Development of Performance Indicators Based on Balanced Score Card for School Food Service Facilities (균형성과표(BSC)개념을 적응한 학교급식 운영성과 측정지표 개발)

  • This study raised the necessity of developing performance indicators for measuring the management efficiency and effectiveness of school food service, and as a means of helping its implementation, a balanced score card (BSC) approach developed by Norton and Kaplan was adopted. This study established BSC in seven phases through literature: Phase 1 Defining a school food service and the scope of working activities, Phase 2 Establishing the vision of a school food service, Phase 3 Setting strategic goals, Phase 4 Identifying critical success factors (CSFs), Phase 5 Developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Phase 6 Extracting cause and effect relationship, and Phase 7 Completing a preliminary BSC. The preliminary BSC was fumed into a survey, which was administered to food service related people working at the Office of Education and School Food Service including 16 offices,209 dietitians, 48 school administrators both from self-operated and contract-managed, and 9 experts in areas related to school food service. They were asked questions about strategies from 4 different perspectives,12 CSFs, 39 KPls, and the cause and effect relationships among them. As a result, among the CSFs based on 4 different perspectives, all factors other than ' zero sum on profit/loss ' from the financial perspective turned out to be valid. In terms of KPIs, manufacturing cost percentages, casualty loss count/reduction rates, school foodervice participation rates, and sales goal achievement rates were found to be valid from the financial perspective, while student satisfaction index, faculty satisfaction index, leftover ratio, nutrition educational performance count, index of evaluating nutrition education, customer claim count/reduction rate, handling customer claim count/reduction rate, and parent satisfaction index were found to be valid from the customers' perspective. Besides, nutritional requirement sufficient ratio, nutritional management score, food poisoning outbreak count, employee safety accident count, sanitary inspection assessment index, meals per labor hour (productivity index), computerization ratio, operational management index, and purchase management assessment index were also found to be valid from the perspective of internal business processes. From the perspective of innovation and learning, employee turnover ratio/rate of absenteeism, annual education and training count, employee satisfaction index, human resource management assessment index, annual menu-related customer feedback, food service information index for employees and parents/schools were also found to be valid. The significance of this study is to present indices for measuring overall performance of school lunch food service operations without putting any limitation on types of school food service management, and to help correctly assess the contribution of the current types of school food service management to schools and students.   • A growing number of Korean companies are trying to expand their business area into global market due to saturation in the Korean domestic market. Home shopping industry arriving on mature stage is faced with less growth recently. CJ O Shopping which is a top ranked home shopping company in Korea, has been showing meaningful performances by earlier moving to global market with thorough preparations. CJ O Shopping's global marketing strategy focused on asian countries including China, India, Vietnam, and Japan is going successfully, which enables top ranked on-line retailing company in asia as well as in Korea. CJ O Shopping effectively penetrated into overseas market with both core competence based on Korean home shopping model and rigorous preliminary study on target market. Especially shoppertainment (Shopping+Entertainment) that is unique feature of globally competitive Korean home shopping created huge differentiations in target market. Also choosing the influential local partner, sharing the business goals, and building the joint venture could make stable operations, thereby easily earning of well-established awareness from target consumers. A step ahead entry of competitors and intensive localization of CJ O Shopping's core competence for arriving safe in target market were additional key factors for global marketing success. We can extract above key factors for success as implications of case study on CJ O Shopping's global marketing, and expect those factors to be spread into lots of Korean companies and utilized as successful strategies for global marketing.

How can Sporting Goods Retailers Achieve Sustainable Success? : Concept of Sport Brand Authenticity (스포츠 용품 유통기업은 어떻게 지속가능한 성공을 이룰 수 있는가? : 스포츠 브랜드 진정성 개념)

