The kinetic analyses for thermal products of alpha-, gamma- and delta-tocopherols during heating as functions of temperature and time were studied. Alpha-, gamma- and delta-tocopherols dissolved in glycerol were heated at $100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ for $5{\sim}60$ min. The thermal products were separated by hexane extraction and analyzed by HPLC using a reversed phase ${\mu}-Bondapak$$C_{18}-column$ with two kinds of elution solvents in a gradient mode. The formation kinetics of thermal products of tocopherols followed a first-order kinetic model. The formation rate of thermal products of tocopherols was dependent on heating temperatures and heating times. The activation energy and enthalpy for the thermal products of ${\gamma}-and$${\delta}-tocopherols$ were higher than those for ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ as in the case of the oxidative degradation kinetics of tocopherol. The magnitude order of the activation energy was ${\gamma}->{\delta}->{\alpha}-tocopherol$.
The combustion kinetics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was studied by the dynamic model which accounts for the thermal decomposition of polymer at any time. The kinetic analysis was performed by a conventional nonisothermal thermogravimetric (TG) technique at several heating rates between 10 and 40 K/min in air atmosphere. The thermal decomposition of PET in air atmosphere was found to be a complex process composed of at least two stages for which kinetic values can be calculated. The combustion kinetic analysis of PET gave apparent activation energy for the first stage of $257.3{\sim}269.9\;kJ/mol$, with a value of $140.5{\sim}213.8\;kJ/mol$ for the second stage. To verify the effectiveness of the kinetic analysis method used in this work, the kinetic analysis results were compared with those of various analytical methods. The kinetic parameters were also compared with values of the pyrolysis of PET in nitrogen atmosphere.
Sorption of $Ni^{2+}$ in aqueous solution was studied using montmorillonite. The experimental and equilibrium data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. From the kinetics data for nickel sorption onto montmorillonite, the diffusion of $Ni^{2+}$ inside the clay particles was the dorminant step controlling the sorption rate and as such more important for $Ni^{2+}$ sorption than the external mass transfer. $Ni^{2+}$ was sorbed due to strong interactions with the active sites of the sorbent and the sorption process tends to follow the pseudo second-order kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^{\circ},\;{\Delta}H^{\circ},\;{\Delta}S^{\circ}$) indicated a non spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process while the positive low value of the entropy change suggests low randomness of the solid/solution interface during the uptake of $Ni^{2+}$ by montmorilionite. Heavy metals such as $Ni^{2+}$ in aqueous bodies can effectively be sorbed by montmorillonite.
Enzyme kinetics data play a vital role in the design of reactors and control of processes. In the present study, kinetic studies on pectinases were carried out. Partially purified polymethylgalacturonase (PMG) and polygalacturonase (PG) were the two pectinases studied. The plot of initial rate vs. initial substrate concentration did not follow the conventional Michaelis-Menten kinetics, but substrate inhibition was observed. For PMG, maximum rate was attained at an initial pectin concentration of 3 g/l, whereas maximum rate was attained when the initial substrate concentration of 2.5 g/l of polygalacturonic acid for PG I and PG II. The kinetic data were fitted to five different kinetic models to explain the substrate inhibition effect. Among the five models tested, the combined mechanism of protective diffusion limitation of both high and inhibitory substrate concentrations (semi-empirical model) explained the inhibition data with 96-99% confidence interval.
This paper presents a fault detection strategy that discriminates the faulty sensor and that detects the component fault using a bank of observers for the system in which sensor fault and component fault can occur simultaneously. Observers as many as the number of measurements are designed, and each observer uses measurements excluding sequentially one measurement, to estimate the state variables. The faulty sensor can be found out by comparing each state variable from different observer. Next, component fault can be detected by using measurements from the sensors excluding the faulty sensor. The suggested strategy is applied to a nonisothermal, series reaction with unknown reaction kinetics in a CSTR. This strategy is found out to perform well even in the case that the sensor and component fault occur simultaneously. Since each observer is designed to be independent of reaction kinetics, this strategy is not affected by the model uncertainty and nonlinearity of the reaction kinetics.
