  • A statistical model for the relation between KARP membership and articles published in the KARP Journal on the yearly basis was obtained by using the least-squares method. From this, KARP membership potent to publish the KARP Journal up to 4 numbers a year were projected. It is revealed that at least 650 KARP members are needed.

  • NHERF ($Na^+/H^+$ exchanger regulatory factor) and E3KARP (NHE3 kinase A regulatory protein) play important roles in membrane targeting, trafficking and sorting of ion channels, transmembrane receptors and signaling proteins in many tissues. Each of these proteins contains two PDZ (PSD-95/Dlg-1/ZO-1) domains, which mediate the assembly of transmembrane and cytosolic proteins into functional signal transduction complexes. The interaction between NHERF and E3KARP was investigated by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (BIAcore), fluorescence measurement, His-tagged pull-down experiment, and size-exclusion column (SEC) chromatography. BIAcore experiments revealed that NHERF bound to E3KARP with an apparent $K_D$ of 7 nM. Fluorescence emission spectra of the NHERF-E3KARP complex suggested that the tight interaction between these proteins was accompanied by significant conformational changes in one or both. The CD spectra of NHERF and E3KARP show that the conformational changes of these proteins were dependent on pH and temperature. These results implicate that the NHERF-E3KARP complex allows intracellular signaling complexes to form through PDZ-PDZ interactions.

  • We selected the adequate cell line to be used for propagation and plaquing of R. tsutsugamushi in laboratory and identified R. tsutsugamushi serotype cultured in LuMA cells by nested PCR. As in this study, we concluded that. 1. LuMA cell was suitable for the study of the biology of rickettsiae-host cell interaction. 2. The plaque-forming unit (PFU) per ml of R. tsutsugamushi Karp strain propagated in embryonated egg yolk sacs was $10^{8.8}$ and the PFU/ml of Gilliam strain was $10^{7.1}$. 3. The rate and extent of cytopathic changes depended on the PFU titer of R. tsutsugamushi. 4. PCR with nested primer pairs was useful for identification of R. tsutsugamushi serotype cultured in human embryonic lung cells.

  • In Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, antibodies against strains of Orientia tsutsugamushi, Kato, Karp and Gilliam, were produced in order to investigate their longevity and cross-reactivities to their corresponding homologous and heterologous antigens. By immunofluorescence assay (IFA) of IgG and IgM, it was shown that the immunity to the homologous strains persisted at a higher level (longevity of at least 34 weeks with higher IFA titers). On the other hand, the immunity to the heterologous strains persisted at a lower level (longevity of 10 to 34 weeks with lower IFA titers). Since infection with one strain of O. tsutsugamushi does not preclude reinfection with other strains, understanding of the antigenic diversity of O. tsutsugamushi and duration of the immunity to both homologous and heterologous strain is very important in diagnosis of scrub typhus.

  • Among wild chipmunks, Tamias sibiricus, captured in Kyunggi and Kangwon province in Korea, 1997, seropositivity for Orientia tsutsugamushi was determined. Serological test for Orientia tsutsugamushi infection was performed using indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique (IFA). Of 243 wild chipmunks, 61 against Gilliam strain and 64 against Karp strain of Orientia tsutsugamushi were IFA positive. Seropositivity against Gilliam strain was shown 33.3% in Kyunggi and 23.5% in Kangwon province, and against Karp strain was shown 33.3% and 25.4%, respectively.

  • This paper describes two algorithms for technology mapping of multiple output functions into interesting and popular FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) that lise look-up table memories. For improvement of technology mapping for FPGA, we use the functional decomposition method for multiple output functions. Two algorithms are proposed. The one is the Roth-Karp algorithm extended for multiple output functions. The other is the novel and efficient algorithm which looks for common decomposition functions through the decomposition procedure. The cost function is used to minimize the number of CLBs and nets and to improve performance of the network. Finally we compare our new algorithm with previous logic design technique. Experimental results show significant reduction in the number of CLBs and nets.

  • Dr. Haruyuki Ogino, a member of the Japan Health Physics Society (JHPS), was awarded the 2021 Bo Lindell Medal by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). To commemorate this, the "Joint JHPS-KARP-ARPS program for young radiation protection (RP) scientists to discuss the future of RP" was organized via a web meeting system. First, Dr. Ogino gave a lecture, and then young researchers selected from each academic society made presentations on the future of RP. After the presentations by the three researchers, a free talk was held-young researcher groups of each country being active is a great opportunity to collaborate and exchange information. It was emphasized that the low awareness of knowledge related to radiation has been common to all of the participating countries. Thus, it is necessary to utilize communication via web technology, as done for this program, effectively. One of the biggest advantages for Asia and Oceania is that we do not have a significant time difference. The round-table discussion was concluded by expressing the hope of active exchange and development of young researchers in the future.
