Marine algaes are capable of binding a large quantity of heavy metals. We have investigated the uptake capacity of Pb and Cu by using 22 species of marine algae. collected from Korean coast. Among a variety of different marine algae types for biosorbent potential. Kjellmaniella crassifolia showed the highest uptake capacity of Pb. Metal uptake of Pb and Cu by Kjellmaniella crassifolia increase as the initial concentration rises, as long as binding sites are remained. The metal uptake parameters for Pb and Cu had been determined according to Langmuir and Freundlich model. By increasing pH, Pb uptake was increased and Cu uptake was constant. The maximum uptake capacity of Pb and Cu by Kjellmaniella crassifolia was 437 mg/g and 129 mg/g, respectively.

The batch experiments of biosorption were carried out for the removal of lead ion from metal solution using Laminaria japonica and Kjellmaniella crassifolia, two species of marine algaes as biosorbent. We have investigated biosorption kinetics and equilibrium of lead by using marine algaes. We observed that biosorption of lead occurred very rapidly by marine algaes ; the biosorption reached equilibrium less than 2 hr. These experimental data could be accurately described by a pseudo-second-order rate equation, obtaining values between $0.883{\times}10^{-3}$ and $0.628{\times}10^{-3}\;g/mg/min$ for the biosorption rate constant $k_{2,ad}$. It could be described with Langmuir, Redlich-Peterson, and Koble-Corrigan(Langmuir-Freundlich) equation. The biosorption capacity by L. japonica and K. crassifolia were in the sequence of Pb>Cd>Cr>Cu and Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr, respectively. The biosorption capacity of L. japonica were increased with pH increasing.
In order to improve the utilization of seaweeds, two kinds of mixed seasoning concentrates (KMS, MKS) were prepared with Kjellmaniella crassifolia and Mytilus coruscus as main ingredients. Fermentation experiments were carried out at $4^{\circ}C$ for 70 days with Kimchi. As a result, SK-A showed a decrease in pH and an increase in acidity. Salinity was not significantly different after 70th day. Reducing sugar content was higher in mixed seasoning group. Lactic acid bacteria Leuconostoc sp. and Lactobacillus sp. Increased in the control group after 20 days of fermentation. The lightness was higher in the control group from the early stage of dipping to 30 days, and the degree of yellowing was higher than that of SK-B group from 20 days. The hardness of the SK-A group was high at the early stage of immersion and at 10th day. The content of aspartic acid and glutamic acid in free amino acid SK-A group was significantly higher (p<0.05). The content of sweet amino acids was significantly higher in the SK-A group on the 0th, 10th, and 30th days of fermentation than the other groups (p<0.05). The sensory test results showed that SK-A showed the most favorable taste. As a result of reviewing the above results, it is expected that SK-A group immersed in 100 g of seasoning liquid KMS made from Kjellmaniella crassifolia and Mytilus coruscus as a subordinate material will provide taste and nutrition to consumers.
Kjellmaniella crassifalia Miyabe is one of the valuable seaweed crops cultured in the Korean coastal waters of the East Sea. Unfortunately recent environmental changes have adversely influenced its growth, prompting the need to develop techniques for species restoration. To obtatin biological information, the growth of the species was monitored for one year. The maximum blade length, $110{\pm}45cm$, was attained in July, and zoospores were released in November. The optimum culture conditions allowing juvenile sporophytes to grow to young blades consisted of $20{\mu}mol/m^2s\;at\;10^{\circ}C$ under which the blade length grew to $1,732.5{\pm}143.3{\mu}m$ in 42 days. Sporangial sori started to form in September, reaching 85% maturity in November and 89% maturity in December. Examining the growth of the species according to depth, the individuals growing at 5 meters grew the most, reaching a blade length of $75.9{\pm}18.9cm$ in August.