  • Purpose - As society continues to develop and the economy grows, consumer participation in sports activities and consumption of sports-related goods are steadily increasing. Nowadays, Spyder, the sporting goods company has achieved great success in the Korean market. In the launching, Spyder tried to communicate the sport authentic brand value to consumers as successful sporting goods brands did. The purpose of this study is to identify the key factors influencing the successful branding strategies of sporting goods retailers. In the process of value trading to the consumer, the concept of authenticity which includes 'originality', 'truth' and 'genuine' is considered as one of the most important factor for branding. This study tries to define the brand authenticity in sporting goods retailer and to develop measurement scale. This study suggests a new paradigm for sports brand research and implications for management of domestic sporting goods retailer that is losing the direction to develop brand value. Research design, data, and methodology - This research consists of two parts of study. The first study is a qualitative research to define sport brand authenticity and measuring items through expert interviews. The second study is the development of scales to the authenticity. And reliability and validity of the scales are verified by quantitative methods. A total of 500 respondents were surveyed and the statistical tests were conducted by dividing two groups. Results - This study defines the authenticity of sports brand which is divided into four dimensions; behavioral authenticity, performance authenticity, spiritual authenticity and virtuous authenticity. And this newly defined four dimensions measurement tool is proved statistically in this study in terms of reliability and validity. Conclusions - For the success of sporting goods retailers, it is important to understand the value of sport and to communicate it with customers effectively. This study suggests a tool for sport brand authenticity and also significant implications for brand strategies. In addition, every entity which is related with sport can apply the measurement scale of this study to understand their position and find direction in terms of authentic sport value.

The Strategies for Cyber Shopping Mall Business: A Comparative Case Study (사업 기반에 따른 인터넷 종합쇼핑몰 고객전략에 관한 연구)

  • Internet-based shopping business spread rapidly in Korea. Companies are trying to develop and use various strategic competences. The strategies employed by those companies include activities related to the design of shopping site, market positioning, assistance of purchasing process, payment mechanism, and provision of various consumer services. However, the success of these strategies depends on various environmental factors and internal capability of the companies. In this study, I examined four successful Internet shopping mall companies and compared them to draw useful guidelines for Internet-based intermediary business. These four companies were selected because they are all considered successful by now, but brought different background. We found follows. First, each company tried to economize their own historical and developmental background. All of the selected companies were alike in their focus on the whole Internet user group. Customer needs analysis was performed more systematically. The Importance of customer information and the use of it are not sufficient. Second, Each companies consistently emphasized the importance of market-related activities. Despite the differences in initial states, all companies used similar strategies and had similar focus in target market and products. Conclusively, implications from this research for Internet shopping business can be summarized as follows. First, One of the important future directions for Internet shopping mall business is to broaden target market. Second, the provisions of carefully designed customized services are one success factor. Third, As customer traffic increased, the provision of differential customer service becomes a key success factor.

Success Factors of the Korean Corporate Workouts (이산선택모형을 이용한 워크아웃기업의 회생요인 분석)

  • This paper explores the empirical performances of the workout companies with special interests in the effectiveness of corporate reorganizing tools on their revitalization. In the empirical analysis it considers the criteria of success or failure in restructuring from both creditors' and debtors' perspectives. The key results are summarized as follows. First, the initial conditions on the debt structure of the workout companies are significantly related to the revitalization from both creditors' and debtors' point of view. Second, the debt restructuring instruments are insignificant in the success of corporate turnarounds while the debt-to-equity conversion has been a relatively effective tool. Third, the self-restructuring efforts, employment downsizing and governance reshuffling do not affect the performances significantly. The higher importance of initial conditions than corporate restructuring efforts may imply that Korean corporate workouts serve better to the needs of creditor financial institutions which are to maximize debt recovery and of the government which is to overcome financial crisis.

A Comparative Study of the Idol Systems in Korea and Japan Focusing on IZ*ONE (한·일 아이돌 시스템 비교연구)

  • The uniqueness of the K-Pop 'idol' culture, which is a key area of its success, can be found not only through the acceptance of diverse cultures and the strengthening of the performance capacity, but also by the effective utilization of new technological environment. As a result, the Korean idol system, which is distinguished from the Japanese idol system, is established. And these systems are evolving with new technological environments. This paper examines the process of evolution of the Korean idol system that adapts to the technical environment through the case of the idol girl group 'IZ*ONE'. 'IZ*ONE' not only achieved rapid success by actively utilizing SNS and new media and producing interactive narratives, but also establishing stable expansion and homogeneity of fandom through interactive rituals. By comparing the evolution and achievement of such a system with the Japanese idol system, we will be able to present the factors of K-Pop success more clearly.