Tocopherols are important lipid-phase antioxidants that are subject to heat degradation. Therefore, kinetic analyses for oxidative degradation of tocopherols as a function of temperatures and times were performed. Alpha-, gamma- and delta-tocopherols dissolved in glycerol were heated at 100${\sim}$250$^{\circ}C$ for 5~60 min. Oxidized tocopherols were analyzed by HPLC using a reversed phase ${\mu}$-Bondapak C$_{18}$-column with two kinds of elution solvent systems in a gradient mode. The degradation kinetics for tocopherols followed a first-order kinetic model. The rate of tocopherol degradation was dependent on heating temperatures. The degradation rate constants for ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$-tocopherols were higher than those for ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. The experimental activation energies of ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$- tocopherols were 2.51, 6.05 and 5.34 kcal/mole, respectively. The experimental activation energies for the oxidative degradation of ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$-tocopherols were higher than that of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol.

Recently, silicone is being used for LED chip lens due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stresses, which cause optical birefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, a finite element analysis was conducted for the curing of silicone during molding. For the analysis of the curing process, a dynamic cure kinetics model was derived based on the results of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) testing and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation results showed that a step cure cycle reduced abrupt reaction heat and showed a decrease in the residual stresses.
Recently, interests to remove nitrogen in the nitritation process have increased because of its economical advantages, since it could be a short-cut process to save both oxygen for nitrification and carbon for denitrification compared to a typical nitrification. However, the kinetics related with the nitritation process has not yet been fully understood. Furthermore, many useful models which have been successfully used for wastewater treatment processes cannot be used to estimate effluent nitrite concentration for evaluating performance of the nitritation process, since the process rate equations and population of microorganisms for nitrogen removal in these models have been set up only for the condition of full nitrification. Therefore, the present study was conducted to estimate an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process with a concept of enzymatic inhibition kinetics based on long-term laboratory experiments. Using a nonlinear least squares regression method, kinetic parameters were accurately determined. By setting up a process rate equation along with a mass balance equation of the nitrite-oxidizing step, an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process was then successfully estimated.
Escherichia coli transcription termination factor Rho catalyzes the unwinding of RNA/DNA duplex in reactions that are coupled to ATP binding and hydrolysis. We report here the kinetic mechanism of presteady state ATP binding and hydrolysis by the Rho-RNA complex. Presteady state chemical quenched-flow technique under multiple turnover condition was used to probe the kinetics of ATP binding and hydrolysis by the Rho-RNA complex. The quenched-flow presteady state kinetics of ATP hydrolysis studies show that three ATPs are bound to the Rho-RNA complex with a rate of $4.4\;{\times}\;10^5M^{-1}s^{-1}$, which are subsequently hydrolyzed at a rate of $88s^{-1}$ and released during the initiation process. Global fit of the presteady state ATP hydrolysis kinetic data suggests that a rapid-equilibrium binding of ATP to Rho-RNA complex occurs prior to the first turnover and the chemistry step is not reversible. The initial burst of three ATPs hydrolysis was proposed to be involved in the initialization step that accompanies proper complex formation of Rho-RNA. Based on these results a kinetic model for initiation process for Rho-RNA complex was proposed relating the mechanism of ATP binding and hydrolysis by Rho to the structural transitions of Rho-RNA complex to reach the steady state phase, which is implicated during translocation along the RNA.
Transesterification of BHET (Bis (2-Hydroxyethyl) Terephthalate), monomer of PET (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate) to BHBT (Bis (4-Hydroxybutyl Terephthate), monomer of PBT (Poly Butylene Terephthalate), using 1,4-BD (1,4-butanediol) were investigated. Zinc acetate was used as a catalyst for the reaction. Amounts of BHET, EG, and THF (Tetrahydrofuran) in a batch reactor were measured for determining the reaction kinetics. Mathematical models of the batch reactor for the transesterification reaction were developed and used to characterize the reaction kinetics and the composition distribution of the reaction products. Model predictions for the transesterification were in good agreement with experimental results.
