The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) by anticancer agents in rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) was examined. PMN treated for short term (< or = 4 h) with cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, tamoxifen and doxifluridine, respectively, exhibited an enhanced respiratory burst upon formylmethionylleucy1-phenylalanine (FMLP) stimulation. In the long term (> 4h), the production of ROS was suppressed in a concentration-dependent manner. The production of superoxide anion (${O_2}^-$) from the FMLP-stimulated PMN was enhanced by the treatment (for 1 hr) of cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, tamoxifen and doxifluridine, respectively. While 1 hr-treatment with cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, tamoxifen, and doxifluridine, respectively, suppressed the production of NO from the FMLP-stimulated PMN, while 8 hr-treatment enhanced the production of NO. Neomycin suppressed chemiluminescence in cisplatin-, tamoxifen- and doxifluridine-pretreated PMN, however near suppression of chemiluminescence by ethanol and genistein was observed in PMN pretreated with these agents. Staurosporine and bisindolylmaleimide suppressed chemiluminescence in cisplatin- and doxifluridine- pretreated PMN. Wortmannin has shown a slight suppression in cyclophosphamide-, cisplatin- and tamoxifen-pretreated PMN, but a strong suppression in doxifluridine-pretreated PMN. Methionine strongly suppressed in cyclophosphamide and cisplatin-pretreated PMN. In conclusion, these results indicate that long term treatment of PMN with cisplatin and doxifluridine inhibit respiratory burst through protein kinase C (PKC) translocation, phospholipase C (PLC), D (PLD) and tyrosine phosphorylation kinase (TPK) activation. Tamoxifen inhibits respiratory burst through PLC, PLD, TPK. Cyclophosphamide inhibits respiratory burst through myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity.
The silkworm extract powder contain 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), a potent ${\alpha}$-glycosidase inhibitor, has therapeutic potency against diabetes mellitus. Therefore, natural products containing DNJ from mulberry leaves and silkworm are consumed as health functional food. The present study was performed to evaluate the safety of the silkworm extract powder, a health food which containing the DNJ. The repeated toxicity studies and gentic toxicity studies of the silkworm extract powder were performed to obtain the data for new functional food approval in MFDS. The safety was evaluated by a single-dose oral toxicity study and a 90 day repeated-dose oral toxicity study in Sprague-Dawley rats. The silkworm extract powder was also evaluated for its mutagenic potential in a battery of genetic toxicity test: in vitro bacterial reverse mutation assay, in vitro chromosomal aberration test, and in vivo mouse bone marrow micronucleus assay. The results of the genetic toxicology assays were negative in all of the assays. The approximate lethal dose in single oral dose toxicity study was considered to be higher than 5000 mg/kg in rats. In the 90 day study, the dose levels were wet at 0, 500, 1000, 2000 mg/kg/day, and 10 animals/sex/dose were treated with oral gavage. The parameters that were monitored were clinical signs, body weights, food and water consumptions, ophthalmic examination, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, necropsy findings, organ weights, and histopathological examination. No adverse effects were observed after the 90 day administration of the silkworm extract powder. The No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) of silkworm extract powder in the 90 day study was 2000 mg/kg/day in both sexes, and no target organ was identified.
This study was conducted to examine the antioxidative effect and nitrite scavenging ability of extract from Acanthopanax cortex shoot. The total phenolic compound and flavonoids contents of extract from Acanthopanax corex shoot were $116.33{\pm}6.09mg\;GAE/g$ and $65.07{\pm}4.10mg\;RE/g$, respectively. Antioxidative activities were measured by various in vitro models such as DPPH radical scavenging activity, FRAP, reducing power, ABTS radical scavenging activity, ORAC assay. This results showed that the extract of Acanthopanax cortex shoot was effective in scavenging radicals and protecting oxidation when assessed various in vitro systems. Similarly, the nitrite scavenging ability of extract was increased in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, ORAC value at a concentration of $0.1mg/m{\ell}$ was $103.4{\pm}5.6{\mu}M\;TE/g$. Considering high consumer demand beneficial health effects, Acanthopanax cortex shoot can be utilized to develop functional food health-promoting and natural antioxidant agents.
One of the limitation for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation via organogenesis from cotyledon explants routinely in cucumber is the production of chimeric plants. To overcome the limitation, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system via somatic embryogenesis from hypocotyl explants of cucumber (c.v., Eunsung) on the selection medium with paromomycin as antibiotics was developed. The hypocotyl explants were inoculated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA101 carrying binary vector pPTN290; then were subsequently cultured on the following media: co-cultivation medium for 2 days, selection medium for $5{\times}14$ days, and regeneration medium. The T-DNA of the vector (pPTN290) carried two cassettes, Ubi promoter-gus gene as reporter and 35S promoter-nptll gene conferring resistance to paromomycin as selectable agent. The confirmation of stable transformation and the efficiency of transformation was based on the resistance to paromomycin indicated by the growth of putative transgenic calli on selection medium amended with 100mg/L paromomycin, and GUS gene expression. Forty eight clones (5.2%) with GUS gene expressed of 56 callus clones with resistance to paromomycin were independently obtained from 928 explants inoculated. Of 48 clones, transgenic plants were only regenerated from 5 clones (0.5%) at low frequency. The histochemical GUS assay in the transgenic seeds ($T_1$) also revealed that the gus gene was successfully integrated and segregated into each genome of transgenic cucumber.

