The increasing variation in climatic conditions under climate change directly influences plant-microbe interactions. To account for as many variables as possible that may play critical roles in such interactions, the use of an integrated modeling approach is necessary. Here, we report for the first time a local impact assessment and adaptation study of future epidemics of kiwifruit bacterial blossom blight (KBB) in Jeonnam province, Korea, using an integrated modeling approach. This study included a series of models that integrated both the phenological responses of kiwifruit and the epidemiological responses of KBB to climatic factors with a 1 km resolution, under the RCP8.5 climate change scenario. Our results indicate that the area suitable for kiwifruit cultivation in Jeonnam province will increase and that the flowering date of kiwifruit will occur increasingly earlier, mainly due to the warming climate. Future epidemics of KBB during the predicted flowering periods were estimated using the Pss-KBB Risk Model over the predicted suitable cultivation regions, and we found location-specific, periodic outbreaks of KBB in the province through 2100. Here, we further suggest a potential, scientifically-informed, long-term adaptation strategy using a cultivar of kiwifruit with a different maturity period to relieve the pressures of future KBB risk. Our results clearly show one of the possible options for a local impact assessment and adaptation study using multiple models in an integrated way.
Ripe rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea is one of the serious diseases of postharvest kiwifruit. In order to control ripe rot on Actinidia chinensis cultivar 'Zesy002', several commercial agrofungicides were selected by an antifungal test on an artificial medium. Furthermore, disease suppression by the selected fungicides was evaluated on the kiwifruit by inoculation with a conidial suspension of B. dothidea. On the artificial media containing boscalid + fludioxonil was shown to be the most effective antifungal activity. However, in the bio-test pyraclostrobin + boscalid and iminoctadinetris were the most effective agrochemicals on the fruit. On the other hand, the infection structures of B. dothidea on kiwifruit treated with pyraclostrobin + boscalid were observed with a fluorescent microscope. Most of the fungal conidia had not germinated on the kiwifruit treated with the agrochemicals whereas on the untreated fruit the fungal conidia had mostly germinated. Electron microscopy of the fine structures showed morphological changes to the conidia and branch of hyphae on the kiwifruit pre-treated with pyraclostrobin + boscalid, indicating its suppression effect on fungal growth. Based on this observation, it is suggested that ripe rot by B. dothidea may be suppressed through the inhibition of conidial germination on the kiwifruit treated with the agrochemicals.
The occurrence of postharvest kiwifruit rot has caused great economic losses in major kiwifruit-producing countries. Several pathogens are involved in kiwifruit rot, notably Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Diaporthe species. In this study, a recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of the pathogens responsible for posing significant threats to the kiwifruit industries. The RPA primer pairs tested in this study were highly specific for detection of B. dothidea and D. eres. The detection limits of our RPA assays were approximately two picograms of fungal genomic DNA. The optimal conditions for the RPA assays were determined to be at a temperature of 39℃ maintained for a minimum duration of 5 min. We were able to detect the pathogens from kiwifruit samples inoculated with a very small number of conidia. The RPA assays enabled specific, sensitive, and rapid detection of B. dothidea and D. eres, the primary pathogens responsible for kiwifruit rots in South Korea.
Kiwifruit industry has been threatened by the emergence of kiwifruit vine decline syndrome causing plant death within one or two years from symptom appearance. The main symptoms of this syndrome are root cortex breakdown, leaf necrosis, phylloptosis, fruit skin wrinkling, and twig wilting. Kiwifruit vine decline syndrome occurred on both Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis and A. chinensis var. deliciosa in mid-summer after rainy season. Kiwifruit vine decline syndrome was turned out to be severely occurred in wettable clay soils affected by waterlogging or poor aeration. No pathogens were directly correlated with the syndrome. Kiwifruit vine decline syndrome could be expected to be efficiently prevented controlled using Bounty 71 rootstock tolerant to water stress such as waterlogging.

This study aimed to compare total phenolic, total flavonoid, and vitamin C contents, antioxidant capacities, and sensory characteristics of jangachi made from green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward) and golden kiwifruit (A. chinensis cv. Hort16A), which were cured with doenjang and kochujang. Golden kiwifruit had higher total phenolic, total flavonoid, and vitamin C contents, and antioxidant capacities than green kiwifruit. Jangachi of both cultivars of kiwifruit had generally higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and antioxidant capacities than fresh kiwifruit. Doenjang jangachi of kiwifruit had higher total phenolic contents and antioxidant capacities than kochujang jangachi. Jangachi made from golden kiwifruit cured with kochujang, following pretreatment with sugar solution, had the highest overall quality on sensory evaluation among jangachies tested herein. Together, our findings suggest that kiwifruit jangachi may serve as a good dietary source of phenolics and antioxidants.
Development of tenderizer using domestic fruits was studied. Kiwifruit was dried using various methods, and the quality of kiwifruit powder was observed during 12 week storage. Frozen kiwifruit was prepared in paste, dice, and whole flesh. After drying, paste-type kiwifruit showed 2.0 and 1.3 times higher proteolytic activity than dice and whole flesh kiwifruits, respectively. Nine hour of hot-air drying or 46 h of freeze-drying eliminated more than 90% of water from kiwifruit, during which discoloring of kiwifruit occurred. Freeze-dried powder showed 6.6 times higher yield and proteolytic activity, and resulted in almost no discolorization than those of air-dried powder. Addition of bulking agent affected the quality of hot air-dried kiwifruit powder, except color, resulting in $3.2{\sim}3.6$ times higher proteolytic activity than that without bulking agent, which is comparable to 60% of the initial freeze-dried powder content. Moisture content of kiwifruit powder with bulking agent sustained consistently during 12 week storage, whereas proteolytic activity decreased for the first 4 weeks. Freeze-drying is a preferable method to produce kiwifruit powder for tenderizer, although hot air-drying with bulking agent treatment is more economical.
