  • As a single arrival traveltime, maximum energy arrival traveltime has been known as the most proper operator for Kirchhoff migration. In case of the model having the simple structure, both the first arrival traveltime and the maximum energy arrival traveltime can be used as the correct operators for Kirchhoff migration. However for some model having the complex and high velocity contrast structure, the migration using the first arrival traveltime can't give the correct depth section. That is, traveltime to be required in Kirchhoff migration is the maximum energy traveltime, but, needs considerably more calculation time than that of first arrival. In this paper, we propose the method for calculating the traveltime approximated to the maximum energy arrival using one-way wave equation. After defining the WAS(Wrap Around Suppression) factor to be used for calculating the first arrival traveltime using one-way wave equation as the function of lateral grid interval and depth and considering the delay time of source wavelet. we calculate the traveltime approximated to the maximum energy arrival. to verify the validity of this traveltime, we applied this to the migraion for simple structure and complex structure and compared the depth section with that obtained by using the first arrival traveltime.

  • A heuristic physical theory of diffraction (PTD) for an acoustic impedance wedge is proposed. This method is based on Ufimtsev's three-dimensional PTD, which is derived for an acoustic soft or hard wedge. We modify the original PTD according to the process of physical optics (or the Kirchhoff approximation) to obtain a 3D heuristic diffraction model for an impedance wedge. In principle, our result is equivalent to Luebbers' model presented in electromagnetism. Moreover, our approach provides a useful insight into the theoretical basis of the existing heuristic diffraction methods. The derived heuristic PTD is applied to an arbitrary impedance polygon, and a simple PTD formula is derived as a supplement to the physical optics formula.

  • In this case of the mobile communication of vehicles with satellite, the signal at attenuation is due to roadside trees. To analyze this signal attenuation, a roadside tree was modeled as different obstacles of rectangular type and then using Fresnel and Kirchhoff diffraction theory, a formula was derived for signal intensity variation caused by the roadside tree model. The signal attenuation of a roadside tree model was obtained by numerical analysis with variation of the elevation angle, the position and distance between a receiver and a transmitter, and these were compared with experimental results. The results of comparison between theoretical and experimental values show, as expected, the good agreement of the signal attenuation trend.

  • The objective of this research is to design blade planform to reduce high speed impulsive(HSI) noise from a non-lifting helicopter rotor using CFD method and optimization techniques. As for the aero-acoustic analysis, CFD technique for aerodynamic analysis and Kirchhoff's method for the acoustic analysis were used. As for the optimization method, Kriging-based genetic algorithm(GA) model as a high-fidelity optimization method was chosen. Design variables and constraints are determined for arbitrary blade planform. The result shows that the optimized blade planform with high swept-back and taper ratio can reduce HSI noise by suppressing generation of the strong shock wave on blade surface and propagation of the noise to the farfield flow region.

  • 126-kHz bistatic sea surface scattering measurements were conducted in the shallow waters off the east coasts of Korea. The range from source to receiver was altered to change the scattering angle at the grazing angles of 38% and 52% . Unlike bottom scattering signal, the arrival time and the amplitude of sea surface scattering signals were varied due to the fluctuation of sea surface. The measured forward scattering strengths were compared to model predictions of Kirchhoff approximation and small slope approximation. In overall, the tendency of the scattering strengths showed reasonable agreement among the experimental data, Kirchhoff approximation, and small slope approximation.

  • Sound generation and radiation from the duct-rotor system are calculated numerically. The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor are calculated by using a time-marching fiee-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake. Acoustic free field due to a rotating rotor is obtained by Lowson's equation. Using Kirchhoff source, rotating sources are modeled as stationary ones and can be inserted in the thin body boundary element method. The Kirchhoff source is validated through calculation of acoustic pressure due to a rotating point force. The thin body boundary element method (thin body BEM) is validated through calculation of acoustic radiation of ducted dipole. Using Kirchhoff source and thin body BEM, acoustic radiation of a ducted rotating source is calculated. Acoustic shielding is observed by inserting a duct and shows different phenomena at each major frequency. Acoustic radiation of a real duct-rotor system is also calculated using this method and the ducted acoustic field is significantly different from rotor only.

  • The contrast (fish body to medium ratio) of density and sound speed were measured to estimate acoustic scattering from small juvenile cod (Gadus macrocephalus) with the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode backscatter model. The density contrast was measured by the density-bottle method and the sound speed contrast was estimated by the time of flight method. The results revealed that the measured density contrasts of juvenile cod varied between 1.003 and 1.029 (mean = 1.014, S.D. = 0.01). On the other hand, sound speed contrasts varied between 1.039 and 1.041 (mean = 1.041, S.D. = 0.001). The relationship between averaged target strength (TS) and total length (TL) established by the model were <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 68.8 and <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 69.4, respectively.

  • Many approximate models for interaction between a flexible structure and an infinite external acoustic medium have been developed for a long time. Among them, Doubly Asymptotic Approximations (DAAs) are very well known approximations. But, it has shortcomings in intermediate frequency range and can't fully describe the acoustic medium. So, this paper presents the modified approximation by applying the retarded and advanced potentials to Kirchhoff's formula. It describes the external acoustic medium more in detail and shows a good result in early time transient responses when it was applied to a spherical shell. Through a spherical shell interacting with external acoustic medium, the transient responses for the proposed model is compared to Huang's exact solution and DAA2.

  • A polygon-wise constant curvature natural element approximation is presented in this paper for the numerical implementation of the abstract Kirchhoff plate model. The strict continuity requirement in the displacement field is relaxed by converting the area integral of the curvatures into the boundary integral along the Voronoi boundary. Curvatures and bending moments are assumed to be constant within each Voronoi polygon, and the Voronoi-polygon-wise constant curvatures are derived in a selective manner for the sake of the imposition of essential boundary conditions. The numerical results illustrating the proposed method are also given.

  • In this proposed work, computational, finite element model far multi-delaminated plates will be developed. In the current analysis procedures of multi-delaminated plates, different elements are used at delaminated and undelaminated region separately. In the undelaminated region, plate element based on Mindlin plate theory is used in order to obtain accurate results of out-of-plane displacement of thick plate. And for delaminated region, plate element based on Kirchhoff plate theory is considered. To satisfy the displacement continuity conditions, displacement vector based on Kirchhoff theory is transformed to displacement of transition element. Element mass and stiffness matrices of each region (delaminated, undelaminated and transition region) will be assembled for global matrix.