This research aims to evaluate the concept of eco-efficient water infrastructure and provides a list of case studies in order to help understand the applicability of eco-efficient water infrastructure to Asia and the Pacific. A set of indicators have been explored to assess eco-efficiency in water infrastructure for the region on a micro and macro scale. The core idea of eco-efficiency, 'more value with less impact (on the environment)', has proven to be applicable in management of water infrastructure. The fundamental elements in eco-efficient water infrastructure should encompass physical infrastructure and non-physical infrastructure, which is more needed particularly in Asian countries. The case studies have demonstrated the applicability of the concept of eco-efficient water infrastructure. The Republic of Korea has provided the case of the eco-friendly approaches to enhance dam management and its innovative solutions how to use water more efficiently through state-of-art technologies. The experiences of Singapore are some of the best evidence to establish eco-efficient water infrastructure, for instance, the NEWater project via application of cutting edge technologies (recycled water) and institutional reform in water tariff systems to conserve water as well as enhance water quality. A list of indicators to assess eco-efficiency in water infrastructure have been discussed, and the research presents a myriad of project cases which are good to represent eco-efficiency in water infrastructure, including multipurpose small dams, customized flood defense systems, eco-efficient ground water use, and eco-efficient desalination plants. The study has presented numerous indicators in five different categories: 1) the status of water availability and infrastructure; 2) production and consumption patterns of freshwater; 3) agricultural products and sources of environmental loads; 4) damages from water-caused natural disaster; and 5) urban water supply and sanitation. There are challenges as well as benefits in such indicators, since the indicators should be applied very carefully in accordance with specific socio-economic, political and policy contexts in different countries in Asia and the Pacific Region. The key to success of establishment of eco-efficient water infrastructure in Asia primarily depends on the extent to which each country is committed to balancing its development of physical as well as non-physical water infrastructure. Particularly, it is imperative for Asian countries to transform its policy focus from physical infrastructure to non-physical infrastructure. Such shift will help lead to implementation of sustainable in Asian countries.

Compositions of essential oils extracted from mint herb such as Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate produced in Jeju were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and headspace-GC-MS (HS-GC-MS). By the GC-MS analysis, 13 compounds were tentatively identified in Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate, respectively. Peperitenone oxide, carvone, and linalool were detected as major compounds in Mentha piperita, in Mentha spicata, in Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate, respectively, based on the ratio of peak intensity in the total ion chromatogram. The greater number of compounds, including volatile alcohols and acetates were identified by HS-GC-MsS than by GC-MS in these all three essential oils. Similar patterns of composition were detected in both Mentha spicata and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate by either one of GC-MS methods. However, in case of Mentha piperita, $\small{L}$-(-)-menthol, which was identified as the major compound by HS-GC-MS was detected in dramatically reduced quantity by GC-MS. Interestingly, we found that both linalyl acetate and linalool were identified as the dominant compounds in the essential oil of Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate.
This work, which was about the synthesis of naphthalimidopropyl acrylate and GMA copolymers and their physical properties, investigated the compositions of the copolymer, the reactivity ratios of the monomer, resonance effect (Q), polar effect (e) and fluorescence of naphthalene. Azobisisobutyronitronitryl (AIBN) as an initiator was employed at $60^{\circ}C$ with dimethylformamide (DMF) of solvent for the copolymerization of NIPA. $r_1$ was found to be higher than $r_2$ from the reactivity ratios of the monomer obtained from Fineman-Ross (F-R), Kelen-$T{\ddot{u}}d{\ddot{o}}s$(K-T) methods. NIPA was found to be more copolymerized than GMA. $r_1{\cdot}r_2$ product was lower than 1, copolymerization was maked random-alternating type. The fluorescence spectrum of these polymers showed a weak monomer fluorescence band at 380 nm and a strong excimer fluorescence band at about 460 nm. Fluorescence life time of NIPA monomer showed fluorescence cover with UV 355 nm at room temperature, and life time showed $5.1449{\times}10^{-7}s$.