We examined the conditions for separating and preserving the male and female gametophytes of Kjellmaniella crassifolia. The highest percentage of zygote germination (85%) was on semi-solid medium composed of 1.0% transfer gel agar at $15\;^{\circ}C$ and $20\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ after a 4-week culture. Zygote germination in PESI liquid medium was 93.5% at $20\;^{\circ}C$ and $20\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$. The maximum zygote growth was $252{\pm}19.7\;{\mu}m$ on 1.0% transfer gel agar at $15\;^{\circ}C$ and $40\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ after 5-week culture, and was $76.7{\pm}2.8\;{\mu}m$ in PESI liquid medium at $20\;^{\circ}C$ and $40\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$. The respective numbers of separated male and female gametophytes from germinated zygotes were 157 and 93 on 1.0% transfer gel agar and 14 and 28 in PESI liquid medium. The maximum growth of separated male and female gametophytes was $575{\pm}28.3\;{\mu}m$ at $5\;^{\circ}C$ and $60\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ and $686{\pm}35.4\;{\mu}m$ at $20\;^{\circ}C$ and $20\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ in PESI liquid medium after 3 weeks, respectively. The highest percentage fertilized was $93.3{\pm}5.8%$ at $15\;^{\circ}C$ and $20\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ in PESI liquid medium. These results show that the best conditions for the separation and preservation of gametophytes (male and female) consisted of culturing on 1.0% transfer gel agar at $15\;^{\circ}C$ and $20\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$.
Laboratory culture of the native kelp Kjelimaniella crassifolia and the introduced species Laminaria japonica in east coast of Korea were compared at each stage of their life cycles. In the zoospore stage, L. japonica grows optimally at a water temperature of $15{\~}20^{\circ}C$ achieving $95\%$ spore release in 24 hours, whereas K. crassifolia requires 48 hours to achieve $90\%$ spore release in these conditions. Good growth of gametophytes occurred at $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ in both species. L. japonica grows optimally under high light intensity ($80{\~}120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$) while K. crassifolia grows best under low light intensity ($40{\~}60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$). Growth of juvenile sporophytes of L. japonica was good in various water temperatures ($10{\~}20^{\circ}C$) and light levels ($40{\~}120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$) while K. crassifolia grew to optimal blade length only under specific conditions ($10{\~}40{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$). While the optimal culture conditions for K. crassifolia were more constrained than those of L. japonica which tolerated a wide range of water temperatures and light intensities, the laboratory culture conditions for both of these species reflect the natural environment in which these species are found.

In this study, seven species of seaweeds (Sargassum horneri, Grateloupia filicina, Kjellmaniella crassifolia, Porphyra tenera, Ecklonia stolonifera, Scytosiphon lomentaria, Agarum cribrosum) from Gangwon coast were collected for antioxidative assays. The methanol soluble and insoluble (water soluble) fraction which were prepared from 75% methanol extraction were assayed by DPPH method and deoxyribose assay. The antioxidative activity of methanol soluble fraction of Agarum, Scytosiphon and Sargassum reached to 26.60%, 24.28% and 23.40%, respectively. The antioxidative activities of methanol insoluble fractions of the Kjellmaniella and Porphyra were assayed to 29.70% and 21.01% which were higher than methanol soluble fractions with the values of 9.26% and 8.66%, respectively. The results from DPPH assay and deoxyribose assay showed the methanol soluble fractions of Agarum and Sargassum have strong antioxidative activity. However the methanol insoluble (water soluble) fractions of seaweeds did not show any meaningful antioxidant activity excepted Kjellmaniella and Porphyra.
An intertidal marine benthic algal vegetation and vertical distribution at Kangnung and it’s vicinity, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method. Marine algae identified from the area were 116 species; 15 green, 31 brown and 70 red algae. The dominant species were Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Undaria pinnatifida, Dictyota dichotoma, Gelidium amansii, Corallina pilulifera, Carpopeltis affinis, Grateloupia filicina, Pachymeniopsis elliptica and Chondrus ocellatus at study sites. The vertical distribution of intertidal marine algae was divided into three distinct zones. They were characterized by Porphyra tenera at the upper, Enteromorpha spp. and Ulva pertusa at the middle, and Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fusiformis and Pachymeniopsis elliptica at the lower zones, respectively. The vertical distribution of subtidal zone algae were characterized by Laminaria spp. at 15m depth and Kjellmaniella crassifolia at 15 to 25 m depths, whereas Agarum cribrosum was dominant at the lower zone than 25 m depth.