This study was the tenderizing activity of fig and kiwifruit using meat cooking. Furthermore, the effects of various seasonings and flavor spices were investigated. The proteolytic activity of kiwifruit was 36,513 uM/g fruit, whereas that of fig was 24,131 uM/g fruit. The best amount of fruit for meat cooking was 3~5% for kiwifruit and 5% for fig among three different dilutions, 3%, 5% & 10%. The effect of fruit ratio showed that treatment with 'kiwifruit only' produced the best organoleptic results, and there was no significant difference between the kiwifruit and fig ratios, 3:0, 2:1, 1:1. The best marinating time for meat tenderizing by fig and kiwifruit was 6hr at $4^{\circ}C$. The best marinating temperature for meat tenderizing by fig and kiwifruit was $25^{\circ}C$ rather than $4^{\circ}C$. Fruit sauce containing basic seasonings such as soy sauce, sugar, oligosaccharides, and sesame oil had a pH of 4.64 for fig and 4.23 for kiwifruit. The addition of soy sauce, oligosaccharides, and rice wine decreased the proteolytic activity of the fruits. Fruit sauce containing basic seasonings, garlic, ginger, onion and scallion had a pH of 4.71 for fig and 4.43 for kiwifruit. Finely chopped garlic, finely chopped scallion, and pureed onion, finely chopped ginger, and pear juice, all increased the proteolytic activity of the fruits. There the fruit sauce containing seasonings and flavory spices for meat cooking improved the tenderness and preference in terms of sensory evaluation without undesirable taste or increased fruits.
In the study, the protease activity of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa Planch) cultivated in Korea was estimated, with specific examination of proteolytic effects on myofibrilar protein. The crude protease extract of kiwifruit was prepared in two ways; one in which the kiwifruit was homogenized with buffer followed by centrifugation, and the other were the supernatant was precipitated by saturated ammonium sulfate followed by dialysis. The former had 21.23 mM/mL of protease activity, which corresponded to 112.28 mM/g kiwifruit utilized, and the latter had 11.58 mM/mL and 45.80 mM/g of kiwifruit. The crude protease extract of the kiwifruit showed high specificity for casein substrate followed by bovine serum albumin, egg white, collagen, and elastin, in order. The enzyme lost proteolytic activity in acidic conditions such as pH 2-3, and at high temperatures over $60^{\circ}C$. It showed optimal activity in both pH 3.0 and pH 7.5 as well as at $40^{\circ}C$ for casein substrate and at $50^{\circ}C$ for myofibrilar protein substrate. The proteolytic activity toward casein was high with up to 0.5M salt, followed by a sharp decrease beyond this concentration. On the other hand the proteolytic activity for myofibrilar protein decreased steadily with increasing of salt concentration. Kiwifruit has been used as a for meat tenderizer for in home cooking and these results support the its tenderizing effectiveness of kiwifruit especially for Korean style marinating of meat for cooking.
This study detailed the effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on ripening and fruit quality in red-fleshed kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) stored at 0 or $10^{\circ}C$ for 20 days, and $20^{\circ}C$ for 13 days. The quality of the fruit was assessed by measuring ethylene production, respiration rate, weight loss, firmness, flesh color, soluble solids content (SSC), and titratable acidity (TA), along with a sensory evaluation. Compared to untreated kiwifruit, fruit treated with $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 24h at $20^{\circ}C$ prior to storage showed a delay in ripening and maintained fruit quality during storage. Ethylene production and respiration rate were affected by 1-MCP treatment only in fruit stored at $20^{\circ}C$, where the values were markedly higher compared to kiwifruit stored at 0 and $10^{\circ}C$. 1-MCP treatment resulted in a clear reduction in weight loss due to a delay in fruit ripening. The firmness of kiwifruit stored at 10 and $20^{\circ}C$ decreased significantly compared to fruit stored at $0^{\circ}C$, but 1-MCP treatment led to a reduction in this loss. Upon storage, SSC increased while TA decreased across all treatments. Sensory evaluation scores increased with decreasing firmness and acidity and increasing SSC. The shelf life of kiwifruit stored at $0^{\circ}C$ was extended without any chilling injury or color changes. In summary, the results show that 1-MCP treatment can potentially maintain quality and delay ripening of red-fleshed kiwifruit stored at all storage temperatures.
Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, the causal agent of bacterial canker, is currently causing severe economic losses to kiwifruit production worldwide. The pathogen has affected green-fleshed kiwifruit cutlivars and yellow-fleshed kiwifruit cultivars since 1988 and 2006 in Korea, respectively. In recent years, the biovar 3 strains of P. syringae pv. actinidiae were introduced through imported contaminated pollens and have rapidly spread to neighboring kiwiruit orchards by secondary infection, leading to outbreaks of bacterial canker and tremendous damages on yellow- and red-fleshed kiwifruit cultivars. In this review, we summarize the various management practices of bacterial canker of kiwifruit such as disease escaping, cultural practices, blocking of dissemination, early diagnosis, eradication of inoculum sources, chemical control, and trunk injection on the basis of our research works and field experiences and important research products conducted during the last three decades in the world. Finally, we propose a manual for the efficient management of the disease that can be practically utilized at the farmers' orchards in order to keep kiwifruit vines healthy in the future.