This study demonstrates the association between total sleep duration of adolescents, and its effects on their physical and mental health. Chi-square test and the multiple logistic regression model were applied to analyze the data collected in 2018 by the Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey (n = 52,928), conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Our analysis indicates increased suicidal ideation with insufficient total sleep duration as per the recommended amount and grade (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.06-1.29, p-value: 0.00]. Especially, insufficient sleep among adolescent girls significantly increases the risk of suicidal thoughts (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.06-1.41, p-value: 0.01). Sufficient sleep showed reduced risk of suicidal ideation among boys (OR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71-0.96, p-value: 0.02). We propose that to reduce the risk of suicide among teenagers, policy considerations are required to ensure sufficient sleep.

Effects of addition level of sodium chloride (NaCl) on gel properties of surimi-like pork (SLP) were investigated. Porcine semimembranosus muscle was used to manufacture SIP contained 1, 2, 3 and 4% NaCl to measure moisture content, pH, color, gel strength, micro-structure and sensory evaluation. The pH and moisture content of SLP were decreased as increasing of NaCl level. However, the gel strength of SLP was increased with increasing of NaCl level. Values of yellowness and chroma were lower in SLP of 2% and 3% NaCl compared with those of 1% and 4% NaCl. Amorphus protein particles size in micro-structure of SLP was decreased and coagulated as increasing level of NaCl. SLP of 1% NaCl had a structure formed by aggregates of densely packed globular proteins and arranged in clusters, whereas a well-structured matrix with a highly interconnected network of strand was observed in SLP of 4% NaCl. Result suggested that the increasing gel strength with NaCl level might be due to lower moisture content and denser micro-structure of gel.

This experiment was carried out to establish a proper method of indocyanine green(ICG) excretion test for a applicable liver function test in dogs. The half life(T1/2), fractional clearance rate(KICG) and retention rate after injection of ICG with or without administred carbon tetrachloride($CCl_4$) were also invested. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The maximum absorbance of ICG in plasma was at 810nm. 2. Half life and fractional clearance rate when administered 0.25 and 0.50mg of ICG per Kilogram body weight were $6.33{\pm}0.58$ minutes and $0.11{\pm}0.99$/minute in the former, $10.01{\pm}1.0$ minutes and $0.07{\pm}0.007$/minute in the latter, respectively. The ICG removal rate was exponentially linear for the first 15 minutes after injection both, of 0.25 and 0.50mg of ICG. 3. One day following the administration of $0.0042m{\ell}\;CCl_4$ kilogram body weight which injected 0.50mg of ICG, half life was more longer and fractional clearance rate was significantly reduced than that of ICG single injection. 4. Plasma retention rate when 15, 30, 45 minutes after injection dose of 0.25 and 0.50mg ICG per Kilogram body weight, $14.7{\pm}4.8$, $5.1{\pm}3.1$, $2.6{\pm}1.6%$ in the former, $26.9{\pm}1.8$, $11.1{\pm}2.4$, $4.8{\pm}1.3%$ in the latter, respectively. However, after administration of $CCl_4$, plasma retention rate of ICG at a dose of 0.50mg, it was $39.3{\pm}0.9$, $16{\pm}2.9$, $10.7{\pm}0.1%$, respectively. 5. Plasma enzyme(AST, ALT, r-GTP) activities administered with $CCl_4$ were increased, but there was no change which injected any dose of single ICG injection. From these results, ICG excretion test to dog is applicable to evaluation of liver function in both clinical and research.
