such as the rural region of West Africa, the authors have treated emergency trauma patients and provided immediate treatment despite lack of resources. Case presentation: We reviewed three cases of scalp injury patients, with representative clinical information, and used these cases to outline feedback on scalp trauma treatment based on the specialty knowledge of general and emergency surgeon. Conclusions: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are medical specialists that can immediately diagnose and treat these scalp injuries based on their medical knowledge and experience with the maxillofacial region.
