  • Studies on geographical distributions and relative population densities of the vector mites of tsutsugamushi disease were carried out in October 1996 at 12 locations of the mid south inland of the Korean peninsula, where chigger mites have been never studied. Of 177 field rodents and insectivores collected. 154 (87.0%) were Apodemus ngrarius. Total 25,707 chigger mites were collected and 14 species were identified. of which Leptotrombidium pnllidum was predominant (79.8%) and L. palpate the next (8.9%) . L. pallidum, the vector species, was widely distributed in all study areas, showing the highest density at Cho-o 2-dong, Sangju-si (chigger index 201.8), and the lowest at Tanwol-dong. Chungiu-si (chigger index 40.7) . The other vector species, L. scutellare was found only at the southern part of the study area such as Yobae and Mipyong, Kumrung gun and Vnsu , Kimchon-si. The northernmost areas of the L. scutellcre distribution were coincided with the areas where actual mean air temperature is above 10.0%. Among 157 A. ograrius sera tested, 48.3% was Karp, 1.7% william and 3.3% Kuroki. The rest of the sera were not able to determine the sexto-type because of the cross antigen-antibody reactions among the tested sero-types.

  • Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) provokes fatal infections in AIDS patients that have deficient immune functions and patients that have cellular immune responses repressed after bone marrow transplantation. A new candidate for therapeutic against HCMV is needed because conventional treatments as ganciclovir, acyclovir, cidofovir, and foscarnet cytosine used currently are improper due to their side effects and advent of resistant HCMV. In this study, peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) against UL54 (DNA polymerase) and UL97 (phosphotransferase) that were essential in replication of HCMV were applied in inhibition of replication of HCMV. From the results of this study, 4 PNAs $_{PNA}UL97-1$, $_{PNA}UL97-2$, $_{PNA}UL54-3$, and $_{PNA}UL54-4$ showed 3.7, 3.1, 1.7, and 1.6 folds of inhibition effect against replication of HCMV in the human fibroblast cells. These PNA suggest a novel possibility as therapeutic against HCMV.

  • The authors observed a 27-year-old male patient who came to the Infirmary of Kyungpook National University Hospital who had complained of dull pain in right mandibular angle area 1 month ago. As a result of careful analysis of clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings, the authors diagnosed it as Ewing's sarcoma and obtained the results as follows: 1. In clinical examination, main clinical symptoms were continuous dull pain and gingival swelling on the 2nd and 3rd molar area of the right mandible. 2. In radiographic examination, ill-defined radiolucent area was seen on mandibular right angle area, and apparent periosteal reaction of sun-ray spicule was emanated from the lingual cortex of mandibular angle area. And computed tomograph also revealed moderate-defined 3. soft tissue mass of the same area. In histopathological examination, small round-shaped, and closely packed cells with scanty cytoplasm were observed in this specimen, and positive reaction in PAS staining was also observed.

  • Purpose : To acquire the useful diagnostic information through the analysis of the clinical and radiological characteristics of mandibular unicystic ameloblastoma. Materials and Methods : The researchers compared and analysed the clinical and radiological features of 79 cases of mandibular unicystic ameloblastoma confirmed by histopathlogic examination. Results : The results of our research showed that unicystic ameloblastomas occurred more frequently in males than in females and the incidence is the highest in the 2nd and 3rd decades. These lesions occurred most frequently in angle-ramus area, mandibular molar area, and anterior area in descending order respectively $68.4\%$, $24\%$, and $7.6\%$. These lesions had smooth ($54.4\%$) rather than undulating ($45.6\%$) borders. These lesions showed well- defined borders in $59.5\%$ among all the cases. Root resorption and loss of lamina dura were observed as $55.7\%$ and $58.5\%$ respectively. Displacement of mandibular canal was observed in $55.9\%$ among all the related cases. Internal pattern of lesional radiolucency was observed as even ($49.4\%$) or uneven ($50.6\%$). Conclusion : These results would be helpful in diagnosing of mandibular unicystic ameloblastoma. • RNA polymerase beta subunit gene (rpoB) mutation of rifampin-resistant Mycobacteria was analyzed using nucleotide sequence of rpoB DNA (351 bp) containing rifampin resistant region, $rif^r$. For this purpose, we collected rifampin-resistant Mycobacteria that were identified by conventional culture method from Masan National Hospital and The Korean Institute of Tuberculosis and performed analysis of nucleotide sequence of rpoB of them. We found various mutations of rpoB linked rifampin resistant gene from rifampin-resistant Mycobacteria. From this study, we identified mutations of different codons from codons that have been reported recently.