Analysis of Success and Failure Factors of OTT Service Contents According to the Rating: Focus on Netflix (평점에 따른 OTT 서비스 콘텐츠의 성공과 실패 요인 분석: 넷플릭스를 중심으로)

  • This study explores multiple variables of an OTT service for discovering hidden relationship between rating and the other variables of each successful and failed content, respectively. In order to extract key variables that are strongly correlated to the rating across the contents, this work analyzes 170 Netflix original dramas and 419 movies. These contents are classified as success and failure by using the rating site IMDb, respectively. The correlation between the contents, which are classified via rating, and variables such as violence, lewdness and running time are analyzed to determine whether a certain variable appears or not in each successful and failure content. This study employs a regression analysis to discover correlations across the variables as a main analysis method. Since the correlation between independent variables should be low, check multicollinearity and select the variable. Cook's distance is used to detect and remove outliers. To improve the accuracy of the model, a variable selection based on AIC(Akaike Information Criterion) is performed. Finally, the basic assumptions of regression analysis are identified by residual diagnosis and Dubin Watson test. According to the whole analysis process, it is concluded that the more director awards exist and the less immatatable tend to be successful in movies. On the contrary, lower fear tend to be failure in movies. In case of dramas, there are close correlations between failure dramas and lower violence, higher fear, higher drugs.

  • Commercialization of public technology is the transfer of government-led scientific and technological innovation and R&D results to the private sector, and is recognized as a key achievement driving economic growth. Therefore, in order to activate technology transfer, various machine learning methods are being studied to identify success factors or to match public technology with high commercialization potential and demanding companies. However, public technology commercialization data is in the form of a table and has a problem that machine learning performance is not high because it is in an imbalanced state with a large difference in success-failure ratio. In this paper, we present a method of utilizing CTGAN to resolve imbalances in public technology data in tabular form. In addition, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a comparative experiment with SMOTE, a statistical approach, was performed using actual public technology commercialization data. In many experimental cases, it was confirmed that CTGAN reliably predicts public technology commercialization success cases.

Caffe Bene: Creating Values for Customers

  • Caffe Bene, one of the most notable coffeehouse chain brands in Republic of Korea, gives us some thought-provoking issues in terms of sustainable success. Despite harsh competition among various coffeehouse brands, Caffe Bene has been accomplished astonishing outcomes in domestic market and now ranked 2nd place in sales among the global coffeehouse franchise in 2010 and 2011. These achievements were possible mainly because Caffe Bene adopted distinctive shop design, maintained aggressive marketing strategy, developed new menu, and combined the unique Korean culture with ordinary concept of café to make its place attractive. However, since Korean coffeehouse market is getting saturated and consumers are becoming savvy about coffee, Caffe Bene needs to find a new solution to overcome growth stagnation. Besides, many experts pointed out that irrational increase in the number of stores might hurt its business in the aspect of managing distribution channel and providing consistent services. Also, customers of Caffe Bene have shown that it has to complement its critical weaknesses: inferior coffee taste and relatively high price for a cup of coffee. Especially, some people view that the company is shifting its high rental fee, interior cost and PPL marketing cost to consumers by charging high price for coffee. To get over the problems, Caffe Bene is currently using C/S Consumer Management System though experts are questioning about the efficacy because of the conflict between purpose of the system and the headquarters' plan. Present CEO Kim also announced that the company will complete its logistics system in the latter half of 2012 to provide stores with more high quality coffee beans to improve taste of coffee. Thus, in this case, we describe how Caffe Bene succeeded in Korean market and enumerate its key success factors. Also, we specify the long-term goals of Caffe Bene and introduce the current policies and strategies to show how the company is working on to achieve its ultimate goal. By reading and analyzing this business case, students could get useful insights regarding franchise management and think about issues on competing in a saturated market. Also, it would be worthwhile to generate creative solutions for the problems that Caffe Bene is now facing to broaden the practical perspective.

  • The KSTAR device succeeded in first plasma generation on $13^{th}$ June of 2008 through comprehensive system test and commissioning. Among various kinds of the key factors that decisively affected the project, success in the construction and assembly of the major tokamak structure was most important one. Every engineering aspects of each structure were finally confirmed in the integrated commissioning period, and there were no severe troubles and failures prevented the KSTAR device from operating during the commissioning and the first plasma experiments. As a result, all of the experiences and technologies achieved through the KSTAR construction process are expected to be important fundamentals for future construction projects of superconducting fusion devices. This paper summarizes key engineering features of the major structures and of the machine assembly.
