  • Mixture electrodes of a graphite having a good cycle performance and a silicon monoxide (SiO) having a high capacity are fabricated and their cycle performances are evaluated as negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. The electrode prepared by mixing the natural graphite and carbon-coated SiO in a mass ratio of 9:1 shows a reversible capacity of $480mAh\;g^{-1}$, 33% higher than that of graphite. However, the capacity deteriorates continuously upon cycling due to the volume change of silicon monoxide. In this study, the factors that can improve the cycle performance have been discussed through the change in the configurations of the electrode and the electrolyte. The electrode using the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder shows the best cycle performance compared to the conventional binders. The electrode sing the CMC and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder not only has almost the similar cycle characteristics with the electrode using the CMC binder but also has the better rate capability. When the fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is used as an electrolyte additive, the cycle life is improved. However, the electrolyte with 5 wt% of FEC is appropriate because the rate capability decreases when the content of FEC is increased to 10 wt%. In addition, when the mass loading of the electrode is lowered, the cycle performance is greatly improved. Also, enhanced cycle performance is achieved using the roughened Cu current collector polished by abrasive paper.

  • This study is intended to develop plant inquiry instruction using Rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (RcBr) whose life cycle is relatively short, and to apply it to the elementary science instruction of the 4th grader and examine their plant concept, science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes. The materials were consisted of laboratory manuals for the students as well as teachers' guide. By observing the life cycle of RcBr, students can experience the conceptual learning of the plant's life cycle. In addition, this study investigated the cause of change in science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes by interviewing 12 students. It has shown that plant inquiry instruction using RcBr has meaningful effects on students' understanding of the plant concept, improving students' science inquiry skills, and changing students' science-related attitudes. Students who showed improvement in science inquiry skills were able to answer questions regarding science knowledge correctly. And students whose science related attitudes were improved had a positive attitude on cultivating RcBr. Students told that RcBr was an interesting and good material to inquire plant. Because of its small size and its relatively short life cycle of RcBR, it should be a desirable plant material for the inquiry instruction which can give rise to useful and meaningful results for the elementary school students.

  • Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is a complex and large system in which there are many subsystems, interfaces, functions and demanding performance requirements. Because many contractors participate in the development, it is necessary to apply methods of sharing common objectives and communicating effectively among all of the stakeholders. This paper shows not only the methodology and the results of computer-aided systems engineering including requirement management, functional analysis and architecting LRT system, but also propose a tool to help manage a project by linking WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), work organization and PBS (Product Breakdown Structure). The application of computer-aided tool RDD-100 provides the capability to model product design knowledge and decisions about important issues such as architecting the top-level system. The product design knowledge will be essential in integrating the following life-cycle phase activities over the life of the LRT system. Additionally, when a new generation train system is required, the reuse of the database can increase the system design productivity and effectiveness significantly.

  • Research into the selection of suitable materials and the development of fast processing methods for press die manufacturing is absolutely necessary to reduce the production time and cost. In particular, knowledge of its heat properties must be considered whendeveloping a long press die. Generally, as the main component materials of press dies, Cr, W low alloy tool steel, high carbon-high chrome steel, high speed steel, etc., are used as thetooling steel for the cold die. Machine tools and wire-cut electric discharge machining are mainly used for processing the press die parts. There are many differences in the machining time and life cycle of die parts depending on the machining process. The parts produced by milling and grinding have a high manufacturing time and cost with a long life cycle, while thosemade by milling and wire-cut discharge machining have areduced manufacturing time and cost, whereastheir die life cycle is reduced. Therefore, in this study, we will discuss amethod of improving the life cycle of the die parts by using heat treatment as a processing method that reduces the manufacturing time and cost. SEM, EDS analysis and the surface roughness analysis of the surface and center of the workpiece are used for analyzing the specimens produced by three machining methods, viz. milling - grinding, milling - wire cut discharge, and milling - wire cut discharge - heat treatment. A method of making die parts having the same life cycle as those produced by milling - grinding is developed with the milling - wire cut discharge - high temperature tempering method.

  • This paper introduces an approach to semantic mapping using Product ontology for CPC environment. In CPC environment, it is necessary that the participants in a product life cycle should share the same understanding about the semantic of product terms. For example, they should know that although 'COMPONENT' and 'ITEM' are different word-expressions, they could have the same meaning. In order to handle such terms in the information system, it is desirable that the system automatically recognizes that the terms have the same semantics. Serving this purpose, we described an ontology design methodology using first order logic, knowledge interchange format, and knowledge engineering process. In our approach, we investigated domain knowledge of the Bill Of Material, and then designed Product ontology of it. Based on the ontology, we described syntactic translation, semantic translation, and semantic mapping procedure with an example.