  • An efficiency of Monte Carlo (MC) docking simulations was examined for the prediction of chiral discrimination by cyclodextrins. Docking simulations were performed with various computational parameters for the chiral discrimination of a series of 17 enantiomers by $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD) or by 6-amino-6-deoxy-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (am-$\beta$-CD). A total of 30 sets of enantiomeric complexes were tested to find the optimal simulation parameters for accurate predictions. Rigid-body MC docking simulations gave more accurate predictions than flexible docking simulations. The accuracy was also affected by both the simulation temperature and the kind of force field. The prediction rate of chiral preference was improved by as much as 76.7% when rigid-body MC docking simulations were performed at low-temperatures (100 K) with a sugar22 parameter set in the CHARMM force field. Our approach for MC docking simulations suggested that the conformational rigidity of both the host and guest molecule, due to either the low-temperature or rigid-body docking condition, contributed greatly to the prediction of chiral discrimination.

  • A 21-year-old woman presented with facial asymmetry. Crepitus and clicking of the temporomandibular joint were noted. The midline deviated 5.5 mm to the left, and secondary malocclusion was observed. Panoramic and cone-beam computed tomographic images showed an irregular and exophytic bony mass on the anteromedial surface of the right mandibular condyle. A 3-phase bone scan revealed increased tracer uptake on the affected side. The lesion was treated with excision and reshaping under the diagnosis of osteochondroma confirmed by a histopathological examination. The lesion recurred after 3 years, and the patient underwent condylectomy. Mandibular condylar osteochondroma is often resected because it causes functional and aesthetic problems, but it rarely recurs. To the best of our knowledge, only 2 cases of recurrent osteochondromas of the mandibular condyle have been reported previously. Surgical treatment of the osteochondroma should be performed considering the possibility of recurrence, and long-term follow-up is recommended.

  • The strain ageing behaviour of quenched Zircaloy--4 has been studied as a function of ageing time and temperature in the temperature range 523 to 588 K for a short-ageing time of 1 to 52 seconds. At the test conditions, the strain ageing stress increased with ageing time and temperature at a strain rate of 5.55$\times$10$^{-4}$ sec$^{-1}$ . Applying stress on the Quenched Zircaloy-4, the strain ageing effect indicated following two stages: an initial stage having an activation energy of 0.39 ev considered to be due to Snoek type ordering of intersitial oxygen atoms in the stress field of a dislocation and a second stage having an activation energy of 0.60 ev, due to mainly long-range diffusion of oxygen atoms.

  • Multiple myeloma is a malignant plasma cell tumor that is thought to originate proliferation of a single clone of abnormal plasma cell resulting production of a whole monoclonal paraprotein. The authors experienced a case of multiple myeloma with severe mandibular osteolytic lesions in 46-year-old female. As a result of careful analysis of clinical, radiological, histopathological features, and laboratory findings, we diagnosed it as multiple myeloma, and the following results were obtained ; 1. Main clinical symptoms were intermittent dull pain on the mandibular body area, abnormal sensation of lip and pain due to the fracture on the right clavicle. 2. Laboratory findings revealed M-spike, reversed serum albumin-globulin ratio, markedly elevated ESR and hypercalcemia. 3. Radiographically, multiple osteolytic punched-out radiolucencies were evident on the skull, zygoma, jaw bones, ribs, clavicle and upper extremities. Enlarged liver and increased uptakes on the lesional sites in RN scan were also observed. 4. Histopathologically, markedly hypercellular marrow with sheets of plasmoblasts and megakaryocytes were also observed.
